    Let me know

what your plan of attack is going to be with your diet. I need to watch mine a little more carefully too. You'd think a liver met would be motivation, but no.

    Lets do it together.

My problem is, I've got all the right answers, I just don't follow them.

I move like a rock these days

Not that many years after cancer I started walking . i built up to around to around fifty miles a week every week for a couple of years. I went from around 133kg down to around 95. At that stage I started to develop neuropathy. Mild at first but it gradually got worse. I devloped acute pancreatitis and lost my gallbladder. I very nearly committed a muder. For all my life I had doctors yelling at me to lose weight ,get heaps of exercise. Then here was the doc who removed my gallbladder asking if I was trying to kill myself. I am at the stage now that I can barely walk a hundred metres. The neuropathy is bad enough but a few years back I had an mri that showed grade two ankylosing spondylitis.   My rheumatologist ordered the mri but when he saw the results he said that that was nothing to do with him , I should find an orthopaedic specialist. Everything I read now suggests the treatment of spondylitis is the primarily the job of the rheumatologist. I took my five year old mri scans to my nephrologist. He was not impressed , even at that stage the lower three veterbrae were fused. He is beginning to understand my pain and why four panadol a day are not helping. He put me on fentanyl patches. The pain was gone but i don't like it when the nightmares don't stop when I wake up. I tried them for fifteen days. I left the last patch on for a week to help me get off them. The pain has come back fivefold.  I am seeing my gp tomorrow to see if we can develop a management plan. My kidneys have gone from losing 7 grams of protein a day to around 2.8 on cyclosporine. It seems to be relatively free of side effects so far which is just as well because it is becoming clear that I may be on it for some time to keep the nephrotic syndrome at manageable levels. I was in hospital last November with parainfluenza. They called the hospital pharmacist in to evaluate my medications . When I left hospital I was on two more..Go figure.   My mindset has changed from fit ,happy and healthy to happy and healthy.. actually I'd settle for happy   arghh perhaps filthy rich.  Love to all Ron.

    A survivor

I bet that somthings that phrase drives you crazy.

It almost sounds as though the Cancer is the least of your troubles. Probably easier to deal with than all that has happened since.

I like to think of you out there, cathcing huge fish; like in you picture. I do so hope that you can get out and do some things that you love.

I know I've read in one of your posts how hard life is for you now. You are a survivor, but it is coming at a huge cost.

You're still a star in our books, Ron.

    Hang in there.

My inspiration has come from two people Britney and Krista.  If you google Britney with a cherry on top you can see her page with a few natural product recipes.  Then I talked to Krista and she encouraged me so I'm keeping a daily food log. Day one I ate so healthy although my son made chocolate chip cookies, my favorite. My solution stop buying the cookie mix.  I'm grocery shopping this week with nothing but my log in mind. Writing it down forces me to be accountable.

    G'day Helen

I saw my GP today. We had a long and involved discussion about ankylosing spondylitis. His oppinion was that already I have three verterbrae fused,My breathinig is compromised by a condition called Bamboo spine (part of the spondylitis) My lung capacity is around 73% and does not improve greatly on a nebuliser. He told me that sadly there was little or no chance of healing the damage already done . I am almost certainly at grade three or beyond. He said that if there were a chance to improve it, it lay with the cyclosporine I am currently on for nephrotic syndrome. He thought for my health and sanity I need to try whatever painkillers are left to a kidney compromised patient. So tonight I started oxycodone.  well they worked for Dr house. I'm starting off with the lowest dose and see how I fare. Hugs to all from Ron the Junkie..

100 days of real food is a great resource for Natural food recipes.  http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/

Patrick Quillin's book gave us a lot of imformation:  http://www.patrickquillin.com/beatingcancerbook.html

Basically our diet change started with Laurie being alergic to Soy.  We started reading labels and thought why are all of these chemicals in our food?  We started to make every thing from scratch.  We now have no boxes or prepared food in our house.  We make everything! Occasionally we can find a baker that makes bread with out chemicals in it.  We eat no fast food, and rarely eat out because of all of the chemicals in seasonings etc....

The last two years we have grown a lot of our own food.  Our garden has become a real blessing.  We know that everything from our garden has zero chemicals, and is heirloom varoeties. (no GMO)

When we started our "Diet" it took us a little longer for prep.  We now teach friends and neighbors what we have learned. W eshow people how to make a quick tasty dinner with no chemiicals, no seasoning salts, etc...  No short cuts.  Just real food.  Once we adjusted to cooking with real food, it takes us no longer to cook dinner then before.  Our food is also a lot better tasting!  We can now taste the chemicals in products.

    Thanks!

Great info Mike.  What's your favorite recipe?

I went to Trader Joes expecting to find a cornucopia of organic products, they didn't even have organic apples.  Some too far gone strawberries, okay grapes and cucumbers.  Everything else was the same as the supermarket only higher priced.  They sold some kind of wash that gets off the wax and chemicals.  So I'm using chemicals to get rid of the chemicals?   I read the back of products and even though they say there are no additives or preservatives, there were quite a few names I didn't recognize so I need to learn what's a chemical and what's okay.  Also although they touted sugar free items, they replaced the sugar with unhealthy sugar substitutes rather than the natural products I was expecting to see.  I was really disappointed.  I'm going to try Whole Foods next.

I've caught on that the only way to get healthy food is to make it from scratch so I'm excited for recipes.  I picked up some organic almond flour and a few other organic baking items.

