Biopsy Results In..... Need Your Help....PLEASE!

I don't know what to make of this news and need you all real REAL bad. I really need your honest opinions.

Peliminary results (still a few more tests to be performed) show this tumor in left lung to be a "New Primary" ... Not same characters as mCRC. So now I have lung cancer too??? Right away I think..well...cut it out before it spreads.... before IT gets to a stage IV. What stage is this anyway? Doc says since I have activity in other lung that has yet to be identified that surgery is out. I could have lung cancer in one lung and mCRC met in other lung.

He said best option now is to proceed with the Cyberknife AS PLANNED. Regardless of what type of cancer it is. Cyberknife will take out whatever. ok..makes sense. But this raises several questions. Like.... If this is NOT mCRC then why has my CEA been on a constant rise? Is there a marker for lung cancer like colon cancer... I mean like CEA? How do they measure lung cancer???? Is this why Folfiri stopped working? Is this why Vectibix not working? Man... I am at a loss here. I'm just gonna go cry. This so friggin sucks. Dammit

    I've been in the research mode and was a well-oiled machine when I heard your cry for help. Here is what I've come up with so far. Take the cyberknife as planned - sounds good.

    I found these tumor markers used for certain lung cancers. It's a whole can of worms, but these look to be tests that can be ran on your behalf.

    "highly elevated concentrations of CEA, CYFRA 21-1, NSE, SCCA, and ProGRP are suggestive of malignancy"

    HERE ARE THE POSSIBLE TESTS REGARDING THE TYPES OF LUNG CANCER:

    CEA = CEA is also used as a marker for other forms of cancer such as lung cancer.
    (lung cancer causes rise in CEA - may be why yours is climbing and not be a mCRC)

    CYFFRA 21-1 = Tumor Marker for Follow-up of Patients with Squamous Cell Carcinoma

    NSE = Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is a substance that has been detected in patients with certain tumors,such as small cell lung cancer.

    SCCA = small cell lung cancer, tumor markers

    ProGRP = Progastrin-releasing peptide (ProGRP) is a recently identified biomarker of small cell lung cancer

    This will get you off and running...all I could come up with right now...

    So very sorry to hear this news. I see that Craig has already replied regarding markers. I was surprised to find that CEA is a marker for many of the cancers, not just CRC.

    As far as the chemo is concerned, what I found was the following:
    The drugs purposely employed for lung cancer are; Carboplatin and Taxol, germicitabine with cisplatin, vinorelbine and cisplatin.

    Most sites I checked didn't give the drugs, but were encouraging that there are new things on the market.

    Glad to hear that the doc feels proceeding with cyberknife is still good. Regardless of what cancer it is, out of you is the best thing.

    Feel so sorry but can't help you , it's really first time I hear
    something like this but if it's a primary cancer y wool remove it asap, I agree!

    I have wrote down info you gave me on blood tests and possible treatments. I see my Onc in about 90 minutes. I will go over this info with him and get his take on this news as I have yet to discuss it with him. Thanks for your speedy replies. Will update when I get back from Onc.

    ...Jennie, got some more info, but will wait until we can see if it is primary lung cancer- and if it is, what type of lung cancer it is.

    I'm just hoping with all my heart that it is not SCLC, small cell lung cancer.

    Have you been hoarse lately at all? I know you were having a cough for quite a spell, but wrote it off as radiation pneumonia...maybe this was a part of that and they misidagnosed it.

    Worried for you......standing by waiting to hear.

    I didn't get a chance to see you post until after you were on the way for your onc appointment, fingers, toes, everything else crossed that you find you can get surgery, or that the different chemo's will make the difference (since lung and colon chemos are different)thinking of you, waiting to hear from you.

    A couple of thoughts:
    1. Can you take the time to get a second opinion before making treatment decisions? Your case sounds really complicated.

    2. A new drug was just approved for a subset of lung cancer patients who have a mutated ALK gene. The drug is Xalkori (crizotinib is the generic name). So make sure the tumor is tested for that.

    This really sucks for you, I am sorry and hope that your doctor appointment goes well.

    This is just awful news. I'm hoping that you get some good answers from you doctor today and can find the best option for you to go forward with. It's a good thing they are going ahead with the procedure as stated to just get it out. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
