I was very fortunate that I have an oncologist that believes healthy eating and exercise is the best medicine to beat this disease! At our first meeting, he said first, don't stop working. Keeping an active normal life style will make your journey so much easier. Second, he said if you don't exercise start now! Schedule it and make sure it is an appointment you always keep. Ok, I wasn't that great about exercising before so I decided if I was going to start now I needed a goal so training for a marathon. Yes, I started my training at the exact time I started chemo! Third, make sure I was eating healthy. I cut out all processed food and as many toxins as I can. Overall my treatment has been easy! There have been a couple side issues not related to the cancer but other than those bumps I have not had nauseu or fatige so his plan must have been the right one for me!

    exercise
If you watch the ads for various weight training equipment, the usually say "just an hour a day three times a week for 6 weeks." When I first started any muscle exercises, my peers said" start with light weights, do 3 sets of 10 repititions, When the 30th is as easy as the first, increase the weight. It will take 6 weeks at thee times a week to see any results. But then the muscles start getting bigger. Most people don;t continue for 6 weeks so never see any results. A lot of treadmills, etc. are now expensive cloths racks. Sticking with it provides magnificent results. LOL

    Hey Pete,

Thanks for the reminder. Beautiful day in Minnesota today...we have had lots of rain lately so nice to have the sun shining for a good long walk or bike ride. If the humidity starts up again here we just step outside and it feels like a sauna! Ha Ha

    "Minnie"

    good morning minnie
its lovelly here as well, enjoy your ride, the sauna outside, here its sunny but freezing.
kids sport for me today, no yoga.

daughter is doing netball, son soccer. i will just walk and rest.

making my son with a cough an orange, lemon, lime and ginger drink to get rid of his cough with a dash of magnesium oratate. experimenting on using my juicing on to help improve the kids health.

Thanks for encouraging this. I agree exercise helps us in preparing for surgery, recovery, and reoccurence. I was in pretty good shape when first diagnosed but for past two years I've increased my exercise and improved my diet. So I'm in better shape for my next upcoming surgery. I walk 4 days a week, and lift 10 lb weights 3 times a week. I manage to do this modest stuff while working full-time. You don't need to overdue it. An added bonus is how this improves one's emotional and psychological health. Every little bit helps. Good health to all.

    good morning yovita and welcome
everyday is a good day to exercise, its great to read what you have been doing. welldone.

the studies read great, they initially got me moving, but the reality of how good i feel, as you say makes all the difference.

for me it was exercise first and then i started to focus on my diet intensley.

you are so right, "every little bit helps" and every positive post here is an example of others to make the effort, to try and get an exercise habit going. it only takes 21 days to make a new habit, to grow the new neuronal patheways for exercise and prune away the brains couch potatoe paths.

its a lovelly wish, "good health to all" , mental , physical and even spiritual.

the not overdoing your limits is a great point, thats what my trainer pointed out yesterday for me. i still have the sniffles and my muscles have recovered well from yesterdays weights.

if its of an any help, my coach is obsessed with technique, having someone else to watch you do weights, to spot you, to check your posture well i would say its essential. no matter how good i think i am doing a routine, he always say shoulders down, or butt up. being guided, coached has made such a difference. then he always says "one more, you got one more have't you"

we have to protect our spine and good posture has been drummed into me. i am going to do an intu flow workout. look at my blog if you are interested on this, its on utube the intuflow workout, i purchased the dvd's but they have not arrived. its all about joints and flexibility. i do my intuflow in the kitchen.

good morning coppercent, its a fabulous day here
i think you are one of the first to say in this post about your onc recommending exercise. oh my god you are lucky, your onc sounds great, i would stick with them.

one day the progressive onc will have treadmills in their offices, they will doing our consults while we walk. well maybe not, but if my onc had a treadmill, i would use it and chat to her while walking and talking.

the marathon goal is just fantastic, i did my first marathon a few months ago.

eating well and getting the toxins out, am i dreaming to here others here doing this now.
yes sweating is great, and well oxygenating our cells, what a great way to make our cancers life unpleasant.

your story sounds similar to mine, i hope you join us. post your exercise achievements.
i started this post series, when i started chemo as well, that was about 18 months ago.

its so simple, why do we actually have an amazing body if we don't use it. its designed to be used, in fact whats the point of living if we don't move our body around.

its a bit like renting an apartment , paying the rent and never using the apartment.

they say use it or loose it, maybe that applies especially to colorectals and exercise.

welcome, thanks for sharing your experience.

thanks for sharing the great news about your onc, he needs a pat on the back, to get that advice and for you to flow it is just fantastic.

great doctors conventional and alternative need recognition.

    Back in the game
Chemo was on Wed. and it affects my legs but hoping to ride my bike and return to walking.

Baby steps, but trying to incorporate exercise with healing. :-)

So good for the mind too!

