Uterine cancer metastasized to lung & stomach

On Friday my daughter will have uterine surgery at Kaiser Sacramento.
Does anyone know how long after the operation Chemo or radiation would begin?
The doctor is not forthcoming with information and just says one step at a time.

    Terry,

Sorry about your daughter. I guess it will depend on the type of surgery she has. Total abdominal surgery vs. robotic which is less invasive and requires shorter recuperation time.

Between my surgery and start of chemo about six weeks later I had a second opinion consult and port placement (an outpatient surgical procedure).

Do you know why the doc is not free with info? Is he concerned about HIPPA? (consent will take care of that). But I have always thought that oncologists don't want to tell us too much for fear that our minds will start working on us - worry, perceived problems, etc. I would encourage you to have a heart to heart with doc and tell him you want to know more. Does your daughter also want this info? Some patients actually prefer to NOT know too much. If your daughter has told this to the doc, then he may be honoring her wishes. Just my 2 cents on that one.

Sending prayers to you all, Mary Ann

    Chemo
First, Thank you for your prayers.

He told my son in law he didn't want to give out too much at once as it is too much to process.

But then that leaves us all with "Dr. Google", that is how I found this site.

She will be having a full hysterectomy. The lung and stomach was just discovered
yesterday in the CT scan. She is in so much pain the usual pain killers are not working so she is on very heavy meds and out of it most all the day.

Six weeks sounds like a long time to wait to me. Was the second opinion you had the same opinion as the first?

The doctor may want to wait
The doctor may want to wait until after the surgery whenb even he will have a better picture of what is going on inside. I was able to start chemo. @ 4. Wks post op despite complications and an extended 2 wk hospital stay. So it may depend on many factors some of which are unknowns at this time. Taking this one step at a time is very good advice. Supporting your daughter thru the surgery should be priority at this time.
Sending positive thoughts that surgery proceeds uneventfully.

I also had what they called "intractable pain" and on a morphine pump before my surgery 6 days later!! Doc said he thought pain was due to "cyst that broke". I had no prior symptoms. So I sure can empathize with you.

Does she have a gynecologic oncologist? That would be my recommendation. and, yes, my second opinion was same as first - both gyn ocologists. Maybe they will involve multiple doctors/specialties for her situation.

Some other things - inquire about tissue assay (or functional profile). They test tissue with multiple agents to find what gives best response. And get copies of her records. Try to stay calm.

There is a site where you can see what protocols are for different types of cancer. See nccn.com (national comprehensive cancer network) - my doc uses this.

    Sacramento?
    Hi Terry-
I'm in Woodland, right around the corner.
So sorry to hear about your daughter and hope her surgery goes well. Is it being done my a gynecologic oncologist? If not, please insist on a referral to one after surgery before beginning any treatments. I believe Kaiser is supportive of second opinions, and I think that a second opinion would be reassuring. There should be plenty of time between her surgery and healing before treatments are started.
MaryAnn's suggestion about a tissue assay is also important. A lot of places don't routinely do that. It's expensive.
The NCCN site is very good.
Will be thinking about you and your daughter and family tomorrow.
Sending hugs and prayers from across the river.

    3 wonderful ladies
    To Annie, Mary Ann, Suzanne,

Thank you, thank you, for your support and suggestions. I went to the NCCN web site today and have taken notes of all of your suggestions to take with me.

Yes, she has an gynecologic oncologist.

My daughter is at Kaiser Sacramento, she lives in Roseville.

We are traveling up there from just outside of San Francisco.

We do feel nervous, but both my husband and I feel better after having heard from you three ladies. We didn't know where to turn for advise and being so far
from Sac. we were getting our information second hand.

    Every grateful,

    Terry
