Alkaline Diet Success?

Good morning;

I was curious if anyone has had any success with the alkaline diet? If you haven't heard of this, in a nutshell, the idea behind it is that cancer thrives in a highly acidic body. The alkaline diet supposedly reduces the acid. Things like kale, lemon and lime water, celery, onions, spinach and on and on are supposed to help. Sodas, sugars, breads etc... are high acid foods. I read somewhere that ALL cancer patients have a low PH...if it's true, I'm not sure? I also read that in test tubes, that cancer cells do indeed thrive in the acidic enviornment...but I'm the type of person that wants LOTS of scientific proof...so I'm going to do some research. I don't want anyone to not do chemo or something after reading this. I just feel empowered, like I'm doing everything I can to fight my cancer by taking control of what I put in my body. So....any successes with the alkaline diet? Any adivce? I started drinking distilled lemon water everyday and juicing.

    Alkaline

To be blunt, IMHO alkaline diet/water is not worth your time to look into, from what I've heard and read.  The body controls ph of blood well, in a very narrow range; to bring it outside that range I understand may be toxic to the body if you could even do it.  Making your urine more alkaline isn't going to help your health.

Certainly can't blame you for looking into it though.  P.S.  If you're interested in complementary therapies, I found the following link helpful in my research:

Yeah, I read the same thing

Yeah, I read the same thing about the alkaline diet..that it can be deadly if you mess with your body's PH to a great degree and it regulates itself without us getting all Dr. Frakenstein on it, but I was curious if anyone has felt better doing it, or eaten an alkaline rich diet and not had a recurrence...one can hope LOL

I appreciate the link...thank you...always reading, reading, reading

I'm sure that he has been on this and it hasn't helped him.  I'd be careful to trust things like this as cures can be good for some and not for another.  My doctors that come highly recommended told me I've not done anything to cause me cancer by eating or drinking what I've done and they believe it is just a terrible chance that came in life.  I've quit striving for the ultimate answer as even with global warming no one can agree so why should we think we can change it by eliminating one thing in our diet - I just can't buy it.  Too many other people eat so worse than me on such a high scale when I've ate right all these years, that I'm thinking for me it's just someone that want's to sell a book or an idea.  Sorry, but this is how I've felt from the start of my journey because of what my doctors told me.

    Thank you all

I sincerely appreciate ALL opinions! I want to hear from anyone and everyone, that's the only way to make an educated decision about what to do.

I did a little research today and read that our stomachs are normally at a ph of 3.5 which is acidic to digest foods, while our body keeps our blood around a 7 which is neutral ph. According to medical journals, what you eat does not change your ph balance because your body would just regulate it. Your pee changes ph levels depending on what you eat, if you've eaten etc...I've decided to do an alkaline rich diet for the reason that it consists of healthy foods and cuts out the refined things.

While it may not be the answer, studies are in early stages and have confirmed nothing that I can find..I may have missed one... it certainly can't hurt to eat a healthy diet. My cancer is hereditary non polopysis colon cancer...and I don't think what I ate in my life or did caused it, but I do wonder if some people who are predisposed to developing cancer don't have it set off, so to speak, by pesticides or stress, pollutants...idk..Im not a scientist...but I can't help but wonder about these things. If nothing else, eating healthy makes me feel good about myself...I'm still doing surgery for my lung tumor...Im not ready to rely on food to cure me...but I can't help but hope that it will help.

    Maybe it's not so straightforward

"oral administration of sodium bicarbonate was sufficient to increase peritumoral pH and inhibit

tumor growth and local invasion in a preclinical model, supporting the acid-mediated invasion hypothesis"

    How much...

...sodium bicarbonate are you supposed to take? By the way that article was very convincing about the role of Ph.

    Frustrated: Everyone Has "The Cure"

I read that messing with your ph too much can be deadly...so im not sure, some people swear that the sodium bicarbonate is a "cure" for cancer...and the argument is that it's totally safe because people eat donuts and cake etc... Treatment and eating some pastrys is totally different. There's an itallian doctor who actually injects it into tumors if I am understanding it correctly, but he had manslaughter charges brought against him when people died. Im not about to mess with my ph at home. Plants who have a low or high ph die...so each to their own...but it sounds dangerous to me. People all over the internet say to try it if you have cancer...but I don't think those people have actually had cancer, realize the additional medical problems we have, or even understand basic physiology from the comments I read...its one thing to tell someone else to do it and another to put your own life on the line...sigh....everyone has the cure!! The other day a man told me to just drink distilled water, another person told me something about iodine. Wow...if all I had to do was drink distilled water...you would think someone would have stumbled across that by now...hmmm? I know people are trying to help, but it's frustrating trying to explain how complex and agressive cancer can be...Ive decided to eat very healthy, juice, and just be as stress free as possible. Has anyone or anyone you know actually had success without surgery, chemo, or radiation? I've never met anyone that has myself...

