Do Oncoligists do MRIs right after chemo?

What would you do?  So yesterday i went to see my General Practitioner and had some x-rays on my back to see why it was still hurting.  I was glad my doctor (she was accually the nurse practitioner) wanted to do something more than just tell me to take pain pills.  I will be honest i was a bit nervous about the amount of x-rays they had to take. I definetly dont like the use of radiation now that i was diagnosed with cancer and have learned so much about it.  So the nurse called me this afternoon and told me they want to do an MRI before they would beable to diagnos me.  I told her that i wanted to talk to my oncoligist first because i wanted to see if he was going to be giving me an MRI soon since chemo is almost done.  My last one is in a week and a half.  Unless my back problem is serious i figure i might as well wait and they can both look at the same MRI.

I guess my question is do oncologists do MRI's right after chemo?  I will probably  wait a week to talk to my oncoligist at my doctors apointment so im hoping others could share there experience.

No MRI's given by onc. doctor

I have not had any MRI's from my gyn/onc doctor.  Have had 4 cat scans but no MRI.  So can't help you with this one.

    My oncologist also does not

My oncologist also does not do MRIs. Only CT and PET scans. It is my understanding that MRIs do not use radiation like the CT scans do. Much less impact on the body. I wonder why our oncologist don't use them instead?  Janae, if your regular doctor wants to do an MRI, I would do it as a precaution!

I did have a CT scan one week after I finished my last chemo treatment.

Good luck and I hope your back gets better!

    Not after chemo

My oncologist did, have me get an MRI, but it was for a rather severe pain in my lower right back.  He wanted to rule out the possibility that the cancer had metastisized to my pelvic bones.  Thank goodness it had not.  My pain turned out to be from my SI joint.  That did not turn up on the MRI but a regular X-Ray.

Ive been having back pain off

Ive been having back pain off and on mostly on since my hysterctomy on may 2nd.  I remember it was hurting day 2 at the hospital.  It did start getting better about week 6 to 8 and so was my surgery form the hysterctomy.  By week eight i felt pretty good.  My concern was that both my surgery and back pain came back.  At first the back pain would get better when i sat doun and rested, but the last month or so It hurts most the time.  Thats why i decided to go.  I want this fixed but at the same time dont want too much radiation.  I guess i can think about it tomarrow because i probably wont do it tomarrow since i see my radiation doctor then. (Im sure i will have enough to think about after seeing him). I do think i am going to do an MRI.  Just got to decide when.   Thanks Lou Ann, Cindi, and Jerri.  I have a better perspective now.

    More experiences would still help.

Oh by the way Cindi, I read

Oh by the way Cindi, I read about how CT scans use more radiation too. That makes me wonder why they use those to.  Sound pretty common.

    I called my chomotherapy

I called my chomotherapy doctors office today to see if they could ask my doctor if hye plan to do a CT scan after chemo and if he would do an MRI with mt GP and the doctor isnt in on fridays.  So looks like i get to wait until tuesday when i accually have my appointment anyways.

From you guys' experiences it sounds like CT scans are what is used after chemo.  Thanks its been very helpful in my decision making.
