Vitamins

I have never taken vitamins and supplements before, because they are unregulated and I don't trust products manufactured with no oversight at all. However, my PCP ran some tests and my body is significantly depleted of several essential vitamins and minerals. Could be from treatment, diarreah, or from the surgery I had for my second cancer. I eat well, but my body is not absorbing for some reason. So, I am looking for water soluble vitamins which are all natural and contain no wheat, no gmos, no artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols. I went all over tosn yesterday with no luck. Does anybody know of a really good vitamin product? I guess thhe fat soluble vitamins go right through people who have had treatments and are prone to diarreah.

Thanks for any information.

    Sorry, Marynb, I don't know

Sorry, Marynb, I don't know of any vitamins like the ones you're looking for. But on a related note, I just recently went on a diet for those with IBS - had a bad year of off and on diarreah and was looking for something to help. I came across some information from an IBS site (and from a book I bought) and the new diet has helped A LOT to resolve the diarreah issues. Over the past year I lost about 15 pounds (and I was at a low weight already). I think that my body wasn't absorbing nutrients due to the 'd'. I haven't yet begun to put weight back on but can feel it coming - after starting the IBS diet I feel fuller and am able to eat more (which would mean, in turn, that I'm absorbing more nutrients, including vitamins, right? I hope so!). The biggest thing that was changed was that I started only eating soluble fiber on an empty stomach. What a help - and what a relief! Just wanted to post this info in the hopes it might help others suffering from the dreaded runs.

    Fatigue and diet
The reason that my doctor did extensive blood work was to see if there was a rreason for my fatigue. Good news was that I am not anemic anymore. However, my body is abnormally deficient in many vitamins and minerals. It is hard to build the body back up if our bodies are not absorbing. This could be the main reason for fatigue. I did find some vitamins that seem to fit the bill today. Whole Foods carries RainbowLight brand all natural vitamins. I am going to give them a try.

Sorry to hear that you are going through this.  Before I was diagnosed with Cancer, I was seeing a naturopath for malabsorption of nutrients.  She had me taking a broad spectrum enzyme and greens which really helped.  A naturopath might be something worth looking into for you.  She has also really helped me with my fatigue and boosting my immune system post treatment.

I have also found good natural supplements at Whole foods.  Some Health food stores can be good as well.

    Good luck with everything.

Thanks. I am not sure that I know what a naturapath is or how to find one. I may give it a try. Thanks for that tip. Wouldn't it be great if there were doctors who connected the dots and treated our whole bodies? Someday.

Vitamins you might want to look into

    http://www.newchapter.com/

They have a very good track record with me.  Non-GMO, all organic, miminal processing, and have something for everyone.

May I also suggest using something like a nutri-bullet or juicer.  I drink several vegetable smoothies everyday with some fruit in them for taste but mostly all greens.

I use the Nutri-bullet.  It is suppose to break down the veggies/fruits to a predigested structure.  So you body can more readly absorb all the mineral/vitamins, etc.

Hope this helps, it has for me.  :)

So sorry you found your self

So sorry you found your self joining this list.  Wishing you the best as you go forward in your fight on this cancer.  My husband went through his treatment last year.  His last day of tx was Nov.2nd 2013.  So far the pet scan showed him to be cancer free.  You are most definitely on to something important as far as nutrition is concerned, kudos to you.  Wish I could get my husband more oriented in that direction, old habits are hard to break, lol.  As to your scource for those all organic, non gmo's beware.  Proctor & Gamble bought them last year.  That puts a big question mark on anything produced being natural.  P & G is not in it for our health, it's all about profit.

Thank you! Will check those vitamins and supplements out. I just got the nutribullet, it really is a handy little machine! Everybody should have one. I am working on finding recipes that I like. Thank you for the tips.

Who did P & G buy? The problem with all supplements is there is absolutley no oversight by governmental agency. It is frightening to put unregulated substances into my body at this point.

Below is the link of the news

Below is the link of the news story.  You are right it is not regulated, yet we do not hear of someone over dosing on vitamin C or D.  Yet I know of people that had horrible side effects from prescription meds.  Let alone all the junk available at the grocery store sold as wholesome food.

Personally I look at radiation & chemo as poison.  When you are handed a bio hazard bag incase there is a leak from the chemo pump, it's poison.

    Poison

I knew the chemo I was getting was poison when I saw the nurse put on 3 pairs of latex gloves before getting my IV hooked up.

