"Does selenium prevent cancer? It may depend on which form people take

"Scientists are reporting that the controversy surrounding whether selenium can fight cancer in humans might come down to which form of the essential micronutrient people take. Its turns out not all seleniums are the same--the researchers found that one type of selenium supplement may produce a possible cancer-preventing substance more effeciently than another form of selenium in human cancer cells. Their study appears in the ACS' journal "Biochemistry".

"Hugh Harris and collegaues note that although the Nutritional Prevention of Cancer clinical trial showed that selenium reduced the risk of cancer, a later study called the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial did not show a benefit. A major difference between the trials was the form of selenium that was used. To find out whether different types of selenium have different chemopreventive properties, the researchers studied how two forms--SeMet and MeSeCys--are processed in human lung cancer cells.

"The researchers found that MeSeCys killed more lung cancer cells than SeMet did. Also, lung cancer cells treated with MeSeCys processed the selenium differently than the cells treated with SeMet. They say that these findings could explain why studies on the health benefits of selenium sometimes have conflicting results.

"The authors acknowledge funding from the Australian Research Council."

I know it deals with lung and not CRC but........maybe something to still think about

PS: The "ACS" refered to in article is the American Chemical Society, not the American Cancer Society......

    interesting
Very interesting- thanks for sharing the info! I want to go check my selenium to see if I can tell what form it is. I have two different bottles of selenium- one is tablets and the other are capsules. Wonder if that has anything to do with effectiveness of it and/or absorption of it as well. Hmmm..

I'm not supplementing selenium. I'm taking so much stuff right now, i'm trying to be real selective about what i take. We need to be careful about things counteracting each other, too. There's just so much to know. When i can afford it, i'm going to take an herbology course so i can understand all this stuff.

Thanks for the info, the more we know, the better.

    Hugs,
    Krista

Try to get as much of what nutrients you need via food rather
than pill. I ate so poorly and took so many pills to compensate that it probably nourished my tumor back then....Unfortunately for me, alot of whats supposed to be beneficial I can't stand the taste of, like salmon, mango, papaya tho I find myself now popping blueberries into my mouth instead of M&Ms and munching on broccoli instead of Snickers, etc.....Live and learn

    Interestingly enough....
My husband has just been diagnosed with Stage I prostate cancer and his oncologist told him to ensure he does not take any supplements that contain selenium as it speeds up the cancer. Maybe it just affects prostate cancer.

    I checked
I checked my selenium bottles- both for the capsules and tablets. Neither one of them mentioned anything like the forms of selenium you mentioned. So I guess there is no way to tell what form they are.

Me neither, Lisa...knew there were diff types of VitA,D or E for
example but never selenium (or a bunch of others now that I think about it)Still have my old bottles-the selenium says "as selenium yeast" whatever that means. How effective? I don't know. Since I've started reading to try to help myself, sometimes only confusion results....

    I would.
I got the impression that selenium affects prostate cancer or the prostate. There are so many sides to every issue anymore that I can't keep track of what is what. Drives me nuts and I don't need any assistance in that area.
