in Uterine/Endometrial Cancer #1

Good morning- My mom was diagnosed with USPC on March 24th.  She is having an abdominal hysterectomy with staging on April 18th.  Unfortunately he CT scan shows multiple lung nodules and she is going for a lung biopsy next week.  I have searched on this site that there have been quite a few of you with lung nodules that turn out to be nothing.  That's our hope.  She also has a cold/cough so maybe that showed up?  We are also aware that the lungs are a common spot for mets with this type of cancer.....so I guess I'm looking for people's responses of yes they have lung nodules that were nothing and from those who had lung mets and are being treated/monitored.  I hate this so much!  My mom is a two time breast cancer survivor '89 and'96....has been thinking of getting a hysterectomy for years and just never pulled the trigger....with the BRCA gene it appears this USPC is all part of it.  Ugh!  I guess I'm just wading through these waters with her and want all the research/help/reassurance I can get.  This board has been a lifesaver for me as you all have shared your stories.  Thank you in advance.

    In 2012 I was diagnosed with stage 1b endometrial cancer.  I had a complete hysterectomy and brachytherapy.  I remained cancer free until 10/15 when I requested a chest xray that showed multiple lung nodules in both lungs.  I then had CT and Pet scans followed by lung biopsy which revealed metastatic endometrial cancer.  I have been receiving carbo-taxol since the lung biopsy.  I am on chemo #7.  The chemo has not gotten rid of the nodules.  I am now on 1000 mg. of Metformin every day.  I will be getting a scan next week and pray the nodules are gone.  Good luck to your mother.  Praying the nodules are nothing!

    I had some lung nodules also

    I had some lung nodules show up on my initial CT Scan.  My doctor said they could be just left from an old infection etc.  That was May 2014 and so far nothing significant from those so she was probably right.  I did have a followup chest xray after and  I asked to have a chest CT also on my next scan date just for peace of mind but I think it's pretty common to see something like that.  

    Also praying that your mother's are nothing!

    thank you so much for your response. Did you tolerate the lung biopsy ok?  My mom lives alone and I am 45 min away. Praying that your scan shows no progression and better yet the nodules have shrunk or are gone.

    thank you for your response. did they not biopsy yours?  She has "multiple lung nodules" which scares me. Did your follow up X-ray still show nodules?

    They didn't biopsy any.  A

    They didn't biopsy any.  A follow-up x-ray showed the same nodules and no change in them or they were gone.

    Lung Nodules

    I tolerated the lung biopsy very well.  The position you have to be in is a little awkward, but there is no pain.  It is over pretty quickly.  They thought my nodules were due to an infectious lung disease until the lung biopsy revealed metastatic endometrial cancer to both lungs.  The doctors were shocked.  It is a miracle that I had asked for a chest xray.  I had no symptoms.  If my scan next week does not show the lung nodules disappearing, I will seek a second opinion at MD Anderson in Houston, Texas.  They are number 1 in the country.  My next choice is Sloan Kettering in New York.  They are ranked number 2.  If a treatment is not going well and they have no other alternative treatment, it is time to move on to another treatment source.  I have two mentors who have sirvived stage 4 cancer.  One lady is a 15 year survivor and the other one is a 13 year survivor.  I keep physically active when I am not tired from a chemo treatment.  I have had 6 chemo treatments so far.  We are vacationing at Hilton Head, South Carolina.  I have been able to walk two hours on the beach everyday and climb 3 flight of stairs all day long (our condo does not have an elevator).  I am not sick or short of breath.  My life has remained fairly normal during all this.  If you have more questions, let me know.  Good luck to your mother!

    i so appreciate your response. hilton head is awesome!!!!  Lots of good tennis and golf. And glad you can walk the beach.  Have the lung nodules stayed the same through treatment but just haven't shrunk or disappeared?  are you having a ct scan?  May I ask if you had serous cancer and what is your age?  Thanks for answering all these questions. That is awesome to have those mentors. I keep telling myself that in 5 years I will look back and regret worrying so much this month because my mom is here and doing well. My mom has the uspc Unfortunately. But I am hopeful and we both have a strong faith. Thank you again.

    Joyce - no symptoms?

    Hi Joyce, I'm still in frontline treatment but am interested in hearing how others have found that the beast has recurred. Your post peaked my interest since you had no symptoms but requested a chest x-ray anyway. What was it that made you request one?

    Chest X-Ray Request

    I read a lot about endometrial cancer and knew it could metastasize to the lungs.  I was told by two different oncologist in two different states that I didn't need a chest xray following my surgeries and brachytherapy.  I didn't agree with them so three years after my diagnosis I talked my family doctor into ordering a chest xray.  She saw no need for it, but said I could have one.  I did have lung nodules with no symptoms.  I think by the time I would have had symptoms it may have spread more extensively.  I am now also on Metformin which I requested since I have read about it being used at MD Anderson and Sloan Kettering.  I have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

    I am happy that your doctored prescribed metformin for you.

    After my Stage 3b cancer metastasized to  34CM of tumors two months after my surgery, besides
    metastases to my liver, spleen and outer rectum, I also had subcentimeter nodules in both lungs.

    After one month on metformin, the lung nodules disappeared on the CT scan.I hope you have the same quick success.

    You do mention possibly going to Sloan Kettering. That's where I received my chemo. I originally entered a
    trial adding metformin to the Taxol/Carbo, but got my integrative oncologist to put me on the real metformin
    because I couldn't risk getting a placebo. You had to be Stage 3 or 4 to get into the trial. The oncologist
    at Sloan called my integrative oncologist unethical.

    I do not have great respect for Sloan. They told me I had 4-6 months to live yet refused to give me the real
    metformin which stopped my cancer in its tracks.  I have had no recurrences so far for over one year.

    That is great that you are doing so well!  My mom is already on metformin for her diabetes so that is good I think.  The largest of the lung nodules in 1 cm.  The rest were small.  She has had a cough/cold so I am so hoping this is what showed up on the CT scan.  Ugh!  

    It's been really hard because her ob/gyn reassured us after D&C that this was definitely benign....one week later it was a figo 2 endometrial cancer.....ugh....then met with the gyn/onc and he read the slides as well as a 2nd opinion pathologist and they changed the diagnosis to papillary serous....ugh....so it was bad news after bad news....then she had her preop ct scan which showed multiple lung nodules.....just when we didn't think the bad news could get worse!  They said even if this is metastatic uterine cancer they still plan to do the radical abdominal hysterectomy.  My mom is so scared....this really stinks!  The lung biopsy is tomorrow and I am hoping we have results before the weekend.  Her surgery is Monday April 18th....This is so hard to believe....she had a clean colonoscopy 2 years ago, and a clean ultrasound in 2012.....man how life can change.....

    update

    So My mom had her lung biopsy on Tuesday.  Apparently the interventional radiologist chose the easiest to access lung nodule.  My mom's preop CT scan showed "multiple lung nodules" in bilateral lungs....the largest being 1cm.  My mom was told yesterday it was benign, but that the gyn/onc may not "believe" the report???  What???  Sure enough, the gyn onc wants her to have another biopsy this time going down her throat and into the lungs.  the first one was a CT guided biopsy!  They said they haven't taken off the table that these are benign but they want to make sure!  Ugh!  Her surgery is Monday and they plan to do the CT scan 1-2 wks after surgery and then the biopsy....Crazy!  What is even crazier is her chest/abd ct scan was unremarkable in the pelvis/abdomen.  All other organs looked great.  I still am holding out hope these nodules are just part of her but her gyn/onc really thinks these are mets.  thank you for all your help!  Joyce, you are my inspiration!  Doing so well and am so happy for you!
