Low dose aspirin

So I had a follow up yesterday.  CEA and blood tests.  Asked the doc about post chemo diet and exercise.  Two take aways. Exercise 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week, enough to get your heart rate up.  Second, take low dose aspirin everyday.  Apparently recent studies on both items appear to improve recurrence risk and progression free survival.

Anyone else have input on this?

Andrea

    Exercise

    I exercise.

I've never taken meds of any kind other than Synthroid (and if I could stop that, I would), before or since Chemo and I don't care to start now.

Exercise on the other hand, some days I don't feel like it, but I try to do something energetic.

    Good to hear

Since you're a long term survivor I'm glad to hear that you support it.  I'm totally on board too.

    Thanks,

    Andrea

8 years of baby aspirin and

8 years of baby aspirin and the colon has been clean and clear, now if the liver would just get with the program. I guess we'll see by early Feb. since it will be time for ct scan and labs. I don't feel right if I don't get exercise or some physical labor in most days. Every so often comes a day where I hardly get out of the room or house, but is only occasional. I'd like to get a good elliptical machine just to make sure I get the cardio, cause I never seem to get enough out of a gym membership to make it worth the cost. I hope I get cea readings like yours, .7 would be cause for some kind of celebrating...................................Dave

    Grateful

Thanks Dave.  The CEA results were astonishing and I'm ridiculously happy.  Now just need to do everything to keep it there.  I wish the same for you.

    No medications

    Hi Sue,

Just wondered why you are adamantLy opposed to medication?  It seems there might be some that actually help humans.

    It goes back along time

I guess most of it is because I have an acute gag reflex and taking any kind of pill is torture.

Plus, I just don't like medication, not if I can help it. And, there are always conflicting reports. Aspirin also causes bleeding, and I have a habit of bleeding.

    PIK3CA

You can also test for the PIK3CA mutation.   However we just use low dose, magnesium buffered aspirin (e.g. 1/4 of 325 mg tablet) without the testing.  We use glutamine and/or cabbage to help maintain GI integrity when on good behavior.

Among patients with mutated-PIK3CA colorectal cancers, regular use of aspirin after diagnosis was associated with superior colorectal cancer–specific survival (multivariate hazard ratio for cancer-related death, 0.18     http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1207756

    Thanks

My Foundation One results do show that mutation.  Thanks for the link.  It's aspirin everyday for me now.  Can you explain the addition of glutamin?

    I've read conflicting reports, also.

But according to this article, there are ongoing clinical trials  to study it further.

I'm another who can't take aspirin. Aspirin causes me to have an allergic reaction resulting in  massively swelled lips, eyelids, etc.  Pretty scary and makes me very hesitant to try any OTC drugs, including NSAIDs.  I wonder what the alternative recommendation would be for those of us unable to take aspirin.

    glutamine, cabbage

    Wife

My wife takes low dose aspirin.. But, not for the reason of CRC.  Mostly due to the fact she is on Tomxifen (sp?).  I've read the studies... seems there might be something to it.  Who knows for sure.
