    The big day

You are getting close to your initiation into our club. I always remembered pre-op as the liquid plumber they give you the day before surgery. After that everything is a piece of cake. Good luck and may you join us quickly after your surgery.

    Hard Day!
I know this is a hard day because it brings into real focus the reality of the surgery.

Next week at this time you will have had the two most unleasant days behind you. You are almost there. Just keep hanging in there.

I have been thinking about you everyday. As the time got nearer I posted less and less.

We are sure all brave people going through this.

    Keep up the good work.

Iceman: I had no preop instructions at all. Eat what you want and no drinking of that stuff.

    Op
Op = optimistic. Nothing to it - piece of cake.

Good luck for a speedy and not too uncomfortable recovery - by now you know the drill and are well up to following it so we know all will be well in no time.

    Mom's words...
    LD,

Focus on the last line above "Not to worry, I am going to be just fine.", about a week before my surgery my mom (82 yrs old at the time) took me by the shoulders, looked deep into my eyes and told me almost exactly the same thing. I did as I was told and stopped worrying, now its your turn and from experience I can tell you that making my mom mad is worse than the surgery so do as you're told. Seriously, a month from now you will wonder what all the fuss was about and while beating cancer doesn't put a trophy on the shelf for all to see you will feel like a champion just the same.

    Good luck and Godspeed,

    Gary

Yes ... you will be fine
I started walking my long walks on Sunday. 3 miles. Started back to work on Monday .... less than 3 weeks post op. After work I have been walking 2 miles everyday. Day one back to work I was sooooo tired. But I think that was from sitting, napping, recouperating so much. I am back to 'normal':) You will be too. Just follow the recommendations from everyone. I got lucky....before going into the operating room, the preop nurse asked if I did the infamous bowel cleanse. I said no. She looked at me like I had done something wrong. I told her the doctor told me to go on the specified liquid diet the day before. I was only allowed clear liquids: boullion, jello, popcicles, apple juice, cranberry juice, 7up, water, white grape juice. All I want. So I did not have to drink the nasty stuff. I was so glad. Nothing the day of the surgery. So when I woke up from surgery I had to beg for ice chips my mouth was so dry from the oxygen etc. The surgery was the 'best sleep I ever had.' That first relaxation shot they put in the iv knocked me out. The beauty of it all it that up to then you are still just you - feeling all good. The relaxation shot makes you so happy and sleepy and zonked. The operation ... no recollection at all. The post op ... as the anesthesiologist promised 'we'll be giving you something for pain...it's GOOD STUFF.' In the hospital you get the same good stuff. By the time you go home, the worst of it is over and you didn't even feel much of it. Good luck. I will jump on here everyday and 'talk' to you. You WILL be fine.

    Good luck Monday...
    LD,

I'll be offline for a couple days, but wanted to let you know you will be in my thoughts and prayers on Monday. You are well prepared and know what to expect, you'll take a nice nap and when you wake up keeping you comfortable will be the main focus, but best of all you will have made the switch from "having" to "HAD" cancer. Now, do as they instruct, take the pain meds on time, walk as soon and as often as you can, and drink plenty of water, you'll be back to your ol'self before you know it, I promise.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon,

    Gary

Good luck on monday. Make sure family and friends keep the jokes to a minimum and for yourself, try not to sneeze. Before you leave the hospital, get one more of their special pain shots

    Jeff is right
That 'one more shot' used to be a bad thing for me :) (Are you with me on this one fox and others?) But the 'one more shot' in the hospital was awesome. As for sneezing...I would get ready to sneeze...I would do the AH Ah Ah .... but the CHOO never happened. I think my body just wouldn't let it happen. It was really strange!

    Thanks Again Everyone
Thanks everyone for you continued support and words of wisdom. I am a bit scared as is to be expected..I will make sure I ask for that shot just before I come back home. I hope I am asleep like you were jrod before you went into surgery. A peacful sleep sounds real good. It is so comforting to hear how well you are doing and all back to normal.

I am getting my little overnight bag packed this weekend. I need to quit smoking so this hospital stay should give me a head start on that. I will be taking some nicotine patches or logenzes with me just in case so I don't get to grouchy at the nurses. I would really like to quit cold turkey like I did before. We will see! I think this is going to be a good thing for me all the way around.

I will check in with you all again next week after I get home..

    One more shot
..I just didn't need that much pain med. I really think that being a therapist helps me understand pain. (let alone having at least a half dozen other surgeries.) I just moved carefully. Once I got home, I got tired of hurting and used a few percs . I had much more pain in late Dec. and Jan. when the cancer spread to my bones. Then I needed quite a few more percs just to get around the house. That was worse by far.( and yes, I have a tens unit but didn't use it.) Thought I'd be checking out for sure. I've been essentially pain free since Feb.

If we miss you tomorrow, lil'darlin, Do well and make us proud Monday!

I did not need much, nor did I ask for it. They had a schedule in the hospital where they administered meds. I could not even tell you how often. But I felt ok. It seems there was someone checking on me every 3 hours or so. Either for vitals, etc. or for meds which included the one for pain in the iv - I can't remember the name of it. And also they gave me Tylenol. And a shot for anticlotting. That was about it. You will be great. Please let us know how you are doing in a few days when you are able to. PS I sent you a private message - hope it helps.

Good luck LD You are going to do great. Things will move so fast tomorrow that you will not have too much time to be afraid.

I don't go out easy so the shot did not put be to sleep. So I told them I wanted to see the DaVinci machine. It is very large. About the size of our smaller powder room. I couldn't see it as well as I would have liked because it was already draped in plastic. It was interesting though.

I had the morphine pump. First time I have had it. Best thing ever invented.

For me the hardest thing was getting out of bed. You have to have some kind of system. You can't roll and come up at the same time. Once I got that figured out the pain meds took care of everything else.

Don't forget to get that extra gown to put on like a robe so your hiney doesn't hang out.

Believe it or not the hard part is over now. I hated that waiting.

Good luck! You are going to do fine. There is a lot of pain the day of surgery and the next and then clear sailing.

Right now I am just fighting the fatigue.

    Post ASAP.

    Me too...
I was waiting what I feel is the 'correct' waiting period before I posted, but I am anxious to hear how you are feeling. I hope you are feeling great....or at the very least, not bad. I agree with fishknees, the getting up out of bed, and - for me - getting into bed was my most difficult task. Other than that I moved around slow but sure. Talk to you soon.

    Hellooooooo
I am still hoping everything went well. You are probably home by now????? And resting and letting others wait on you for your needs. Let us know how you are when you are up to it.
