Alpha Male

Men don’t like to ask for help because we feel it is a show of weakness or not being in control. It is a man's thing of trying to always be the Alpha male; you know the biggest and greatest.

But having cancer sure puts a damper on any Alpha male thing, and it showed us that as humans we all need one another in order to survive. When I would get Depressed and crying I would always hid it because I did not want anyone seeing me weak, but all it did was to bring me into a deeper form of depression and kept me there longer each time. Now when I feel it coming on I let my caregiver wife know so she can be there for me and help me get out of it as quick as possible.

Knowing and understanding my depression is a key in my ability to stay healthy. It also shows me how much I need others in my life who care enough and took the time to be there for me when I need them the most.

CSN has been a way for me to share with others and to also get help through the many depressed times in my life that would have otherwise killed me. I am here today and stronger because someone else cared enough to take the time to say hi and to share part of there life. No more alpha male for me just little old me under dog hondo from now on.

Thanks to all of you my many friends
Hondo

You my friend seem a little melancholy today in your postings.....

I think the alpha male syndrome you refer goes back to the "Hunter, Gatherer" days.

You have just figured out that you can still be the top dog (even though you may not realize it), you just don't have to flaunt it....

    Knowledge and experience is power......

    Best,

    Hi John
Yep it helps me out of my depression modes at times and keeps me from becoming bipolar. lol

Top Dog, me and the Pit-Bull was having a dragging contest the other night with a rope and she won leaving me with burn marks. I can’t even beat an old dog, but then thinking fast so I can recover my alpha male superiority. I went to the cover and got a Mike Bone treat out, held it up in the air, and here she comes rope and all. With her big brown eyes looking up at me, she put the rope on my feet as if to say. I am sorry for betting the crap out of you daddy but I will let you have the rope for that Scooby Doo doggie treat.

Ha I said; now you know who the master is, so I gave her the treat. Only to find Her, the Treat, and the Rope all gone.

I can’t even beat or out smart a 10 year old dog, but sure have a lot of fun trying..

    Thanks my friend

    Take care
It sounds to me like you got it "sussed," as they say the other side of the Pond. Knowing what it is seems to me to be half the battle. I've been very lucky and not had to deal with depression much. My treatment hasn't been without incident, but so far so good; the only time I really had depression was for a short stint after I kicked the pain meds, so it was sorta chemically induced.

It's wonderful that you have someone to go to when you feel it coming on. And of course you've got the fantastic peeps on this board.

    Be well.

You are still a "Big Dog" in my book. If you ever get depressed you know we are all here to make you laugh and maybe even cry, but we'll help get you 'up' again. You are a great inspiration to all of us. Keep posting and keep being positive.

    Alpha Diggity Dog
Hi Hondo, it's humility, compassion, and understanding. Alpha Dog is an illusion. As John said, in 10,000 B.C. it was applicable. But I'm not sure it was all that even then. Gorillas follow the leader who can lead them to the ripening food, not the biggest and baddest. "Alpha Male" is just another contemporary catch phrase that reflects something meaningful, and a lot that is not.

    Hi Debbie

When we can’t do anything and the pain and depression is so great I am glad that through it all we still find time to laugh or bring a smile to someone.
