    eGFR

I guess most of us interested in such things (like you and me) are familiar with a number of such calculators - I've posted links to quite a few over the past year or so, including just the other day.

Anyway, you must be doing so many things right to have a personal value of 78 - you must share some of your secrets with us M!  What's the latest figure? Do let us know the results of your latest scan when known bound to be cause for rejoicing and cheering us all up.

    Can this be right?

Using that calculator my (Cockcroft-Gault) GFR is 181.7 and my (MDRD) GFR is 109.7

I'm now almost thirteen years out from radical nephrectomy so those numbers seem a bit too good to be true.

My creatinine has always been very low, though.

    OOPS!

Sorry, Digger, and maybe your GFR really is 181+ but somehow I doubt that.

    No secrets...just very lucky

    I don't drink much anymore. +10-15 beers / month

I'm mostly vegetarian, some fish - very, very little chicken, if any. A bit of meat once in a blue moon.

I lost 20 lbs over the past 3 months - although my last blood work at the heavier weight [ +20 ] was the same, maybe a little better.

** Need to excercise more :)+- 60 oz water/ day - No soda, very little juice [ usually cranberry w no added sugar ]

    Age - 50

    WEIGHT  - 240

    CREATININE - 1.14

    BUN - 13

    BUN/ CREATININE RATIO - 11.4

    ALBUMIN - 4.4

    You are probably correct...

Since it's an estimated number anyway there are probably all sorts of inconsistencies with the equation.

But overall I think my GFR probably is quite good.

Like I was telling Fox recently in another post... maybe it's all the alcohol I drink that helps out my GFR???

That's the story I'm sticking with, anyway.

What's this - you admitting again that you're lucky!

What height are you, by the way?  Stick to that good diet and a little more exercise and you'll keep that move in the right direction going.

But I have to say that that GFR of 78 is actually not so great after all.  Pshaw!! - I know someone who boasts a figure of 181 Wink

    Be nice, now...

I wasn't boasting... I just wanted to know if that equation could possibly be right.

You're welcome to run the numbers yourself and tell me what you think.

    50 year-old white male

    Radical nephrectomy July 2000

    250 pounds (yes I'm a fatty)

    Creatinine .78

    Albumin 3.8

My diet is very similar to yours...

Aside from the fact that I drink like a fish, I do eat a largely vegan diet.

Will try, but it comes hard to a jester.

I have such contempt for most calculators in this field that I think I'll pass.  (Of course there are plenty of genuinely invaluable calculators but some of them, like the survival nomograms are no better than gimmicks for individual patients.)

Your personal stats are strikingly similar toMichael's aren't they and I notice you have also omitted your height!  If you're both so shy about revealing your height , how about your BMI instead and I can work out yout height from that.  Wink

Not shy at all about my height...

You never asked, but my height is 5' 8" which is why I am considered to be so obese at 250 pounds.

Honestly I just don't know what you are driving at here, but I've decided to just chalk it up to internet miscommunication.

Probably I'm just plain lucky regarding my creatinine and GFR numbers.

However, I do believe that undertaking a vegan diet has helped.

Sorry if you think there is some sort of subterfuge here.

    Not shy

Lucky you - I'm painfully shy - always have been.

There are plenty of folks here, Digger, who can confirm that I'm a harmless oddball with a strange sense of humour.  Michael Limelife can attest to that.  He picked me up wrongly at first but we got that straightened out and we've been good buddies for a long while now.

You volunteered your stats and usually when people report their weight they also mention their height.  adman didn't either - maybe he thinks I know it already!  Neither of you is much of an ad, man, for a vegan/vegetarian diet for weight control!  I eat as much as I care to  without a vegetarian diet (though not quite Fox's special bikers' beer and pizza diet) and have never been over about 160 when 5'  9 1/2".  Now I'm exactly your height and around 145.  The diets you and adman are on now will do you both a lot of good in the longer term and I guess you're probably feeling healthier on it already. Right?

    To be honest...

I really just don't know what to make of you at this point so I'm probably not going to post anymore.  I'm certainly not going to apologize for my good numbers.  I've worked hard to maintain a vegan diet over the past five years and even if it hasn't resulted in a significant weight loss, my kidney function has remained almost perfect.  I consider that to be a bonus by the way.  Even without weightloss I've improved my numbers dramatically.  I really do wish you all the best of health, and hope that maybe someone else out there might learn that a plant-based diet can dramatically improve renal function.  My best to all.

    6' 2"

    That'll do fine!

I've a sense that I'm being set up here by Digger - I can see myself being the biter bit!

Digger, when you've been around here for a while you'll see that many members here have advocated or switched to a largely plant-based diet and Neil (NanoSecond) tirelessly details all the scientific evidence he's been collecting on diet.  Well done on staying on it as you have - you've doubtless done yourself a big favour.

    Not by me...

I have no part in any plot or game, I'm being truthful, as an 'Adman' should :)

    A question on eGFR

A question from someone who does not really know what is going on.  My number came up 57 but does that account for only having 1 kidney now?

    Ron

    A question on eGFR

With one kidney, that's a very satisfactory figure Ron and nothing to worry about at all.  I t may well be higher still in future as your remaining kidney gets a bit bigger and compensates for the loss of its former team-mate.
