Rectal stump discharge.

The discharge of mucus from the rectal stump is fairly normal, along with the passing of stool from time to time.

And as the piece of unused colon ages, it deteriorates from the lack of nutrition, causing irritation and subsequent generation of mucus to offset the irritation.

My issues with all that got worse over time, and my Gastroenterologist’s disinterest in using a sigmoidoscopy to insure that something else wasn’t going wrong, is now a calamity for me.

My increase in discharge was due to irritation from a tumor, not from lack of colonic nutrition. I may now be facing death much sooner than expected.

So although your spouse may be experiencing a very normal and usual occurrence, if it continues or is excessive, insist on a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy. Don’t take NO for an answer, and go to another physician if necessary. If it “feels” like a problem, get it checked out.

Thanks for the feedback John.  Tim has had 'spits' of discharge for a few months now but lately it is just running out of him more frequently.  At first we were thinking that maybe the tumor is shrinking and is being expelled out.  Will have to bring this up to the onc. next time we have an appt.

You should have a good colorectal surgeon to call upon; oncologists provide chemicals and radiation treatments, and get plenty of $$$$ for advising and selling such. Colorectal surgeons are generally more objective regarding treatment.

That said….If the discharge has gotten that much worse in such a short amount of time, I wouldn’t waste time waiting for a pre-scheduled “appointment”. Either a colorectal surgeon or a Gastroenterologist can schedule an appointment.

Please DO NOT be afraid of getting other opinions from other qualified physicians that are not of the same group or association as your present physicians. The Gastro doc I had trusted for years, has caused me to be in this predicament. Catching a tumor early can mean life or death!

The discharge may be “normal”…. but it may be an indication of something more serious. You won’t know that unless there are tests made.

There is no known “cure” for cancer. It doesn’t matter if it’s chemo, radiation or herbs, the very best we can hope for is more time.. Some modalities are less invasive than others, some have less side effects, but no modality should ever cause you to be complacent. As long as your body allowed a defective cell to remain inside you, you are vulnerable to cancer. You have to be proactive; you have to be ever vigil against what can possible kill you.

Make an appointment And get a test.
