Port pain sensations?

Is it normal to feel the port so strongly? I can feel the tubes and everything and it just seems so odd. I wonder if there is a problem with mine?

Beth, do you mean you feel it like pain or do you mean you can feel it through your skin with your fingers? My port really sticks out of my chest and even the line is visible, and the three little dots stick out also. I tend to play with it at times, but only when I'm alone, I hope LOL.. I am very aware most times that it is there. Especially for 3 or 4 days after access. I go tomorrow for a flushing and so will be sore and brused for a little time.

Give yourself time. It's only been in a little over a week. My doctor wouldn't even allow access until mine had been in a week.

    Sounds like mine
I mean I can feel it through the skin. It sticks way out of my chest and yes sometimes I can see the lines and of course the 3 dots. It's still sore and just looks so odd sticking out like it does. The bruising is still visible but getting better.

At this point I don't like it, but I don't remember feeling anything when they took out the needle when I finished the chemo last wednesday...of course I was trying not to puke at the time. :)

The real test will be when I have it accessed for the first time. I have to go for labwork next wednesday, I wonder if I'll feel comfortable letting her do it from there.
I smiled and grabbed my port just about the time I read that you play with yours LOL.

Just your description helps ease my mind. Thanks

    Porties
    Hey Beth,

Maybe I can get my husband to take a picture and I'll post it for you. It does show in pictures if I'm wearing a low neckline top.

Find out if your Onc numbs the port area, like at the dentist. If not have him write a script for emla cream. You rub it on 1 hour prior to the port being accessed and cover with saran wrap. Both my Onc and Out Patient Oncology inject a numbing agent. My Specialist at UCSF uses nothing so I could use the EMLA but just choose not to let them access and have them take blood from my hand.

I've never been accessed with out something. I just think it would really hurt as the access needles are pretty large.

If I can get used to it so can you. I'm the original princess and the pea.

    Good luck,
    Leslie

    Beth,
When I first got the port back in June it was swollen all around it.I could not even see the 3 dots and could barely even feel them. When I finally could feel them I thought something was wrong. As time went on the swelling went down and it became more visable. After a few months the lines and 3 dots really stood out and still do. Sometimes it feels as though it has grown bigger over time.
Oh,Leslie I play with mine too when nobody is around(wink)!!! The power port that is.:) John(FNHL-1-4A-5/10)

I have caught myself referring to it as my third nipple. LOL

What's going to be interesting to me is when they are ready to do the transplant and I have to get another one put in but that will have 3 lines hanging out of my chest. Dr that put this one in says he could put it in the same side or other side it didn't matter.

Just won't be any way to get comfortable it sounds.

Oh well, it is what it is

John, as usual you made me laugh, thought I would choke. You must be terrific at parties, but somehow I also think you may be shy. My husband crakes lots of jokes with people he knows well but otherwise is on the quite side.

    Sounds Uncomfortable
Beth, does sound uncomfortable. Would you have enough room to have them both on the same side? And you are so right, it is what it is.
    Have a good night,

    SHY???
    Leslie,
No,I am not shy at all. As a matter of fact I am the kind of person that says exactly whats on their mind. If I know someone well then I can rattle off some jokes. If I do not know someone I will sit back and watch and listen. It doesn't take long to figure them out. People tell you so much about their selves when they talk . Let them talk for a few minutes and they will tell you all you need to know about them and they will not even realize it. Someone taught me that a long time ago you can never learn anything if you are doing the talking. Maybe thats why your husband is quiet, he's listening and watching. John

    Hi Beth,
Funny story..about a week after my port was put in Steve rolled over in bed and slid his hands all over my back(like he was looking for something)..he rubbed both of my shoulder blades, then he said "I feel your boobs, but where's the port"? Needless to say..he didn't get "any" that night...ha! He thought that was sooo funny. I'm small chested (obviously) and he loves to tease me....Sue

    LOL
How funny. Jim' so afraid of hurting me at this point, still looks pretty sore. Plus he has tremors and his hands shake. I had to take his hand to let him touch it. His first comment? It's so hard, doesn't that hurt? YES

I am really sluggish tonight, or really the last 2 days. I am really tired. I tried picking up the house a little.....ALL Sam's toys (can't play with one at a time) just that by itself is exhausting. Vacuumed, talked to my sister on the phone, now ready for a nap.

Got the majic mouth wash last night and it does help that's for sure. Although I do wish the effect lasted longer.

    Take Care,
    Beth
