Cisplatin plus Abraxane-Clinical Trail

Finally some answers!  At this time there will be no surgery.  Because the cancer is Squamous Cell Carcinoma – P16 it was determined by the team of Drs. yesterday that my husband will be treated with chemo and radiation. 

There has been a trial of a specific chemo drug called Abraxane which is already approved for other cancers, but the Oncologist we are going to has had GREAT success when adding Abraxane into the mix in his P-16 patients while also using Cisplatin. These two drugs will be used the first 9 weeks.

After the 9 weeks is over he will then receive 7 weeks of Cisplatin with Radiation.

 Tomorrow we should hear when he will need to go take some “tests” to make sure he can participate in this trial.  Those tests include a pulmonary function test, EKG, and all kinds of unusual lab work.  He will also have a port placed.

From start to finish it looks like this will take 16 weeks of treatments and we do not know how these will react to his body.  There are lots and lots of side effects, but others have walked this path before him and he can do this!! 

Has anyone on here heard of Abraxane being used with Cisplatin?

    Please keep us up to date on your husband's progress. We had a different protocol, but each one's situation is different. Perhaps you and your husband will be breaking new ground toward treatments. Best of luck to you both.

    It can feel really good to have a plan. I have not heard of that protocol, but like Barbara said, this could be groundbreaking treatment for future P16 H&N cancers. Please let us know how things go and i wish you both the best.

    Barbara, I will keep you posted. I hope that when all is said and done we have great news to share!!  It will be a road we wish we didn't have to travel, but thankful to be getting some help.

    we will keep you posted.  I was hoping someone else from Siteman would be on this site and see my post.  It would be nice to share experiences, but these roads are not all charted! ;)

    MJG1,

    There have been some very good results from application of Abraxane in scc H&N patients for those who meet certain criteria.  Used in conjunction with Cisplatin and radiation the combination should be that knockout punch.  In many cases the chemo soften up the cancer cells for the radiation to destroy them.

    Matt, where have you read about this?  I just started reading about it last evening, but would love to read more.  When we first went to the oncologist there was some discussion of this program and MUCH excitement about it, but at that point we weren't even sure if my husband was P16 and those were the patients who were having good success.  The one thing I remember from that conversation was that this drug allows them to do less damage to the patients as well.  I hope I'm not mixing things up.  I look forward to our next appointment so that I can get more clarity.
