hey guys, out of the hospital after 29 days, what a ordeal, after a battle with a severe infection and almost not making it, somehow i did!!! turns out i had a ruptured bowel and that caused the infection, i have surgery scheduled for the 17th, my fear is after 2 colon resections there is a huge chance that im going to have a colostomy bag, this scares me to death,  ive always been active and abel to do what i like even around all the chemo and stuff, if anyone has exp with this any input would be wonderful!!! thank you all again for all the great advice ive gotton!!! god bless!!!...Tommy

    wish all the best

Have no experience on that score. But I understand the anxiety. I just had a colon resection and was worried about the possibility of a bag. I was lucky (no bag). Many people said the bag is not that bad and would not interfere in one's active life. I hope you would not need it.

    Best of luck

I have a bag and although I wish i didn't have a bag....it's really not all that bad. I live a very normal life with it! In fact people who don't know I have a bag would never know! In the beginning it was kind of crazy with leaks and all that lovely stuff, but after 2 1/2 years its all good! I am thankful that I am here this bag saved my life I hope....

    Dear Tommy

The Ostomy Book: Living Comfortably with Colostomies, Ileostomies, and Urostomies

Barbara Dorr Mullen and Kerry Anne McGinn RN BSN OCN

It was recommended by my ostomy nurse. It is an excellent source for the person just starting out. It was written by a mother who has an ostomy and her daughter who is an ostomy nurse. You may find it at your library, but definately on Amazon or perhaps at the local book store.

    Sorry about the font

For whatever reason when I did a copy/paste (even after changing originating fonts) I could not edit it before posting...it kept disappearing.

Anyway, you can live a very active life with an ostomy.  Of course like any other change in our lives, it will take a bit of getting used to, but there is no reason to fear it.

Ask any questions you have and those of us with an ostomy will try to answer.

Read John23's blog re stoma care.  Steve (husband) found it to be very helpful.

On second thought, if you end up having a stoma you should read it.  No point reading it now.  Just know that you can live a full and wonderful life with an ileostomy or colostomy.