I still eat meat so I picked up free range chicken.  I had some supermarket chicken left so last night when I used the organic brown sugar and barbeque sauce, I could actually taste the difference in the brown sugar.  I still have to find a solution for bbq sauce but it's a step in the right direction.

The log is great. I went from M&Ms to almond slivers.  I'll admit I miss the M&Ms but it's time to be real and beat this addiction to live.   There has to be a way for all of us to encourage each other, say on a blog so we can keep logs and recipes that we liked.  I'll play around with blogs to see what I can find.  If you're computer savvy, please share your ideas.

    I would love ideas too.

I have used organic produce and dairy for years. People tell me 'Well it didn't help you, did it" but I tell them I still want to eat organic, its how I was brought up, my family being pretty much self-sufficient.

So, let us know when you get a blog, and I'll be in with you.

    G'day everyone

I have lived alone for years. One of the things that i am very conscious of is that with the depression of pain and constant illness it is very easy to get into a very bad place with poor nutrition. I have to do all of my own chores . I know that does not sound a big deal but I can remember my mother nearly dieing from flu depression simply because she could not be bothered to look after herself. It is also very easy to adopt an easy diet of rubbish take aways.  I have overcome the problem by keeping it really simple. I have a Breville advance steamer. All of my meat,be it red, poultry or fish is done in the bottom tray of the steamer next tray up is veggies. Nowdays I eat a lot or greens, mainly the chinese leafy greens, beans ,cabbage ,snow peas, mushrooms, zuchinni, eagplant ,asparagas ect. The results are amazing. My food tastes good and it is easy to digest and it is so simple. Steam rocks.. Ron.

    Steaming meat

I steam all of my vegetables, and some of my fish, but I have never steamed red meat. So, you say it is good? I think I will have to give it a whirl. Do you season it well? Do you sear before you steam? This is all very interesting.

    I have strange tastes

But yes I often do  some cheaper cuts of meat ,like gravy beef.I usually cut pockets in the beef and put in pieces of garlic and onion(I can't bring myself to steam choice cuts of meat like rump or rib fillet. I have a stonedine pan for them) . I must admit I love steamed boiling bacon and chicken. With the chicken I get the thigh fillets and stuff them with herbs and mild chillis or peppers then pin them with tooth picks. Fish, I love to steam whitefish like hoki and when done I sprinkle it with soy and a light smear of butter.  It is a little unusual but once you become accustomed to it the flavours are so clean.. I have always loved aspragus but I have found very few ways of cooking it that retains the flavour. I see all of these recipes on lifestyle shows where they barbacue it ,fry it and do all sorts of things . I try that and it tastes like nothing ,least of all asparagus. When I steam it I get the full delicate flavour that I love. I often buy frozen salmon pieces that have a herb covering. I get all of the flavour and it is almost impossible to overcook the fish. It is always moist. Ron.

    Asparagus, I toss in olive

Asparagus, I toss in olive oil and lemon with a bit of garlic salt and either sauté or bake.  This is also good for fish. Rub it in, along with some Dijon mustard to it too. Just mix and rub. You don't need much.  Then bake.  350 for about 20 minutes or less. Flakey when done.

Pinterest has so many recipes.  Search vegan, organic, or raw.

I take an organic chicken, pierce a lemon about 12 times with a fork, add to cavity, add fresh rodemary, or onion and garlic.  Bake at 350 until juice runs clear. About an hour.

Saute zuchinni, add onions and garlic to taste, add a can of organic stewed tomatoes, or fresh.  Then add a handful of Colby jack cheese. Great veggie.  You don't have to put cheese in.

Saute spinach in onions and garlic, it wilts a lot, add a bit if chicken broth and a chopped up tomatoes, and simmer.  You add asparagus first and sauté and make it with both veggies.

Juice Greens, kale, spinach, celery, cucumber, peppers, beets, ginger, etc. Smoothie berries, banana, Greek yogurt, along with an apple or carrot for sweetness.

Soup. Debone a chicken add to a soup pot filled half way with water, add chopped carrotts, zuchinni, green beans, cabbage cut in half or Brussels sprouts, at the end add a bag of spinach, salt and pepper to taste.   I add the big bones bag in to get the bone marrow benefits, then take it out when soup is done.   Add any veggie you like. I used to put chopped potatoes but no longer do that.  You can add turnips.

Wholefoods has a lot of organic produce.

Traders Joes has a super greens and reds in a container, I add a scoop to smoothies, one or the other. I stopped when I got NED, but here I am 7 years later on chemo again. I need to recogmize that it's a life style change.   Eat organic, juice, no Reid meat, stick to fish, organic chicken, easy on the sugar, white bread, rice, potatoes, and pasta.

My eyes aren't that great right now so hopefully there aren't too many typos. My vision is blurry.

    Great tips! I'll try some of these fooda. As soon as I heard the word NED I went back to my old bad habits. Then Leena passed away and another person has entered hoapice and I recognized that it's time for  lifestyle change. I went to whole foods much better selection. I bought all organic products and made a fruit smoothie for the week plus I am going completely hormone free for all meats. I am growing tomatoes this summer but sadly a lot of the starter plant seeds are soaked in pesticides. No morw complacency and down 5 pounds from last week=}

Ron.

    Steamers

I don't mean to scare you, but be careful if you purchase a plastic steamer. Some of the plastics have a chemical that leeches into the food. My adice would be to purchase a good quality pan steamer. I have two, both by All-Clad. Expensive, yes, worth it, yes. I do have a two tier plastic steamer that I bought before I thought about the plastic thing. It has served me well.

I am stil interested in some kind of online healthy diet motivation thing. We could work something out, I bet.

    Good luck.
