phantom urges to pee

in Bladder Cancer #1
hi..my mom just went through bladder cancer surgery and just came out of hospital for second time with MRSA i am her care giver...she has just started a new thing yesterday where she feels she still has to go pee and sits on toilet even though she has a stuma and bag....now.....has anyone ever heard of this??? i do not know what to do?? we just got home from hospital today she had her surgery on the 10th of january...

    I had my bladder removed on June 30 in 2010 and yes, I have experienced the urge to pee even though I have a stoma. Can't explain it and it really isn't a real hard urge, simply a slight urge and then it goes away. 'Phantom urge' is probably a very good way to explain it.

    I wish your mom well in her recovery and you as well as her caregiver. Time makes a big difference and I can only encourage you both to hang in there,....it will get better. I know your mom and myself would like to be like we were prior to our surgery, but we must remember it is a 'life saving surgery', so that kinda speaks for itself. So, with that said, once again I wish you all well.

    Ty so much for replying to my question, mom still has the urge to pp and still sits on the potty...i am glad to hear she is not the only one that does this and this is normal so to speak...i am sure it is very hard to explain...my mom cannot explain it either...

    I am glad to read you are now cancer free....my moms surgeon believes my mom also to be cancer free now...she went through chemo before her surgery....to shrink tumor so it could be removed and doc says no more treatment is needed...she is having a tough road to recover...she is 76 yrs old and and has been having confusion problems since her surgery...its been a very difficult road for us so far...i am praying in time it will get better she is pyhsicaly improving but mentally there are some issues...

    Hi Kaulie:

    Sorry to hear about your mom's mental confusion. I have heard of that happening I believe mainly due to the anesthesia, but not sure. Anyway, I will pray for her complete recovery and strengh for you and your family as well.

    Urgency
    I had a radical cystectomy in 2007 and also have the ileal coduit. I have the feeling of the need to urinate every once in a while. The first year was the worst. It takes about a year for the nerves to realize you no longer have a bladder. It drove me mad somedays as I really felt like I needed to urinate. It is now much, much better and I seldom have those feelings. It is perfectly normal after a radical cystecomy.
