a change in scan schedule

in Kidney Cancer #1

Having mixed emotions.  I met with oncologist yesterday to discuss the results of my early January CT's.  Initially doc said he wanted me scanned every 6 months.  Yesterday, he changed it to every 3 months.  According to him, the enlarged lymph node in my lungs is not too worrisome and the 1.5 cm spenule, aka accessory spleen, although not terribly common, is also not too worrisome.  So...why increase the intervals of my scans?  Don't get me wrong...I'm down with every 3 months.  In fact, I'm thrilled to be followed more closely.  But doc is sending mixed messages and it's making me think he's more concerned than he's letting on.  He told me not to worry until he tells me to.  Yeah right!

BUT...Tomorrow I set sail with Royal Caribbean for a glorious week at sea, with ports in Hait and Jamaica.  So, I'm going to do my best to put it out of my mind and not give a minute of my much needed vacation to worry. 

I'm going to enjoy little umbrella drinks, beer, wine and maybe a dirty banana or two.

    I was supposed to be on a Cruise last weell but on the Celebrity Silohette. You should be just about ready for a parasail ride.

    It sounds like your Oncologist is just taking good care of you, don't look for trouble where there is none! Have a great trip and forget all about it!

    I'm a bit jealous

    So I am going to walk around the house in my speedo, stand by the glass front door,(to get a tan) and drink beer with a little snow shovel in it. Have a GREAT time Twinny!

    There is nothing wrong with being cautious.

    did you call the oncologist after reading your path report? If so, then the doctor is being responsive and thorough.

    Another thing that I value is a professional who is flexible and willing to review and change rather than rigidly maintaining an original position.

    Enjoy your cruise as much as possible; you work hard and you have been through a lot. A vacation will be good for you. Our trip to Hawaii brought my husband a lot of energy when we returned.

    Bring some sun back.

    I wouldn't stand too close to that glass door in my speedo...

    I would have been concerned

    I would have been concerned if he had kept it at 6 months' intervals.  Mine has been 3 months since the git-go.  Have a blast on that cruise.  I wish I was going with you!

    I know that is a tall order, but it won't change the outcome and it is a waste of energy. Instead feel relaxed and happy that you are finally getting the care you deserve!

    Enjoy your cruise - sunshine, drinks, and beautiful ocean. Save your energy for ordering your drinks!!

    You should definitely ask him to be specific as to why he changes the schedule imho. Even if its just because he wants to be on the safe side and rather scan one time too many, you have a right to know why he reaches that conclusion. I wouldnt be alarmed at all based on what you write, but maybe getting a specific explanation of his rationale behind the decision could put your mind a bit at ease?

    Not sure but maybe your Oncologist is playing it safe,maybe he is 98 percent sure it is nothing too worry about but just in case it is better to find out sooner than later.I think you are lucky to have an Onc who seems to care.Try not too read between the lines  you will only make yourself worry,enjoy your vacation and take some pics please and post them for us.

    I cringe when folks do not

    I cringe when folks do not get the first scan at 90 days.  That gives a good baseline for the future.  Plus it gives such peace of mind that there was nothing hiding when they were inside checking you out... heh..    Plus they can make sure they did not leave anything behind.. no instruments, no gloves... Sealed
