One drug to rule them all: Researchers find treatment that kills every kind of cancer tumor

Researchers might have found the Holy Grail in the war against cancer, a miracle drug that has killed every kind of cancer tumor it has come in contact with.

The drug works by blocking a protein called CD47 that is essentially a "do not eat" signal to the body's immune system, according to Science Magazine.

This protein is produced in healthy blood cells but researchers at Stanford University found that cancer cells produced an inordinate amount of the protein thus tricking the immune system into not destroying the harmful cells.

With this observation in mind, the researchers built an antibody that blocked cancer's CD47 so that the body's immune system attacked the dangerous cells.

So far, researchers have used the antibody in mice with human breast, ovary, colon, bladder, brain, liver and prostate tumors transplanted into them. In each of the cases the antibody forced the mice's immune system to kill the cancer cells.

"We showed that even after the tumor has taken hold, the antibody can either cure the tumor or slow its growth and prevent metastasis," said biologist Irving Weissman of the Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, California.

One side effect of the treatment was that healthy cells were subjected to short-term attacks by the mice's immune system, but the effect was nothing in comparison to the damage done to the cancer cells.

Weissman's group recently received a $20 million dollar grant to move their research from mouse to human safety testing.

This is the one that I have been waiting for.  Weissman has been working on it for over 10 years.  His group was so far and the funding (grants) were not renewed during the Bush period in the early 2000, when there was all the controvery over using stem cells for reasearch.  He was able to get enough private funding from a private donor from I believe Montana.  It was enough to keep the study going.  Then when Obama came in, more money was again allotted for research and Weissman was able to obtain grants.  It did take a full year to get the FDA to approve it for human trials.  Unfortunately I do not have insurance coverage that recognizes clinical trials as viable treatment for stage iv cancers.

I have been in contact with the group, and am hoping that they will find a way to get me in the trial without having 25k up front, as I certainly do not have that kind of money.  This study in mice has proven that it kills most solid cell tumors, such as breast cancer, liver, etc.  It is very similar to the treatment that they have used for CLL that was so effective on the first 3 (the total in the first phase of the clinical trial).  They recently did 5 with CLL and it was also effective.

It is this trial that I have been waiting for.  It will take about a year to get to phase II, then they are hoping if all goes well that they can get an early release through the FDA.  I am so hoping, as it has worked in stubborn tumors that did not respond to chemo.  Cancer has not come back in any of the mice, and they have tried it on like 5-7 different cancers.  They take your blood, see what is missing from your immune system, and then add what is missing to a vaccine and reinject it.  When they were developing the protocol, the one researcher told me that they were looking at about 4 innoculations total to kill the cancer.''

This is the most exciting of all the trials as it works directly with your immune system, and even though the vaccine is the same, what is added comes directily from what is missing in your own system and what is needed to boost your immune system and kill the cancer cells.  Dr Weissman has done amazing work over the years in the fight for all cancers.

    Glad you posted this.

    WOW

WOW this is a breakthrough for people with  other types of cancer besides breast cancer. This sounds like the breakthrough we've been waiting for. And it helps those with BC who are fighting cancer in other  parts of their bodies.

  • Trials

Do you know of any clinical trials that are currently under way for Stage IV mestatic breast cancer patients?  I am trying to get my Mom into one of these trials and this drug sounds like a "wonder drug"...one that we need RIGHT NOW...

  • Staford anti-CD47 protien research

Their results on mice are incredible! Have they initiated clinical trials on humans yet?  How can we find out?

    Clinical Trials

I am not certain how one would go about to contact the Weissman's group.

What country do you live in?  Have you inquired from your mother's oncologist about clinical trials?