    It is fairly

convincing, and for any cancer accept brain/CNS I think why not? (if all options have failed) Oxford university did a mathamatical model on this (seperate paper) and came up with 12g day, which is pretty dangerous.

Interesting idea on how the acid destroys normal cells to make way for growth, not the only paper mentioning this.

    Here is my Natriopathic

Here is my Natriopathic oncologists take on sugar and cancer. To me it makes sense.

    Does Sugar Feed Cancer?

Posted on Mar 25, 2013 in Introduction to Integrative Oncology

    By Katherine Neubauer, ND, FABNO

While dietary sugar does not necessarily feed cancer, blood sugar feeds cancer.

    Let’s explore 2 meals.

In the first meal, you have a salmon filet, steamed broccoli, and a 3 pieces of dark chocolate for dessert. The protein and fiber balance the sugar, and blood sugar stays level.

In the second meal, you have a bowl of cereal and a glass of orange juice. The starch and sugar quickly spikes blood sugar. The pancreas responds by releasing insulin, the hormone of calorie storage and tissue growth. Insulin raises insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1).

    Growth factors feed cancer.

Insulin and IGF-1 are growth factors. This growth is helpful in a fetus, a growing child, or for tissue repair after an injury. For most adults, we don’t get taller or develop new organs. So, the only things that grow in response to insulin are our fat cells and our tumors.

Insulin dysregulation has been clearly associated with cancer development, recurrence, and death. Therapies that regulate insulin, such as a low-glycemic diet orMetformin, prevent cancer recurrence and extend survival.

    But doesn’t cancer metabolize sugar?

All tissues metabolize sugar. Tumors do, but so does the brain and heart. Cutting off a tumor’s supply of sugar won’t work. The tumor can trick the body into breaking down muscle, fat, and even organs to provide sugar. This is called cachexia.

So, the key is to cut off the tumor’s supply of growth signals instead. Insulin and IGF-1 are growth signals. So are the products of chronic inflammation. Eating a whole foods diet decreases growth signals and inflammation, which then puts the brakes on tumor metabolism.

But isn’t sugar acidic? I thought acid feeds cancer?

Cancer makes acid as part of its anaerobic metabolism. Acid is a byproduct of tumor growth, but it does not cause tumor growth.

Tumors grow faster than the blood vessels that serve them. So, a tumor runs out of oxygen and switches to anaerobic metabolism. This type of metabolism produces acid.

Have you ever had a tough workout, and felt your muscles burn the next day? This “burn” is from lactic acid. Your muscles produced this when they worked too hard and ran out of oxygen. The muscles did some anaerobic metabolism, which is what tumor cells do every day. Just as avoiding sugar before a workout won’t get rid of the “burn” in your muscles, it won’t work to inhibit anaerobic metabolism in tumor cells either.

The acid is the result of the tumor’s growth, not the cause. To regulate tumor growth, we have to block it’s growth factors. These include insulin, inflammation, nutrient deficiency, and reactivation of the “self-destruct button.

    Action plan

So, I recommend that you eat a whole foods diet that keeps blood sugar level and inflammation low. There are “good sweets” that you can have as part of a low-glycemic meal. These include whole fruit, dark chocolate, stevia, and xylitol. If you’re going to have a sweet, keep portion size small and pair it with some protein. This will keep you well nourished and keep inflammation and insulin in balance.

    Acid vs Alkali Diet

A better description of the Acid vs Alkali Diet is, Potasium versus Salt.

The "High" acid foods are high in Potasium, and the foods listed to stay away from are high in salt.  It really is a misreresented diet.  Like many have said is our bodies balance the acid via our organs.  Acid vs Alkali is an uneducated way of saying to balance our salts. Salt is needed for temperature control, and potasium is needed for nerve and brain functions.  (Overly simplified- do not beat me up to much. lol.)

I didn't try an alkaline diet

I didn't try an alkaline diet but the citrus fruits can be killer during treatment (all men please stop reading here).   Separately, I was drinking lemonade for about a month recently (I was just on a lemonade kick, not cancer related) and found out the hard way that it causes vaginal irritation over time. . . If you're a man and you're still reading this, I told you so! . . oh and my cuckie neighbor told me about broccoli sprouts (which turned out to be valid when I looked them up) and even if they didn't have any effect on the cancer, mentally they had a really big impact.  I felt empowered eating them.  My cuckie neighbor told me the trick is in the chewing and wouldn't you know, I destressed when I chewed them (I could win an emmy for best cow immitation).  I ate them with peanut butter on whole grain bread and washed it down with almond milk.  There's no real answer, you should try things and see if they work for you even if it's just a mental boost or feeling empowered.  Anything that improves diet is a good thing in general.  Cutting out though, I'd go to a nutritionist.  You don't want to end up depriving your body of nutrients.
