hoping for a fix

Hey y'all!  I've been so busy lately...what with seeing Cher in Cleveland, and all.  Yep, Cher.  She was AMAZING!  I saw Bruce Springsteen two weeks before Cher and Billy Joel two weeks before "The Boss".  I'm hoping to be down and out for the next 2-3 months...literally speaking, so I'm doing all I can, while I can.

Tomorrow is a big day for me.  I have an 11 o'clock appointment with a general surgeon to see about having my bulge fixed.  I call it a hernia, the ct calls it a dehiscence but, whatever it is, I want it G.O.N.E.!  It is huge (6.7cm) and very uncomfortable.  Sometimes, it just down right hurts...especially when I sneeze or cough.  When my tummy gets bloated, as us women tend to do, I am miserable beyond words.  But, more than anything, it just looks wrong in so many ways!  I feel like I'm a walking freak show.  You don't see many pregnant 50 year old's and, tho I'm not pregnant, I sure look it.  It's just a matter of time before someone asks when I'm due.

The bulge is an unfortunate result of my nephrectomy.  Being highly prone to hernias, I took extra care not to do any heavy lifting during my recovery, but, clearly I wasn't careful enough.

My last hernia repair was about 4 years ago.  It was my 6th or 7th hernia surgery (I've lost count) and at that time, the doctor said I could not have any more repairs.  I have so much mesh and thick ropey scar tissue, making surgery too risky.  Surely she'll change her mind when she lays eyes and hands upon my unsightly bulge.

As some of you know, I've been working out of state for the past couple years.  Many of my co-workers (about 170 of us went to Ohio) have asked to come home and have been told that nobody comes home (with a job) unless they are pregnant or dying.  I am, by nature, a quiet and private person so, not alot of people knew I had kidney cancer.  But, wanting desperately to come home to my husband and grandbaby, I played the cancer card.  I'm not proud of it and I'm sure it pissed plenty others off, but truth be known, I was neglecting my follow-up care by not being at home near my doctors.  I have yet to see my oncologist following my last ct scan back in March, which means I still haven't discussed with him, the growth in the lung node; and, I'm over due for an appt with urologist...all because I was working in Ohio.  Suffice it to say, as of this past weekend, I am once again a resident of the great state of Oklahoma!!  I called and hubby came running...said he would have carried me home on his back if he had to.  And the best part, I still have a job!

Did I mention it's already 100 degrees here?  What was I thinking, leaving 60 degree temps behind??

Wish me luck!  I am praying I am not beyond repair.

    Things happen for a reason

and yours is a really good one.  Playing the cancer card can not be anything to be ashamed about... you have your family back together, and kept your job... You are where you should be to take care of the RCC thing.. my best wishes for your move back home.

Hey Twinnie, i am so happy

    Hey Twinnie,

i am so happy to hear you have been able to return home to that lovely husband and family of yours. It must have been so tough on you being separated for such long periods. I don't blame you for playing the cancer card, I would have played the whole pack. Makes a change gaining something positive from having this wretched disease, I mean why not, you deserve it. I loved the part of your tale about your husband who came running, intent of whisking you home on his back if necessary, it put me in mind of An Officer and a Gentleman, lol! I love that film!

I bet it's great being back in that warm sun, that's what I miss most about Texas. It was novel being able to enjoy a barbacue without holding an umbrella in one hand and a plate in the other, whilst looking longingly at your food. We moved back here in the winter, it took about a year for our blood to thicken against the cold.

It will be a relief for you to be able to be monitored properly, we all need that luxury. I will be thinking of you tomorrow Twinnie, I am sure you have a long way to go before you would be deemed beyond repair. I have to have a similar op on mine later this year, mine is about the size of a duck egg. I am sticking to spanx at the moment, which has its benefits. People keep asking if I'm working out, I can only proffer a fib if my husband is not around. He always tells them straight, that I have recently discovered the benefits of spanx, he's such a loud mouth.

Let us know how it goes:)

    Hey y'all!
    I saw doctor

    Hey y'all!

I saw doctor this morning.  She is going to fix me!  I can't tell you how happy I am!  The thought of having surgery again makes me want to vomit, seriously!  But, I was more afraid of the, very likely possibility, she'd tell me nothing could be done.  She not only said she could fix me but that she had to fix me.  She said 6.7cm is quite large and would continue getting bigger.

