In reading Tonsil Dad's post and learning he is a framer of artwork and photos. I decided to start a post on hobbies and other interests.

I know myself (other than fishing, LOL), one of my hobbies and first loves has always been art. I mainly like to do wildlife art, and portraits, usually always in acrylic or prismacolor pencils.

Here are a few of the ones that I have done;

Night Heron's on Hollingsworth

MayFaire Babies

MayFaire Swan

Ruddy

Key West Silver

Key West Cookie Company

Shelley & Sweet Pea

JP & Taz

Tommy Boy

I know that Dawn (Sweetblood22) likes doing art and also photography....what do the rest of you like or do for fun or profit.

Best,
John

    Floored.
John, I hope you're readying an entry for the National Duck Stamp competition. What a gift you have--hard to pick a favorite, but those herons are wonderful.

    Federal Duck Stamp Contest
Originally, the stamp competitions were one of my goals.. I did enter a few local state compitions several years ago.

Might look into doing some of those again... competition is pretty fierce in some, especially the Federal.

The National Parks has some great compitions as well, also Leigh Yawkey Birds in Art.

I had planned on entering that Night Heron piece for a cover design for a Florida Wildlife Magazine, but they scrapped the contest and never brought it back again.

If you notice the positioning for that one, you can see where there's space between both birds for the spline, and room for the title over the mature bird.

Stacey, the Garden looks like watercolor (nice)... I dabbled in that media some. But it's a lot less forgiving than Acyrlic for me.

    For some reason.........
I've started running (jogging) to be in a 5k. Daughter is a Dr. of Physical Therapy in Jacksonville Beach, and has convinced me that after she ran a Half Marathon in Key West, then I surely would be able to do a 5k. I'm into week two of a program known as "Couch to 5k"......and it's not killing me "YET". Gonna do my best to make it through the 9 week program. Other than taking out the little Whaler for Bream and Sac-La-Lait, and playing golf at least twice a week, it's keeping me active.

Well done sir! While, from examples presented, I suspect your affinity is for wildlife and animals in general, there is nothing wrong at all with the others either. I am especially entranced by the dual smiles in Shelley and Sweet Pea, and the open innocence of Tommy Boy.

    Wow.

Take care, John, and keep it up!

    WOW!
I'm truely thankful that I mentioned what I do, because it has started something new and
Different here in the forum. We have some very tallented people in our midst...Wow John
Your artwork is exceptional I'm glad you started the post. Once I figure out how to upload
A picture I might find somthing I have framed for someone and show it. I have a computerized
mat cutting machine, so I first design the mat on the computer then it cuts it out on the
Machine, any shape, size, letter or style . The possibilitys are endless thats what makes it so
Different from regular store bought mats and frames which are standard and basic.

Keep up the good work, it takes our minds of our side effects.

Side effects.....we have side effects, wow I forgot, this thread took my mind of them.

    God bless,

    Running....
Like MarineE5 I'm sure, I use to run a lot.

I also did several 5K, 10K and 15K most while in the Marines, a few after. Biggest event I ever ran in was the Around the Island Relay Race on Oahu. It was 135 mile relay race an I was on a mixed (men/women) Marine Team. We did get a trophy but we weren't anywhere close to the Open Men's Team...the Marines and a local team blew us away.

I mainly played local state competitive racketball (both three wall and four wall) for many years.

Unfortunately between many years or both of those my knees are pretty shot these days... I've had two arthroscopic knee surgeries, bone chips and torn meniscus.

So it's mainly bike riding and a lot of fishing, LOL....

You can do it Larry, running is a lot of mind over matter... Usually once you have been running for awhile, you can run much further than you realize. Your mind tends to be the one that sets your limits based from your goals and previous runs. Get past that and you can run much further.

John, forst of all your art is great. I collect life sized decoys most are from Ducks Unlimited, some are from local carvers back east, my best and favorite is a handcrafted working decoy from the late 30's found it in my ex's grandfathers barn. Can you tell me how to add links like you did with your art?

    Nice Subject
    Skiffin/John,

Nice thread and you entered a 135 mile race? Geez...Unfortunately, I was never a real big fan of running. Yes, I did it in the Marines as required and when I was in Vietnam, I think I could have given Jesse Owens a run for his money : ). I did do cycling for many years just for exercise.

While in the Marines, I learned and continued Ju-Jitsu, reached 4th Degree Black Belt, taught for several years and had a School. Retired from that as the ground hasn't gotten any softer over the years : )

Genealogy has gotten a hold of me as I didn't know allot about my parent's ancestors. When I asked my Dad, his answer was " They are all dead, that's all you need to know". Not much of an answer or help. With the Irish, that could mean that he wasn't talking to his family or they were really dead. I have learned allot since starting this 14 years ago. Met many cousins via the internet and traveled to their countries as well. Memories that will last forever......

Nice art work there John. It always amazes me what people can do. I always look at people as a Book and each person has a story to tell....

    Family Name Histories
Proir to me being dx in November, I had just come of Holland America Cruise Lines
I got a contract to go on and do seminars about your Family Names. Where it origanated,
What it means, notable people, the Coat of Arms and when it settled in the USA.
I bought into this company (Historcal Research Center) so I could use their database. It has
Over 1 million name histories. The Cruise line let me put a Medieval display in the gift shop and sell
To the guests. (With my frame work and custom matting the display looked awsome). Everything
Was pre-sold so when I came home I could make it and then ship it to the guest. I was supposed
to go on more cruises in Dec and one or two cruises a month starting Jan 2012 but I let them
know about my ailment and they said it will put me on hold until I am well enough to
    Travel again.
Once I figure out how to link pictures like john did I will post some.

    God bless,

    Running and Activities
Go for it Larry, it's great that your daughter a ran a half marathon, and that she has motivated you to start running too. I love running, and have been doing it for a very long time, although a lot slower these days. I ran a half marathon four years after surgery, and a marathon five years after, both with my PEG in full effect; it was a hoot. I think that the more you run, the more you will like it. You may even find that, after awhile, you have a bit more spring in your step on the golf course.
Besides running I like hiking, backpacking, camping, weight lifting, biking, kayaking, surfing (took awhile to figure out how to surf with a PEG tube), photography, and reading.
