Pcp pneumonia

in Lymphoma (Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin) #1

Well one cycle from completion of my fathers r- chop regimen and he was recently diagnosed with PCP pneumonia, community acquired.  His last chemo has been postponed for 1 week and he is on 3 weeks of double dobahri trim along with oxygen with exertion.  My father has no resp history.  Has anyone ever had this while in chemo and how did you do?

    PCP

    Hi cnewtrn.  Your father probably got PCP due to weakened immune system from chemo.  I believe PCP is very treatable.  He just needs to be very careful while he is neutropenic in between treatments.  I don't have experience with it so I can't share that way.   They may require him to take bactrim or similar as a prophylaxis therapy until he completes treatment and his blood work comes back up.

    I'm sorry he's going through this and hope he recovers soon and gets back on track.  Wishing you both well and sending hugs.

    Hi Cnewrn,

    So sorry to hear about your dad having PCP.  It is so fustrating when they are due for chemo and then an infection sets in.  I'm sure they have started him on antibiotics immediately and will clear it up. 

    My mom has already battled several infections since she started chemo.  The latest is a blood infection.  They believe it could have come from her catheter or even her port.  They also have her on very strong antibiotics.  She is currently in the hospital. Her cultures need to be clear for 2 weeks before being discharged.  I hope your dad starts to feels better soon.  All the best to you and your family.

    Hey Emily.  It is nice to hear from you.  I feel like you and I started this nightmare together.  I a, sorry to hear about your mother being in the hospital again.  My father was in last week, now home on antibiotics and oxygen until the pneumonia clears.  He was suppose to have his last chemo this past Tuesday, but now has postponed by one week.  Pretty sad that the chemo has worked on his disease but now he is suffering the side effects.  I keep my fingers crossed that the pneumonia clears.

    Hi Sue

    Hi Sue.  How are you?  You should offically be completed with your Rituxan Infusions.  Good Luck to you.  I'ts so nice to hear from you.  My mom's antibiotics are kicking in and she has had clear cultures since Monday.  This has been some hell of a few months.  I'm am exhausted.  Just as she seems to recover and get some strength back, she takes another step back.  At least this time she had her chemo on time.  She is a bit weak.  She is hopefully being discharged again early next week.  Hope all is going well with you.  I hope you are going out celebrating this weekend.

    It's also nice to hear from you.  Yes, I believe we did start this nightmare together.  it has been a long journey for us.  My mom is a bit older then your dad I think.  Although she was in great health prior to this, her age is making it diffucult.  She has a blood infection, which could have come from the port, or her catheter.  Both have been removed.  She got very sick quickly.  She is on very strong antibiotics and luckily her cultures have been clear since Monday.  It did make her very weak.  How is your dad feeling? I'm surprised they sent him home so quick.  They finally found a chemo that has been working well on my mom and then she gets this infection.  Crazy right? 

    I hope things are better with your dad.  Don't worry, the Pneumonia will clear.  It's very common.  Stay positive.  If you need to talk, I'm also always here.  Let me know how he is doing.
