    Oh my word....

    Hey, guys 

    sorry for tHe late update but I have a story to tell.

    Was scheduled for the surgery at around noon Friday. They brought me down right on time. By 1230 I was in lala land. 

    Woke up to the nurse telling another nurse, "laparoscopic gallbladder removal switched to open." I almost threw up where I lay. A few minutes later I asked the nurse what time it was. She told me 7 o'clock. I was in 10x more pain than when I had my Neph. 

    A 60-90 procedure had become an over 3-hour one. 

    The doctor told me that I had one of the worst gallbladders he'd seen in many years. It looked like it had been having problems for many years, even though it only started giving me issues 6 months ago (high only makes me believe in good fortune even more of its role in the discovery of my cancer). 

    The gallbladder had hardened and nearly fused to the liver above it. He had to do quite a bit of work to remove it and he couldn't even get 100% of it out. Unbelievable. 

    If anyone is wondering about the pain difference between a laparoscopic or open procedure.... Good lord. It's so much worse. 

    Good news is I'm home now, I had a good recovery day on Saturday and even though I'm still in a metric ton of pain, this procedure isn't as deep into the body and I can tell once the incision improves I will be ok. Thanks for the well wishes!

    Good luck with your surgery, I am assuming you are at Jefferson hospital in Philadelphia.  I was in Jefferson for IL-2  last May - my only complaint was the hospital food was absolutory horrible! I had no problem eating any of the food from the Philadelphia Reading Terminal or any of the local restaurants. So if your doctors let you I suggest you order take out - often!  - BDS

    Food is borderline inedible. They want ypu to eat... How about making it taste remotely good?

    Wow, you poor thing. That sounds awful. I'm so sorry this routine "short" surgery turned into this lenghty process. Wishing for speedy recovery and don't be afraid to ask for painkillers. No reason to suffer. Feel better!

    Talk about a shock tothe system! Well I'm glad to hear you have weathered the ordeal as best as possible. Good, too, that you expect to eal quick. As suggested above, don't be shy using the pain killers. I was such an idiot after surgery that aid wait til the pain got real bad before taking another pill instead of taking the pain meds on schedule. Yea, don't do that. Pain is not your friend! Wishing you a speedy recovery.

    It sounds like youre well rid of the thing! Take it easy and try not to be so interesting in future

    Glad you are home and feeling

    Glad you are home and feeling better.  Don't know if you can compare the pain of your lap neph to an open neph based on your recent gall bladder surgery.  Sound like your gall bladder surgery was quite an extended ordeal and they had to use a jackhammer and exposives to get your gall bladder out!  All that rummaging around and activity will hurt.  My open neph did not hurt bad at all.  I was in on Thursday and out on Saturday.  Anyway, seems like the worst is behind you.
