i will b getting my throat dilated next week.  for the first time it will b done in the office w/o any medicine.  i've always been asleep when this was done.  has anyone had it done in the office?  does it hurt?  how long after does ur throat hurt?  i've had so much pain from different things in this past year that anything that could cause pain scares me 2 death.  thanks in advance for ur feedback.

    Dilation

Years ago I was always having to have endoscopies and that was before you were given much in the way of medicine.  I always hated it.  It was the fear more than the pain of having it done for me.  They sprayed the back of my throat and would then give me something for nerves but I was still awake and scared.  Like I said it was more the fear and once a dilation was done (after surgery for a hital hernia) and the doctor told my husband that I fought it like crazy but I don't remember that.  A few years ago I had to have an endoscopy and although I knew I would be out, I was still very scared and my blood pressure showed it.

Since my husband's larygectomy all of his dilations have been done while he was put under and as an outpatient procedure.  Some doctor's have a room set up in their office with all the equipment.  Ask for something to help you, never hurts to ask.  In fact the last endoscopy I had done was in the doctor's office but I was given medication before the procedure and don't remember anything about it.

    Best wishes -- Sharon

    Dilations

I've had three dilations, but all under full meds.  My throat was sore for 2-3 days after each one, but I could still eat and take fluids with no problem.

No way I would let them do

No way I would let them do that without meds. I would die just thinking about it. Never heard of this. Can you not ask to be put under at least with twilight?  I pray there is no pain during or after for you.

    Sorry to Hear

I only had one dilation.  It really helped.  BUT I was out.  The doc I had puts peopleout to remove G-tubes, so they planned the dilation for when I'd already be out.

Not to even mention pain - the idea of that  3 foot hose is foul.

Glad it is done. Can't imagine a doctor would attempt that w/o putting you under...not like you haven't already been through enough.

    my fatherinlaw

my father in law was suppose to have a simular proceedure as he cant swallow to good - he has been cancer free almost 10 years , and back then they didnt have the technology they have now - i am in much better shape than he is post treatment wise. but anyway he went to his surgeon last week for what he thought was going to be a scraping of his throat and what they did instead was inject botox. it appears so far that it helped a lot

    Dilations

I've had over 50 dilations since 2007 and I have always been "under".  I have only had trouble twice.  In November 2007, the anesthesiologist gave me too much Propofol and I stopped breathing.  They bagged me for 15 minutes and took me to the ER.  They held me for a couple hours for observation and then released me.  Months later, I unfortunately had the same anesthesiologist.  He remembered me and instead of using Propofol, he used Ketamine which, to this day, I refuse to have again.  I sort of hallucinated.  It's hard to describe but what I remember vividly is I started coming out of the anesthesia before the dilation was done.  I remember fighting with them to get the danged thing out of my throat.  With that experience, I would NEVER allow a doc to do a dilation without being under.  Before anybody starts fearing Propofol, the first experience was on my third dilation and he just misjudged the amount to give me.  Other than the one Ketamine experience, I've had Propofol the other 50+ times with no bad experiences.

My dilations don't do me much good anymore since I still can't swallow but we do it to keep the esophagus open just in case.  I have one scheduled for the 6th of August.  I think it the fibrosis in my neck that is the main culprit in keeping me from swallowing.  I can't stress enough that if your neck starts stiffening up on you years after treatment, don't ignore it.  See a swallow therapist and start doing exercises to keep things open.  I let it go too far and am now paying for it.
