Some fun info

Since there hasn't been much going on, I thought I would share something fun.  Some of you may have watched the Kentucky Derby or heard about the winner "California Chrome"  It's a real Cinderella story, and the neat thing is that two couples own CC and one of the couples live in our town of Yuba City.  They are the quieter couple who are not interviewed as much, his name is Perry Martin.  Anyway, if you haven't heard the story, you can google California Chrome.  He will be racing in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes.  He is quite the horse, and we all excited in little YC. Cool.

    Becky,

I have been a California Chrome fan for some time (well, two or three minutes now).  Although I had a pony as a kid, I never much watched the Triple Crown, but will watch the remaining two races this year.  Driving across central Kentucky is so beautiful, all the huge horse farms.

    Hi Becky

Not been a huge horse race fan but I did work for a company in Houston that owned part of the race track there so I got to do some work there.  Also a friend in Houston from Kentucky used to have Kentucky Derby parties and that was always fun.  It was the first time I ever had a mint julep (well more than one).  They are very refreshing in hot weather but will really sneak up on you ;).  Go CC!

    Celebrity

    Hi Becky,

I know what you mean about small town celebrity. We are having weekly newspaper headlines and our little city is all a titter because one of our local boys has moved into the top 4 on American Idol. Not that I am comparing our rocker to a horse. And of course, there is not as much $$ involved.

    Cheers!

Is it Caleb?  Bill and I get a kick out of him, his McCartney and Creedence songs were incredible last nite.  Finally some songs of our time.  Being 60's hippies, we can appreciate his music Wink. I'll bet horse country Kentucky is like being in a different world.  The Preakness is on the 17th.

    "Lowcountry"

    Becky,

Yea, occasionally a contestant will move to the fore who focuses on the great classics, rather than the raunchy, meaningless drivel that predominates contemporary music (not all, but I would say most).

You know that I grew up in the "Lowcounty" of Charleston, although now I live less than an hour from Caleb's Asheville.  Most of the Asheville TV stations are actually based in my Upstate region of SC (the towers are all on Hogback Mountain, near Tryon, NC, if you want to get technical), and Caleb is the local hero here for certain.  The Fox affiliate features something about him every night.

Although the NC boys in the Navy called me a "flat-lander," Charleston is better known for swamps and alligators -- sort of  bayou.

You mentioned my favorite, CCR. The video quality is marginal, but musically it is as good as true live can get, and it definitely takes you back to the day.

Fogerty is rated by Rolling Stone one the Top 100 Guitarists of all Time.

Check out the bass player's purple, silk shirt.  I used to wear those a lot, had a monster moustach, the John Lennon glasses that were so heavily tinted that they appeared black.    I drove through The Citadel once in those days, and was not sure I would get out alive.  I did not encounter a smiling face !    The 60s Rule !

    Memories

Loved the video, they were the best.  We actually saw them in concert in the 70's.  I remember being in college in Oakland in the late 60's.  We used to walk along Telegraph Ave in Berkely with all the cafes and poster shops and other shops Embarassed.  I had a Doors "Light My Fire"  poster in my dorm room.  Saw the original Supremes in '67.  We used to go to a place in Berkely called the Brass Monkey with live bands and dancing, strobe lights etc.  I often wonder who the bands were that we danced to.  Also saw Janis twice in the late 60's.  The first time she introduced her new band "Big Brother and the Holding Co,"  The first act was a new band called "Chicago Transit Authority.  No wonder I never finished college!  I can just picture you driving through the Citadel, wow that was gutsy.  You must have really had to duck the rednecks in your day.  At least we in CA pretty much started the big change.  Don't know if that was good or bad.  Sorry for TMI, I am just in memory lock for some reason.  Oh yeah after all that I finally met Bill Laughing.

    But then...

    Becky,

Dang ! You did everything but follow the Grateful Dead in a microbus ! I bet you still have pink, tinted Janis glasses in a chest somewhere ?

Lest it seem I was dissing on The Citidal, I guess I should add that a year after that visit, I was in the Navy, riding submarines. I later returned to the Citadel for graduate school in Germanic History, in their evening program (which uses the same classrooms and professors as the day school, but which is unrelated to the Corps of Cadets).  The instruction was excellent, and I made a lot of friends there.

Winston Churchill wisely noted: "Anyone not a liberal at 20 has no heart; anyone not a conservative at 40 has no brain."

    Did you hear us yelling?

We were gone most of the day yesterday but I recorded it.  We didn't dare listen to the news or anything.  Wow, we were so excited.  We will be in Mexico for the Belmont but have American TV in our condo.  The owner that lives here is so low key, he didn't even go to the race!  Did you really bet $2.43 Max?  That's hilarious.  Now if Caleb wins Idol next week, Roquie and we will be stars Laughing.