I believe Vitamin E is a supplement that can have adverse side effects when taken in doses higher than recommended.  I have to believe that it is possible to overdose on any supplement or vitamin, but incidents do not get reported because they are not regulated.

Calcium supplements are another example.  One adverse side effect of too much calcium can be kidney stones.

On the flip side of this, my medical oncologist told me not to waste my money on any vitamins or supplements due to malabsorption.  That has not kept me from taking the ones I take, but honestly, I don't know if they do me any good or not.  As always, it's best to get these nutrients from foods as much as possible.

I agree that most foods people put into their bodies are nothing but chemical soup and frankenfood! I tried to eat well all my adult life(can't say much for the foods we were fed in the 50's). In the past, I was more willing to splurge when with friends. Now, I am very careful and I won't eat chemicals if I can at all help it. That being said, there have been innumerable cases where supplements have been shown to cause harm. some have been pullled from the market. Many of the vitamins and supplements on the market are manufactured in third world countries where there are no standards at all! Many now come from China. It is quite dangerous to put some of these things into our bodies. We, as cancer patients, know that everything that is harmful does not show overnight, but may take years to kill us. We have to proceed with caution. I am looking for supplements that are manufactured in the USA and have some level of oversight. As a general rule, I try hard not to put anything into my body unless it is USDA certified organic and grown or made in USA.

    Exactly, Kraut

With some research, you will find vitamins that are clean. I have used Shaklee in the past with much success. I get most of my vitamins from food and supplement very little.  One MD tells me no, another tells me yes.  Who the hell knows?  I just research and do the best I can with the information I have.

The problem with gastrointestinal cancers and prolonged diarreah and other digestion problems is that we cannot get essential vitamins and minerals from food because the food doesn't stay in our system long enough for absorbtion to occur. That is why it is important to have follow up blood work to see if there are any deficiencies in our bodies which will effect our health in the long term. Once the deficiences are identified, water soluble vitamins and supplements are necessary.

    Green Vibrance

I would check Green Vibrance out. Drinking vitamins is definitely where it is at and so are greens but the Bullet cannot do what this product can do. If you read the label you will see why. Ask the people in any health food store about it.

A naturopath is a really good idea too. Psyllium husks completely got rid of diarreah for me.

    Good luck,

    Sandy

    Vitamin Drink Mix

I also take Nature's Bounty Multivitamin Drink for Women, mixing it with Almond Juice, frozen fruit and a bannana. Most of the time I also add the Green Vibrance, since it is more convenient than waiting 45 minutes like it says to do.

In the evening I mix more Green Vibrance with the Psyllium husks and sometiems put Psyllium husks in the smoothie in the morning. I know longer seem to have to worry about diarreah. I do have problems with acid, though.

I battle fatigue all the time and found that an energy shot (5 hour) helps a lot. It contains a lot of B vitamins which I can't seem to get enough of. I am going to the gym now pretty much every day, which is something I couldn't have imagined doing a few months ago. (I had whooping cough it took me forever to get rid of!) Naps are really an important part of my day too.

    Good luck,

    Sandy

Hi. Thanks. Where do you get Green Vibrance? What is it? Also, I will look for that Nature's Bounty drink. Where do you get it? Thanks for these tips.

    Sorry . . .

that you are having that problem, marynb.  I have not encountered any vitamin deficiences during or after treatment. Lucky I guess?

Here's more information regarding optimal juicing and juicers that everyone may find interesting.  There is no way that I could ever use the NutriBullet since it incorporates all of that fiber.  I juiced 8-10 glasses of juice daily during treatment and still juice at least 4 8oz of green juice and carrot juice daily.  Yes, fiber is good.  But not for me in that quantity.

Good luck and blessings to all as you continue on your individual paths to healing and wellness.

    Juicers

I looked at the website and thought the Q & A was very good.  However, I was taken aback by the recommendation of a $2,400 juicer.  That one won't be in my kitchen, I can guarantee it.

    Nutribullet.
    Hi Martha,

No, I won't be rushing out to get that one either! Wow. I have to say that I love the NutriBullet! I have an expensive juicer, but it is not the same. The Nutribullet is fantastic and so handyl the drinks taste so much better! There is absolutely NO PULP at all. Love it, really. The only caution is Unless you use organic fruits and vegetables, DO NOT USE it. The pesticides and carcinogens would only go straight to the cells. We don't need that!

I highly recommend getting one! It is about 100 dollars, easy to use, and the drinks taste great! I think it is helping me.