She told me the incision will be large, as would be the mesh, and that she'd have to tighten me down tighter than norm, given my long history of hernias.  She said my nephrectomy will seem like a walk in the park, compared to what's in store for me post operatively.  She does not mince words.  I thought this whole time that my neph was laprascopic, yet I knew the incision was bigger than any laprascopic incision I'd had in the past.  But, since that's what the urologist called it, I just went with it.  Today, my surgeon looked at my scar and called it a lap assit incision, explaining it's technically an open procedure with a smaller incision.  She asked if I had any idea why he chose, where he chose to make my incision.  I do not.  I assumed everyone's is like mine.  She has three patients scheduled for the exact same repair she's making on me, but none of their incisions are where mine is.  I'd be lying if I said I was at all surprised.  What's the saying, 'if it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all'.  Seems to be how I roll.  Anyway, Dr wants to do my surgery next week but I am scheduled to keep my grandson the week of the 19th while his mama is in Cancun, for her sister's wedding.  So, surgery will have to wait till June 5th. Not how I wanted to bring in my 50th birthday, but God willing, I'll still see that day.

Thanks Ron, Fox, Pam and DS, for your kind words of support!  And yes, DS, I am one determined little lady...well, maybe not little but certainly determined, once I set my mind to something.

Karen, my bulge began to show almost immediately after my neph.  I asked my urologist about it at my 6 wk post op, it was pretty small at that time.  He told me it's a phenomenon that happens to some people and that there wasn't really anything that could be done for it.  Hopefully, you will just learn of it thru me and never have first hand experience.

Djinnie, I also love, An Officer and a Gentleman, great movie!  Always makes me cry...haven't seen it in years, tho.  My hubby is pretty special and I am one lucky girl.

The temps here are too hot to enjoy, but I'd still rather be too hot than too cold.  I don't know how you do it.  Three winters in Ohio damn near killed me.  brrrrr!  As for spanx, I have them.  I have long ones for when I need to suck in the thighs, high waisted ones for when I need a quick tummy tuck and a slip style, in two lengths, one of which is high waisted, for wearing under skirts and dresses.  They eliminate the need for panties too, meaning no panty lines.  The problem is, it's just too hot to wear anything more than absolutely necessary.

Hopefully, wearing spanx will keep your duck egg from becoming an ostich egg!  Having that cough under control will help too.

Have a happy Mother's Day, Djinnie, and all the other moms out there.

    Hey, tummy tuck

You know that the doctor told you the surgery would be tough so that when it was over there would be no surprises. Just in case. You'll feel like your in a bear hug for a while but my money is on the fact that you'll have no problemos. All the fun we get to share. I'll celebrate with a beer. If my liver transplant can handle it!

    Glad You're Back Home

But can you do something about the temperature before I get there? I'm coming in for a week Saturday to visit my mom in Tulsa and will be parading around the state to visit other relatives next week. 100 is too damn hot!

Best to you on the hernia repair. I've had one, and it weren't fun.

Where's your scar anyways? Now you got me so curious. Mine is parallel to the ground, on my right side and about 6-7" long (and I was supposed to be a lap too, and I guess that's why I have the 4 other little ones...)

Two of my friends had there's from sternum to belly button perpindicular to the ground, but they both had open surgeries.

    Thanks for updating us.

    tummy tuck...i wish!

I'm sure you're right fox, tho I hadn't really thought about it.  I just thought she was being a bit dramatic, but I suppose she really want's me to know so I'm not freaking out when it's worse than I expected.  Pretty smart doc!  If I were having a tummy tuck, it'd be well worth the pain, but a hernia repair...not so much.

Hi Todd, bring your skivies, it's too hot for clothes!  Actually, Friday is only going to be 79 degrees, but come Saturday, it's gonna be near triple digits again.  My hubby is riding in a 5 state poker run, leaving early Friday morning.  I worry about him on that bike in such hot temps.

As for my incision, it starts about 2 inches directly above my navel, curves around the navel and proceeds about 3 or 4 inches directly below the navel.  With a little imagination, it kinda looks like an upside down question mark.  Again, I thought everybody's looked like mine.  Learn something new everyday!

Enjoy your visit with your mama and family.  One of your visits, we'll have to do lunch.

    Hi Twin!