    Barb

    good morning barb, baby steps
it like it, hey thats how we started life way back when, for me that was 45 years ago.

baby steps work literally and figuratively.

if your body is suffering some post chemo protests, you may try some naturopathic basics. actually my first post 18 months ago was a walk to the naturopath about 10 kilometers away. hopefully your gut heals, if you legs are not good i would find out why, it maybe your gut. i am having a probiotic metagenics probex right now.

some electrolytes, some healthy juices and maybe your legs will be better, don't over do, but don't under do it either.

you are right about exercise being good for our mind, i would be locked away if i did not workout. i was so cranky and angry before i exercised regularly.

did you know that for severe depression, some enlightened shrinks get really depressed patients exercising 7 hours a day, yes 7 hours a day. colorectals need for recurrence prevention is just 27 met hours per week. thats about 4 45 minutes workouts on a treadmill.
that buys entry into the 75% recurrence prevention club. but that is an exclusive club that i still trying to join. when my cea is back to <3 i will resubmit my memebership.

i am aiming at an hour a day, of moderate sweating. but thats on hold while muscle building as i understand it, aerobic exercise is catabolic, ie uses protein from muscles. as i am protein challenged with digestive enzymes difficiencies i lipase specifically i kind of focus my diet on absorbing protein before and after workouts.

the treadmill clothes rack, how true.

so i guess we could say, get your clothes of the treadmill and get onto it.

actually i get my clothes off often and have a look at my body and have a critical look at areas that can be improved. my scares and hernia always remind me of what a high price we pay to exist after playing the colorectal game of life. but i also see less fat, more muscles and i am encouraged.

great to here you have good results from the weights.

i am amazed just how lifting weights gets my heart really pumping. i put my sons hand on my chest yesterday, i said feel this.

exercise is fun, thats for making this key point. if its not fun then a few of us need to change what we are doing, we have so many choices. i might go for a surf this afternoon, the water will be cold.

then i get a hydrotherapy workout for free.

It's amazing what a world class vegan muscle building coach can get out of a cancer patient.
I can lift more than I realise especially with help , support and guidance and praise. Funny we get all those good things here on can from each other.
Having a fiesta and then stretch and Qigong class tonight. Martial arts is the way to go .

I got the intu flow DVD from Scott Sonnar, and am starting it slowly. The theory of intu flow to get joints moving is so health giving, it's so simple.

    thats great jeff
i did another very hard leg weightlifting session, to the point where you can hardly stand at the end.

i have a great coach, i got to sleep to build muscle.

now my weight is going up and the fat is going down. in the best shape of my life.

now i hope the weight increase is muscle not tumour!

only someone with crc can make that joke.

anyone else going for a walk or doing exercise ?

ps i am been weight training seriously for about 2 months, told the coach about some fused lower back discs today and let him feel the hernia defect. going to investigate if the weights i am lifting are bad for hernias. so its good to get medical advice about your exercise program.

another hard upper body weight session
these weight training sessions are sessional, very relaxing but difficult.

i really put my mind into the exercises, its a very calming kind of intense activity, that requires lots of focus.

its so good to have a great trainer. i have tried weight training before but gotten limited results, now its really working.

i was even using the visualisation techniques to mentally practice lifting the heaviest weight i have lifted so far.

doing dead lifts and lat pull downs.
actually getting some noticable muscle growth.
this has shown up in the creatin in my last bloods.

so to build muscle, i must be getting protein to the muscles, i must be absorbing the protein from the diet.

anyone else exercising, its so good for health and may help with our cancer treatments, but ask your medical professional.even a walk is a good start, but walking is contra indicated if you are trying to build muscle mass. google catabolic versus anabolic metabolism if you are interested.

    Hi Pete:
I haven't been consistent with the weights but I know its so important. My arms are weak from none use/no lifting since my surgery. I have been walking but I was in the south helping my mom after her knee surgery and it was so hot and humid outside.

I noticed some ads for qigong and am going to check this out as well as your google suggestion.

I walk on day four after my lovely oxalyp. infusion My legs feel very weak the first couple of days.

It makes a big difference to even be active! Hope I can get to class schedule for yoga by August.

Thanks for the update and I"d like to hear how others work in exercise w/chemo, etc., if feeling well

Thanks Pete for inspiring us and sending energy!!!

Some yoga, some bicycling. Yesterday went kayaking, and next week (yes, mid-July) I'll be back on the ice for a curling tournament in Cape Cod! The Summer 'Spiel! 3 days of beach and ice, and not just in drinks (odd combo, but tons of fun!)

i love your picture alice, tons of fun is how exercise is supposed to me.

so tonight i did another qigong yoga combo, its actually a form of moving mediation that i am getting into, as you get more experience with the moves they become more automatic, your focus less and relax and your awareness becomes more expansive.

so you get energy healing, stetching, some strength and meditation. now thats a seriously healthy combo.

now dear barb, doing exercise and chemo and bottles, well even walking is a challenge when you have a bag and or diarrhea. but just take it one step at a time.haha!!!

walking is good for cardio and circulation and companionship.

to keep and build muscle well resistance training is the word. i have a greater trainer and have done what he said, it works. but i am getting the rest he said, i am doing the diet he recommended. if you want to keep and or build muscle its the combo of resistance training, sleep, rest, diet. now diet then gets into bcaa's and protein powder. you might need some stomach acid boosting and digestive enzymes as well. its a slippery slope, all our biologies are so different. just goodluck exercising and having fun is the key. i love to hear about your adventures on the otherside of the planet.

how are you going pepe ? its been a while, can we go for a walk together ?
i still am getting over this flu bug.
