The Mushroom Wars

Am convinced that AHCC (a proprietary blend of Shitake and other mushrooms used in Japanese hospitals to bolster the immune system and minimize the effects of chemo) was one of the supplements that helped me to sail through six rounds of chemo with no side effects other than lost hair.

But much recent research touts the benefits of Maitake Fraction MD as superior in stimulating our "Killer-T" white cells, which attack and suppress cancer.

Other research shows Coriolus mushrooms to be the ones most rigorously tested on human beings (not merely in vitro), with impressive results.

And (yet more confusing), a few colleagues at work, recovering from cancer, whip out their supplements of reishi mushrooms, professing THEIR superiority to all others.

While eating any of these mushrooms is good for us, does anyone have information from a good source on which of these might be best for us?

Thanks,
Rosey

    I doubt...
...that you will find an answer as there are so many people out there touting their way as the best.

I have so many friends who have had no side effects from chemo and they did/took nothing.

There never will be a definitive answer, in my humble opinion.

    Morning,
After googling- mushrooms radiation cancer- these are a few of the things that came up-

…Casadevall and his colleagues, however, have a theory. Based on experiments with three different types of fungi, they believe the melanin-containing breeds absorb the high levels of energy in ionizing radiation and somehow turn it into a biologically useful (and benign) form, akin to a dark and dangerous version of photosynthesis. "We were able to see significant growth of the black ones relative to the white ones in a radiation field," he says. "That is the observation. How you interpret it … is where the interesting speculations come in."…
They are talking about mushrooms that are dark and their ability to process radiaition from harmful to benign. RADIATION EATERS: New research may show that fungi with melanin—the protective pigment in human skin—thrive in the presence of ionizing radiation.

As always, draw your own conclusions.

reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) contains carbohydrates, fiber, amino acids, protein, steroids, triterpenes, lipids, alkaloids, polysaccharides, glucoside, coumarin glycoside, volatile oil, vitamin B2 (riboflavin), and ascorbic acid. It also contains the minerals calcium, zinc, magnesium, copper, and germanium. Additionally, reishi contains ganoderic acid, which is a free-radical scavenger, giving reishi antioxidant powers. The polysaccharides in reishi mushrooms appear to activate a type of white blood cell known as a macrophage. These cells filter the blood, destroying cancer cells, viruses, bacteria, and other large particulate material. Macrophages also signal other white blood cells to seek out and destroy tumor cells.

One study showed that reishi strongly inhibited the growth of sarcoma 180, with an inhibition rate of 95.6 to 98.6 percent at an interperitonial dosage of 20 mg/kg for ten days in mice.116 Another study demonstrated that reishi polysaccharides significantly inhibited the proliferation of JTC-26 tumor cells, a human cancer-cell strain. Ganodermic acids U through Z, which are six types of cytotoxic triterpenes found in reishi, showed significant cytotox-icity on hepatoma cells grown in vitro.

Medicinal Mushrooms: Especially maitake, reishi, shiitake and turkey tail mushrooms. Maitake D- fraction has been shown to enhance the effects of chemotherapy as well as having anticancer and immune strengthening properties. New research shows maitake D-fraction also has apoptosis (cancer cell death) inducing properties. Planetary formulas Maitake Mushroom and reishi Mushroom Supreme have shown themselves to be very efficacious.

Immune tonics such as reishi mushroom and astragalus can be given in higher dosage during the early stages of disease or to prevent recurrence. In the more advanced stages, tonics are also used but to a lesser extent, with greater emphasis on the use of eliminative, heat clearing herbs. In the middle stages of cancer one combines tonification and elimination substances equally.
