Hubby Home From Hospital

in Head and Neck Cancer #1

Surgery went as planned. Thirteen teeth extracted. Mouth full of stitches. Port and G-tube placed. Can barely walk or get up and down, never unassisted. I think he was released too soon. They never determined if he could walk at the hospital. Just managed to get him in wheelcahair and out the door. I had to rent a car for at least a week to get him home and future appts.

Home health delivered supplies for feeding tube. Nurse to be here soon for instructions.

Back to MDA tomorrow for 10 hour day. Maybe they'll decide no chemo in his condition, but it's so very important to get started. Then back to MDA and Urologist on Friday.

Just too much! I didn't see the bus that ran over us but I feel the pain.  LOL

    Makes you wonder hunh ?  Did you get the license plate of that damn bus ?  Those darn stiches in the mouth are simply put miserable !  When my started desolving I was pulling strings out left and right...yuck.  Once your man starts getting that nutrician in properly his strenghth will gradually come back.  I'm keeping you guys in my daily prayers, and sending giant hugs to each of you !  Katie

    Holy moly....the 13 teeth being

    pulled and then stitched up made me SO grateful that I already had dentures before my "adventure" started...that just sounds miserable!!  The port shouldn't be painful tho....the only problem I had was they punctured my lung putting it in, so I ended up in the hospital for a week waiting for my lung to quit deflating.  The G-tube, tho....that hurt!!  It was painful enough that the poor Dr. who had messed up putting in the port, ended up doing a scan of the tube (poor girl had a hell of a guilt thing over the lung)....and it was she who gave me Norco for the pain.  Just so you know, if the tube is hurting, it's pretty normal and clears up in 3 days or so. 

    I was a wreck over my tube...and remember getting on here screaming HELP!!  I had no clue how to work it or how exactly things went into it, not to mention it simply creeped me out....home health were my angels.....nobody had given me a syringe (imagine that)...no wonder I couldn't figure out how I'd get anything into it...LOL.  The little nurse and I spent 30 minutes pouring water down it...and voila....a tuber was born Laughing.

    Sending you positive thoughts and prayers for tomorrow....new mantra...."HE WILL GET HIS CHEMO"....

    Not Really Sure, But

    I think the dammmm catheter and mouth are bothering him the most. He doesn't say much about the port or G-tube.

    Nurse was very nice and walked me thru the G-tube & pump(Thank God, there's a book with it). Just started with 20 ml for tonight as a test run as he can still drink the Glurcena at times.

    Not badmouthing the surgeon, but wonder just how good a medical dentist he is. He left little shards of teeth or bone in several places which are cutting hubby's tongue. Will be seeing him on Friday.

    Just think this loss of independence and control is really hitting him hard. He's also having a lot of trouble remembering words as he speaks. Don't know if it's all the stress or some other cancer related thing. Very defeating for him.

    It could be partly from

    anithesia....having trouble with words, I mean....as well as stress. 

    I'd forgotten, but when I got my teeth pulled, I had shrapnel coming out for weeks after....tho never so bad it was cutting my tongue....added misery on top of misery.....thank gawd the dentist is seeing him again this week!!   Your poor man has been dragged thru a knothole backwards lately.....with you in tow.  Warm hugs going your way, Wolfen...

    i am from the colorectal cancer board and my avatar name is johnnybegood.i am wolfens daughter.we live 1800 miles away from eachother but our hearts are very close.just want to thank all of you on this board for helping my mom and stepdad thru this journey.my mom actually found this site for me when i was first dx stage 3 in 2008.i am now  stage 4 dx in 2011 and still fighting the fight.thank you so much for your support and kindness it means so much to me that she has you all to turn to.thanks again....Godbless....johnnybegood

    Sounds like a busy schedule...

    Just try to leave some time in that scedule for you both to decompress and relax a little before even more of the battle continues...

    I am in awe of you, and what strength you have. Moving forward through the next steps, and the strength of your husband and daughter too!

    Sorry he's going through a rough week, the best part of it is you are already on your way past from these painful steps. When Dan was at his worst and lost for words, I finished so many sentences for him, and smiled a lot and just said, I get you, and it's ok, this will pass, and I will help as long as you need me too.. and smile some more. Sometimes he'd actually smile back.. I am not going to ask him if I got it right, or he just thought it was entertaining.. :) I hope you find ways to help him that are easier for you both. I found those times the worst, because it would help him, and I would feel worse because I had to, and he couldn't. Hopefully this will all be  blur to him in a week or two and he'll remember your loving support.

    Keep up the good works.. it's working.

    To think you are just warming–up for the fun.  The doctors and nurses try to get us all prepared for the treatment regiment, it does feel like being run over.

     

    Don’t forget to go over your must have (suggested) list as found in the Superthread.  I know you have traveled this road before, but be prepared and don’t forget to take care of yourself.

    Ugh - Tooth Shards

    My son got his wisdom teeth removed last month.  He had shard issues, too. 

    Thank goodness the nurse had some knowledge of the g-tube and pump.  Many of us weren't as lucky.  I learned a couple of unfortunate lessons thanks to nurses who were just as clueless as I was. 

    I had some issues with "losing" words during treatment (much more so than the day-to-day).  Not that I enjoy other people's sorrows, but it really helped me to know there were many others who'd gone through the same problem.  Still, it was very frustrating, and I feared it would make others think I really was losing it.
