my moms cancer

so my mom is in a lot of pain and cannot walk anymore and they had her go through MRI and a CT scan which showed that she had a tumor a size of a golf ball on her kidney and not only that she also has a growth on her bone which how they put it "the tumor is attacking the bone" she is scheduled to see a eurologist and be scheduled for a biopsy. i just wanna know what it all means because they say they not sure its cancer but at the same time they say they have to find out what exactly it is. can anyone please explain all this to me?

    Kidney Cancer
Please take my thoughts with a grain of salt as they are no substitute for a medical diagnosis. A tumor the size of a golfball on the kidney is usually Cancer, but is small enough that the surgical removal of the Kidney and tumor usually turns out well. Mine was of a similar size 9 and 1/2 years ago and I am doing fine (ie 4.2cm.). A tumor attached to the bone could be something to be concerned with and you will have to discuss that with the doctor.

Sorrry I can not Answer your question
A 6cm tumor on the Kidney is still small enough that a good recovery is not only possible, but likely, From the little I know bone cancer is not related to Kidney Cancer. Kidney Cancer if it spreads goes to the lymph nodes, lungs and bladder. At 6cm it is a little small to have spread. The mass on the bone may not be related to the Kidney surgery. Again you are going to have to get answers to that question from the doctors.

thank you so much. i was not
thank you so much. i was not aware that the kidney cancer couldn't spread to bone. she has an appointment set up for the 4th. and i am just baffled at how long this is taking. her MRI was done the 21st of dec. her CT scan was done just yesterday. everything is so far apart. i have read a few stories and some people went from MRI to surgery within a week!! i am just afraid they are taking too long to do all this.

    Hello
and I am so sorry you and your mother are going through this. I would suggest reading many of the posts here - to help give you some background on kidney cancer. I would also suggest that you join
KIDNEY-ONC@LISTSERV.ACOR.ORG. This is an email support group of kidney cancer patients and caregivers who are amazingly knowledgeable and can provide recommendations for specialists in your area, clinical trials that may be available, etc.

Bottom line, deep breath - and take it one step at a time. You didnt mention how old your mother is - and what is the cause of her pain (related to this or ... something else?). Her primary care doctor should be included as he/she should be managing her pain initially. Then the biopsy - after which you'll know what you're dealing with. As you read posts here, start writing down questions to ask the urologist - like, if this is cancer and she needs surgery, can she have a partial nephrectomy? Can it be done laparoscopically?

Unfortunately renal cell carcinoma can metastasize most everywhere. Most common areas are lung, brain, and liver but it can go the bone and other organs as well. However, there are many new drugs and treatments available today and many clinical trials that show great promise in treating RCC.

Please know that we're here to listen and provide support in any way we can. And - also send prayers your way.

I am very sorry to hear about your mom. Please know that both of you are in our thoughts and prayers. Most of us are either survivors or caregivers so we know exactly how you are feeling. Stay positive. RCC is a fight that can be won.

Kidney Cancer and mets to the bones
Of course, we are not doctors here and cannot be certain of anything when it comes to things like this, but if they said the tumor is "attacking the bones," then it is possible that kidney cancer has spread to the bones. And yes, according to my urologist, kidney cancer can spread to the bones. He told me that the lungs and the bones are often the first places it spreads to. I think, though, that the terminology is unusual. I've only heard of CT results that indicate kidney cancer as showing a "mass" and not a "tumor." Again, I could be wrong. But let's hope for the best, which of course would be a biopsy showing a benign tumor. Please keep us informed.
    Regards,

    May be unrelated...
    tatyana1986,

It is also possible that the bone and kidney issues are unrelated and if so different treatment options may apply to each. I think the docs need to sort this one out.

    hello everyone
its been a week and still nothing done, no biopsy no tests no nothing.. she had an appointment with a urologist who was suppose to send her for biopsy who just looked at the papers and sent her away to another doctor which the appointment is for the 11th. i find it very dissapointing in how the doctors are handling this. its very nauseating that doctors wont do what they are suppose to do.and when you find a specialist you want to go to the primary doctor doesnt want to give her a referral to that doc! i dont know what to do and where to turn to speed up the process and get it sorted out and taken care of before it is too late! sorry i just had to vent. thank you for listening.

    Hurry up and wait
Most of us know how you feel. I have worked in health care for 35 years and know how to work the system. My local oncologist told me in Oct. that I had maybe as little as 6 months to live. I pulled strings and it still took me another month before I got to see the oncologist that I wanted. Probably another 3 weeks before my first treatment. Frustrating and nerve racking. I don't know how most people with no experience in the field keep from going insane. Just keep calling and being your mothers advocate. I called several times a week and told them that my car was idling and I could come right down if there was an open appointment or cancellation
