in Colorectal Cancer #1

liver mets confirmed yesterday...on husbands 50th birthday.  Wanted to hit the idiot doctor who thought it was a good day for that news.  Not bad enough that he has to be in the hospital on his birthday.  We did get good news the day before that the brain MRI was ok.  Neuro thought he had a brain met...was a bit of sinusitis apparently.

so doctor says surgery is not an option because he's not stable enough right now, and because he has the bone mets,  I asked her to keep the option Open, we will see.  The oxaliplatin has resolved his bone mets in the past, hopefully it will do so this time.

    Sad news!

    I am sorry for your latest news, Jen.

    But, you know how it goes, keep that chin up, that positive attitude and fight, fight, fight. 

    There are many here fighting and living, and your hubby can join them. 

    And yes, I know the chin will sag at times, and thats not a bad thing. A good cry washes the system, and is as all-important as being positive.

    Thanks all...he came home last night.  One day at a time..

    it is amazing how supportive people are though.  It truly helps.  Most of the nursing staff is awesome, but two nurses really stand out. they went above and beyond to be so kind and sweet to all of us.  One even called me at home after his brain MRI to say she didn't think we had to worry ...and then nagged the doc to come in talk to us with results!

    they ordered him a birthday cake and all nurses and docs came to sing to him and share cake.  

    our 4 year old isn't allowed on the floor, but the doc gave permission, understanding how difficult it is with a long stay for him Not to come see dad.  Difficult in so many ways.  The nurses and aides were so sweet, talking to him about his dinosaurs, bring him treats.  There was even another family on the floor...her mom was dying.  She befriended my boys one afternoon in the family room and would come running out of her moms room to say hi when she saw us And gave my little guy a special magical silver dollar.

    and our friends...dinners, calls, emails...great support.

    I am so sorry to hear this Jen. Please don't get mad at me for saying this but please try to focus on the fact the brain was clear. We have to take whatever we get and embrace it as a small victory.

    Thanks Jeff, I agree.  We were all happy brain scan was clear.  Except the young resident...I think she had been practicing bad news and she seemed a little disappointed.  Haha...these teaching hospitals are interesting.

    good news is blood work looks great.  Platelets are higher today than theyve been in a very long time.  Chemo tomorrow, if the ins auth comes thru.

      The brain scan is clear and the platelets are up!  Let's hope for chemo auth. You have so much on your plate. Being a Mom of young children and a caregiver is no small feat. Your husband has a lot to live for...you are in my heart and prayer.

    Our Son

    ... is fighting stage 4 colon cancer that metastasized to his liver. His diagnosis came this past September and came out of nowhere! He is 45 and has a wife and is the father of 3 sons. We live in Ohio. They live in Vermont. We are with them in Vermont until mid April.  He is terminal and we are devastated.  He is hoping to move home in the summer to be with family.

    As a mother, I can imagine the anguish that you feel at this time. But don't let words like 'terminal' frighten you. There are lots of variables. If you look around on the forum, you will see many Stage IV (terminal) folks, including me, who are doing grand. Some of us are even living without treatment with no evidence of disease (NED, you will see that allot here); others are working their way through treatment, but NONE of us are ready to give in, to the disease or to dispair over what 'might' happen.

    Yes Karen, I hope your son has many more years.  If hes not getting any sort of hope from his doctors, it's worth another opinion.  Some do not do well, but many have fought for years.  It's been 3.5 years since my husband was diagnosed.  It hasnt been easy, but we've done a lot and made many memories since diagnosis.  i hope your son is focusing on living.
