day after prostatectomy - help!

My husband had his prostatectomy yesterday - robotic - and it went well, but last night his pain increased greatly, he could not get up and walk because of fainting (low blood pressure)and he is in a great deal of pain. He is told that the pain is from the gas, his morphine has been doubled, and he cannot take deep breaths. Is this to be expected? I cannot be with him at the hospital and am very concerned that something important could be overlooked because he is alone and probably not communicating well because of the drugs. He has the puffers on his legs, it's a highly rated hospital and I've been comfortable with the quality of the people there, but am asking - have any of you had this experience? Other than the cancer, this is a very healthy, very strong man.

The evening after I had my robotic prostatectomy I also had severe pain. It was worse then I had read about from others. They did increase my pain meds that evening. My wife spent the night with me in the room at the hospital. If he can get up and walk even short distances with help it should help him.

I just had robotic prostatectomy sept.19th at OSU James Cancer Center,I had a lot of pain also from the gas, and the pain meds did not seem to help much, the staff told me that the meds will not help much with the gas pain,as soon as he starts passing the gas the pain will come down 1 to 2 days, i had more pain in my lower back,(major back problems) it took a couple of days for the back pain to come down also, the puffers are to prevent blood clots, they are needed, i also could not take deep breaths also,it felt like my lungs would not expand enough, it was from the surgery,
plus the morphine can cause shortness of breath nothing to worry about, robotic surgery is a major surgery and it takes some time to recovery, the first couple of days are pretty rough but he will be fine, i hope this helps he will feel a little better each day, i just got my pathology reports back wednesday 10/19 and every thing came back negative, YES, in 2 months 12/19 i need to have another psa test done and if it is .001 or below i will be cancer free, i hope the best for your husbands recovery and your future together, GOD BLESS

Thank you for your information - I did not get to read it until today because so much has happened. My husband is home, cath removed, pain gone (discomfort present but no pain) and his path report was good - confined to prostate. I think that it was the gas that was so painful, then the bowel problems that followed making him feel so crummy, but he had excellent care and a very responsive surgeon, so we are now on the other side of it. I'm so glad that yours went well also, and hope that future tests are good. I was just so worried because I could not stay with him. Thank you again.

Walking did help a lot - it was just getting the pain under control so that he was able. I just wanted to be sure that there wasn't an issue I was unaware of. I was scared. He's doing the stairs at home now, and is much, much improved. Thank you.

I am glad to know about the success. "Contained" is the best one could get from the path report. Hope your husband recovers the soonest and you can "turn the page" of this chapter in your life.

    Wishing you the best.
