Peg Tube removal

in Head and Neck Cancer #1

After 10 long months, I have just received the word that I can have my PEG tube removed! Happy Day! 

The doctors office was pretty vague about the procedure. Does anyone have any words of wisdom or hints or tips that I should be aware of before hand?

    My Tube

    There may be different types but the one I had I believe had a disc on the iside to keep it from

    coming out which was part of the unit.

    Rubber like I'm guessing so it would flex and collapse and come out under pulling pressure.

    When it is time to remove the doc had me lay on a table and he put one hand on my stomach and pulled on the tube till it popped out.

    My tube took quite a lot of pull pressure to get it out.

    I felt pressure on my insides till it popped out.

    Then it was a pretty sharp sort of burning pain for about 5-8 seconds and it was over.

    Not that bad and glad to get rid of it since it was not needed anymore but very thankful I had it-saved my life..

    It is quick.

    My doctor had my sit on the exam table and told me it was gonna feel like I got the wind knocked out of me. He was right. It only lasted for about a 10 seconds then it was all good. I kept a dressing on the area overnight and was then good to go. I now have a scar that I tell everyone that is where I got shot. Its the easiest part of your treatment.  Good luck.

    Congrats!

    Congrats on your PEG tube removal! The hole will heal on it's own. My fiance pulled out his in April (hurt a bit more than he expected it would!) and is closed up rather quickly.

    I was knocked out when they pulled mine

    They were also doing a colonoscopy so I didn't feel a thing. Mine left a what looks to be permanent hole in my abdomen.

    Tube Removal

    I have had two tubes removed after neck disections for tongue cancer.  Due to radiation and chemotherapy the second tube was in much longer.  As stated in other responses the new belly button hole that the tube leaves will heal on its own.  I used a product called Calmoseptine which can be purchased on Amazon to help heal the puncture site the tube removal leaves.  It has been a little over three weeks since my second food tube was removed and at this point no bandage or covering is needed at all.

    Nope.

    Mine did not require any sutures. Just a wad of gauze for the night and I was good to go.  You ll have this done and walk out of the office feeling just fine.

    Didn't have one myself but for most it is very straightforward office procedure.

    Had mine in for 6 months...

    and was glad I did. PA pulled it out in a few seconds. No pain, no sutures. Gauze on it overnight. Felt like a new man! lol

    Combined with colonoscopy

    My husband combined his PEG removal with a colonoscopy.  Healed up with no problems and no stitches.  Easiest part of the post treatment journey.  Good luck!

    Deb,

    I am sorry I missed out on you  having your PEG popped, but it is easy.  Any H&N member who has gone through the removal of a PEG can do it for you. My doctor had me lie on the floor, he put his foot across my diaphragm and gave a big pull.  Pop, swish some belly juice and off I went on my merry way.  I donated my PEG to the homeless out by the river and they have been sharing it amongst themselves for the past 6 years.

    Your learning moment for this evening is me telling you about the procedure I read on replacing a PEG and the article mentioned that the doctor should work quickly as the hole will close up rapidly.

    My big day is Wednesday. I am very excited and happy to hear it is going to be a snap (no crackle) pop!  Getting the pump and IV stand out of the house and back to the pharmacy is the last step in returning my living space back to a home without the constant reminder of darker days.
