incision area tenderness

Six weeks ago today (7/31), I underwent a Laproscopic radical left nephrectomy.  A DiVinci robot was used.  6CM tumor.  Stage III.  I currently am receiving no chemo nor radiation.  I am very fortunate that we caught it when we did.

The incision is at about the belt area.  I am still tender there.  After driving for a couple of hours, or sitting up in a chair, I get some soreness.  is this normal?  At what point can a patient realistically expect to be free of soreness and tenderness?

Hi Izzy, it can take a few

Hi Izzy, it can take a few months more.  My mom took about six months to not feel so sore and tender.  Also her scar was not healing quickly enough so they told her to put vitamin E on the scar each day until it healed completely. This helped to speed the healing a bit.  Hope you feel better soon!

    Part of the initiation

    Izzy,

Soreness  and a buldge can last up to a year. Try and wear sweat pamts with no belt. Also have the doctor look at it to make sure there is no infection. Hope this helps.

    thank you.

I guess it is an initiation to our club that no one joins willingly.  44 in waist pants are loose on me, while 42s are snug.  I guess I'll stay with the 44s for now.  thank you for your input.

    Hi Izzy

My surgey was 23rd July and I am still a bit uncomfortable. Not tender though. All healed apart from a slight iratation in the small hole that the drain was in but nothing dreadfull. I am still swollen to the left side and although I can get loose jeans on it is not comfortable so I wear leggings and also smock style tops. I get achy when i drive and sit in the same position for to long.

    Hope that helps Izzy x x x

    pain, pain, go away

This is major surgery. Everyone wants the recovery to be instant so they can forget what just happened. But it takes longer than that. The cutting of the superficial cutaneous nerve endings result in numbness and discomfort for quite a while. Sometimes it never returns to normal. But with time you get used to it. It does become your "new" normal. Sorry for the discomfort.

It can be a long time..  My surgery was 3-15-2012 and I still get a few phantom pains every now and then.  I also have a hernia in the incision area.  But that is most likely due to the fact I did a motorcycle ride a bit too soon...   And I learned that wearing a mid section support is good for doing any strenous activity. (wish I would of worn it for that first bike ride..).   FYI, I had a bit of a more radical - radical surgery, my incision went from my breast bone to just above the navel then side to side, imagine an upside down "Y".   The only scan you can see easily is near the breast bone, otherwise unless someone does a very close inspection, it is all gone..!  And yes, Fox is correct, the whole ordeal felt weird for some time, lots of tingles and such at those nerves.

In time you will look back and just chalk it off to one of life's (B.S.) lessons...
