stage 4 lung cancer treatment stopped

My husband has stage 4 lung cancer and has 30 radiation treatments and numerous chemo sessions. At the last oncologist visit I asked the doc if she thought the chemo was working she said yes hes stable, now I read the reports it said the first rib area was worse and the one in his adrenal gland had shrunk one way and grew another so I would not call that stable myself. He had been saying strange things and seeing things that are not there and it just kept getting worse until one night he did not sleep he was restless all night which I thought was due to not sleeping the last two days and night.I took him to ER and they said he had a mild heart attack and put in one tent. Now he was to have chemo again but after the heart issue the oncologist has stopped chemo all together and handed him over to hospice all because they if you have any other medical conditions they he cant have treatment and given him 6 months to live is this how it is just give up on the patient? Please any advise would be appreciated.

    Hi Sunshine

My father has stage 4 lung cancer that has spread to his lower stomach. He was just released from the hospital for having fluid around the heart. They took out the fluid and stopped his chemo. He coughs so much that they can't even complete a MRI. We don't know what our next options are. We also feel like we were left for him to just die.

    This Sound So Familiar
    Hi There.

I'm new to this but my Dad also was diagnosed with Stage IV Small Cell Lung Cancer. The oncologist said he thought he got all of the lung cancer about a week ago, but it has now metastasized to his brain and abdomen. His stomach is hard as rock and they are giving him morphine for pain.

I too feel like we were left in the dust because now the doctors is asking whether we want to continue the chemo therapy or just let him die. It is the hardest decision. If the chemo won't really help him what are we supposed to do?

    Difficult decisions...
    TeeDee66,
I am so sorry to read that your father is going through this, as well as your entire family. Perhaps you could ask his doctor if the chemo would be palliative treatment, to make him more comfortable, or if he/she thinks that it could actually help in reducing tumors or masses.

Such difficult decisions, such difficult times. Also, ask about hospice. Hospice can be so helpful to your father as well as all of you. Whether these are his last days, or whether this is a very "big bump in the road", hospice can be there.

What does your father wish for as far as a decision on chemo? With the administration of morphine, is he able to express what his wishes are? I know, dear one, so many questions, so much to think about, and all the while hurting about this scary time.

You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

    Difficult Decision Made
    Luz Del Lago,

Thanks for the prayer and the kind thoughts. Right after I logged offline, I got a call from the hospital. It's 10 mins away from my home. I got there and in 45 mins my Dad died tonight at 10:30 p.m. It's truly unbelievable that it happened so fast. I loved him so much. He's no longer in pain and lived to 83. I wish he had made it to 5/24 which was was birthday, but at least now, he's no longer in pain.

I have so many thoughts going through my head right now...I need some sleep and for this nightmare to be over.
