in Esophageal Cancer #1

I have posted just a few times but monitor the posts daily.  my husband was diagnosed in Sept with t3n1m0 and treated at the Proton Center at the University of Pennsylvania.  pet scan on New Year's Eve was good and surgery is Monday, January 14.

i have learned so much from all of you and understand some of the problems he may experience. i will share his experience with you as he recovers from surgery.

    Your husband is in good hands; University of Pennsylvania has an excellent reputation for treating esophageal cancer and is an NCI certified cancer center. I am sure you know that it is a rather long surgery typically about 6 to 7 hours. Hopefully you will have someone to keep you company. Depending on what surgical technique is used your husband will spend a day or two in intensive care, and then be moved to the step down floor once they are comfortable there are no surprises. Normally nothing by mouth for about 5 days and you should have the pathology results back in four to five days. I am sure he is a bit anxious at this point, I know I was.

     I will be thinking of both of you on the 14th and sending positive thoughts your way for a successful surgery, good swallow test, and a clear path report.

    Pat,

    good luck on Jan. 14th. There are good stories from the Penn Cancer center. Just my opinion, and these comments are second hand, but here is a few items from other PA people.  I do not have first hand experience but have heard Penn Cancer group is very good. Be careful with the communications between the in patient hospital and the Cancer group. You may want to re-inforce and double check that the hospital is regularly communicating with the cancer center. Any doubts pick up the phone and call your cancer doc.

    There are 2 Penn people on this discussion board perhaps they will respond as well.

    Surgery at Penn

    Thank you for your thoughts.  We did run into that communication problem between the cancer center and HUP when he was in the hospital in November.  It is an issue Penn has.  I now have several docs on "both" sides to reach out to.

    I enjoyed my visit with Freeman the other day. He sounds like he's ready for the the next step in this adventure. Good luck to both of you. I'll be thinking of you tomorrow. Good luck and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

    Good luck tomorrow. You and your husband will be in my thoughts and prayers. Just remember to take things one day at a time. This is a marathon, not a sprint, and there will be many ups and downs along the way.
