Leather Goods/ Vinyl / Textiles (Bikers?) Carcinogenics

Hi,

I was doing some internet reseach and read that certain chemicals used in the manufacturing of Leather Goods and Textiles can be carcinogenic and can be associated with Kidney Cancer. I also noticed that a few of the members here might be bikers as in motorcycle riders. My Father both have been diagnosed with Kidney Cancer. He is a biker, and has been for years. He is 70 years old and still riding. We both worked together in the Leather Goods manufacturing business.  Now I sell vinyl handbags.  Several of my customers require lab lesting for lead, cadmium, and Phatalates.

I know that many of the bags I sell and work with contain these carcinogenic componets.  I was wondering does anyone else here work in simillar industries.  Can biking be dangerous inhaling exhaust of vehicles in front of you or something?

Any thoughts?????

    biker risks

I haven't heard that one Commutermom. One might have to think that since almost everyone wears shoes, our cancer may have evolved from our feet. And if fumes are a culprit, then truck drivers would be more prone to it also. We have had fun in the past blaming the risk on too much time on a golf course since several of us were golfers. We also determined that living in Michigan was a huge risk factor as many were living there. A single snapshot can produce apparent links to coincidental findings. I have kidney cancer. I don't want to find out that I have Harleydosis or Davidsonoma. Although like most Harley riders, I think that if you ride a Suzuki or Yamaha there must be something wrong with you. LOL!

    Denim Plants

I worked in a Denim plant for about two years. Possible link, but there is just so much out there now that is synthetic, processed, and filled with steroids. From the food we eat, to he cars we drive, the exhaust we breathe, and the plastic bottles we drink our water from.

i don't plan on living in a remote location, so yes, I try to avoid exposures, but you would go insane trying to avoid everything.

I perform that song in the tuning that Richard Thompson uses, CGDGBE.  In addition to being a cancer survivor, I am a guitar nut.

thought the same thing as you

I have had the same thoughts as you.  There are quite a few guys on here who have automotive/biker hobbies.  My research on causation said automotive industry (diesel and solvents), agriculture and horticultural workers (including vets exposed to Agent Orange), and exposure to cadmium (which my husband says that can happen when you weld something).  My husband who has no relatives with kidney cancer fits all three of these areas.  So we think that's how it happened.  In the beginning it mattered to us.  We wanted to know how can this happen.  He is a nonsmoker afterall.  But, after the initial shock of having been told you have cancer, I guess it really doesn't matter much for the treatment plan how it happened.  We do think it is sad that nobody is asking for this information.  We have not completed any kind of profile regarding exposure.

    Survey or absence there of!

I wondered the same thing oaklee.  Why no one has take a detailed survey of my exposures/risk factors.  I was a tobacco user, smokeless for 30 years,  increased risk of mouth cancer but I wasnt expecting kidney cancer.  32 years of piloting various aircraft also exposed me to various industrial fuels, oils, cleaners etc.... But no comprehensive survey by any medical authority.  I can only surmise that a great many things could flip the "switch" and cause good cells to go bad.

    Enviornmental

I have always wondered about this and there is little out there except identifying tobacco as an RCC risl.

I have never smoked, but have been exposed to second hand smoke over the years which is finally regulated. When I grew up I was in the City (Detroit), but have been in the burbs for the last 50 years where the air is a bit cleaner. My neighbor Faye who has lved acrooss the street the last 43 years has RCC. Her surgery was about 19 years ago and she is a young 83. Nobody in the family has RCC. My mother had Colon Cancer about 40 yeas ago and is a young 92.

It is about time someone took the time to do an envornmental  interview of a large sampling of RCC survivors to try and get some answers.