I'm happy for you that you are able to get the hernia repaired.  I love how you chose a later date due to being with grandchildren!  I certainly can appreciate that choice.

I think it would be a great idea if you started a thread regarding incisions.  Now I am curious about what other people had done.  My husbands is an arc on the front of him, from hip bone to below sternum to the other hip.  It was a huge incision!  Due to his back surgery and all the rods, plates and screws they had to go in through an anterior approach.  (maybe due to having the tumor in the vena cava too).

The other thing that noone else has mentioned is a brace that was just like an acewrap, but very wide.  It had a velcro closure.  I hope I have described it adequately.  It was very helpful in regard to movement and coughing, etc..  Do you think that would help you not to get a repeat hernia?  If you wore something like that post-op.  They also sent him home with these lidocaine pads that we cut up and put along the incision line.  That was a great idea too.  He did so well, and was home in 6 days.  Just some thoughts I had after reading your post.  (I'm commenting on my husbands nephrectomy, not a hernia repair).

Oh yes..  I have a "Kidney

Oh yes..  I have a "Kidney Belt".. which is also called a support belt.. got it from Home Depot for like $10.00.  Good idea to get one and once the pain goes away, wear it if you need to lift anything or do anything strenuous...

    Seriously, Ron?  A Kidney

Seriously, Ron?  A Kidney belt from Home Depot??  That's the funniest thing ever!  I keep picturing Tim the Tool man with his little tool belt on.  Hubby is a carpenter, perhaps I could just wear one of his.  Or even my chaps.  They fit me like a tool belt, around my waist.  Can't you just imagine it now??

Annie, I'd say that's some incision your hubby had!  Wowser!  And yes, I  too have a support wrap.  I got it after my last hernia repair, to wear during recovery.  It does look like an ace bandage only 10 times the width, and fastens with velcro.  It's not easy to get it on by myself, hubby has to help.  So, when I'm home alone, I struggle with it.  I am very short-waisted and it's much wider than the length of my torso.  It hadn't occurred to me till just this minute that, I could probably cut it...it's just a piece of fabric.  I was much too swollen after my neph to wear it, nor could I have stood the pressure.  Maybe I'll run to Home Depot and see what Ron is talking about.  I suppose I can walk around the house looing like I'm part of the Village People Wink

Twinnie, I just wanted to wish you Happy Mothers Day too. France celebrated some weeks ago, but my daughter has flown over from New York for a weeks visit and brought me a Mother's Day gift, because of her I tend to celebrate US time. She brought me an IPad which is great because my other one has been teetering on it's last legs for a while now. A little like me, lol!

i was given a Velcro belt on prescription for my bulge, but mine is on the waistline so the situation of the belt was uncomfortable when bending, hence spanx.

    Oh my Twinnie.. You tease..

Oh my Twinnie.. You tease.. The support belt has suspenders to help lift. No separation needed. Lol.. Lots of elastic so you can adjust as needed. I bet some of our non US people can tell you what suspenders are... Ron

    Suspenders by any other name!

Hey Ronnie, what you in the US call suspenders we in the UK call braces. What we call suspenders you call garters etc. and the list goes on. I prefer the female suspenders myself, with the ribbons and bows, sexy, sexy! Lol!

    Great news x 2

    Good Morning, Twinnie!

Congratulations on your good newses...moving home and hernia repair!!

Speaking of incisions...my husband has an upside down V (I think the surgeon called it a chevron?)  It starts just above his hipbone, goes up to his navel, then down to the other hipbone.

A chevron from hip to hip?

A chevron from hip to hip?  My goodness, that was a big incision!!  He sould be quite fashionable in his birthday suit...chevron pattern is the "in" thing these days, in the fashion world.

Hope all is well with him now!

    Support belt!

    Double dippin on Mother's

Double dippin on Mother's Day...I dig that!  And so awesome your daughter is spending the week with you!  Adult children make the best of friends!

I'll be alone this Mother's Day weekend.  Makes me sad to think about it but, it can't be helped.  Oh well, I have lots of unpacking and stuff to do around the house to keep my mind off being alone.

As for a support belt with suspenders, I still have no idea what Ron is talking about.  I think he's pulling my chain!  I did go to CVS this afternoon and found an abdominal binder with a short torso.  It shoud do the trick.

Enjoy your time with that babygirl.  What a blessing!
