Extension of NJ Temp Disability Benefits

I don't know anything about the NJ State benefits but I do know that you do not have to be out of work for a year to get SS Disability. The Financial Assistance department at the hospital where I was treated filed for me online and I was approved almost immediately. This was in June '09 and I received my first check in January '10. Please check with your local Social Security department, they may be able to help you fill this out and get you approved quicker.

Well, that doesn't sound right to me either about being out a year. I am in Pennsylvania but why would states differ because isn't disability federal? Also, head and neck cancers depending on stage and any metasitis are approved faster under the compassionate allowance. I think I put a thread we had discussing this under the HNC Superthread, towards the end, I think, under the "What if I cannot work?" section. The Superthread should be on the first page of this board. I'm trying to think if I was our a year when I applied. I had purchased disability insurance thru work with UNUUM and was found permanently disabled when they review my case after a few months. They are the ones that actually suggested I should apply, and then they have a company, GENEX that did all the application for me. I was approved very quickly. Genex's service was free. Only thing is all the back pay I got from soc sec I had to give back to UNUUM.

If for some reason he isn't approved, you can get an attorney to appeal it and apply for you again. My step mom had to do that. They will take a fee when you are approved. Good luck.

my questions does not really relate to ths NJ Disability Benefits but wondered

1) where in NJ are you and where you go for cancer treatment?
2) sweets where in PA are you? and where do you go for cancer treatment?

I only ask as I am coming to the realization that I may not be happy in Texas anymore and while it may take time say a year at minimum until after I am cancer free for a year, and then time to sell my house and find a new job, etc. I am discerning if I should move back up to the northeast to be closer to my family and college roommate. It will take time but I am just finding that living so far from my sisters, nieces and most specifically my college roommate and her family who have been so supportive of me during this difficult time I may consider a move back up north. One of my biggest concerns of course is financial situation. As one I would need to find a new job, place to live where I could keep my dog and cats. And then the most important access to good cancer treatment. Of course there is always the option of flying back and forth to Houston to MD Anderson like many of their patients do.

I would like to find out what happens with SSD and what happens with disability insurance when you cannot work, etc.

Where am I?
I am in the middle of no where, then hang a left past the corn field and go another 20 miles further into the boondocks.

I moved here in 1990 from NYC. I am about 25-30 miles away from Williamsport PA. 'Home of the Little Leauge World Series'. I am in Moreland Township, Lycoming County. A lot of farms and some dairy farms left. It's beautiful, quiet countryside, green rolling hills by the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. My parents have a 140 acre farm. My step mom loves animals and has a kitty cottage full of rescued cats, bunnies, have miniature horses, a pony and a baby cross between the two, geese, ducks, emu, ferret, canaries, finches, quail, all kinds of birds, and a fish tank. There are five people living in two houses and we have six dogs. Lol.

My hospital is Geisinger Danville. I am happy with my doctors there. My whole team was there. ENT, gastro, dentist, RO, nutrition team, all on my tumor board there when I had it. My RO, Dr Omar Yuman, and my ENT Dr Philip K Pelliteri were recognized on a best physicians in the US and Geisinger was on the list for US News best hospitals. It's a good hospital, I think. Life Flight also lands there if some one needs a helicopter for trauma.

Thanks everyone. Yes SS Disability is Federal; however you have to wait 6 months before you receive your first check. The NJ Temp Disability you get paid after a oouple of weeks. I'll have to talk to his doc to see how much longer they expect him to be out.

Disability
Social Security considers head and neck cancer to be a "fast track" cancer; approval can be given in about a month. Payment begins one month after you're approved. The social worker at the hospital can initiate the process. You can also contact a Social Security Disability lawyer - they'll do all the work for you. This can be done over the phone and usually they don't charge a fee (paid by Social Security). If your husband has private disability insurance from his employer, begin the paper work now. Many policies have a 3 month wait period from the disability date. In both cases, speak to the social worker at the hospital.
