LTD and SSD at the same time?

My husband’s job is processing his LTD claim now to be effective next month.  They recommended he also file for SSD.  They said that he will get the same amount whether on just LTD or on both LTD and SSD at the same time. 

They said 2 advantages to doing both LTD and SSD  at the same time:  1) you continue to build your SS for your retirement.  If you only do LTD, you don’t build anymore SS for your future. 2) Transitioning to return to work or returning and having to go on SSD again is easier if doing both.  They even offer an outside firm (Genex) to assist in filing the SSD.  I guess it is to their advantage because their payout is cheaper if I do both because the monthly amount doesn’t change.  I’m new to all this and just want some feedback.  Do I trust what his LTD is recommending to me?

    I suspect that the LTD cotains an offset for SSD benefits and that to cotinue to get the LTD benefits you are required (not recommended) to file for SSD. Check with your husand's employer's HR department as well as with the LTD carrier.

    LTD and SSD

    LTD is Long Tem Disability usually under an employer's policy with an insurance company.

     

    SSD is Social Security Disability allowing you to collect Social Security after you become permanently disabled.

    Ive just retired disabled and I've been told to contact Social Security, I just wasnt sure what for! Its when you deal with a government bureacracy that one feels truly alien.

    I have used both and it went

    I have used both and it went seemlessly. It was for another couple of things I am going through medically.

    I was told I had to apply for Social security disability. I did a phone interview as the application process. You need to have ready all your doctors' names, and places for treatment. If you have their number/fax number it helps alot as well.

    When I got my SSD, they took that amount OFF of the LTD amount I was already receiving. Luckily, i received approval in 4 months. I suggest you use ALLSUP which is a National agency that does all the work for you. You get a casemanager who checks in from time to time to see if you are still disabled.

    Someone over at smart patients advised that you be very careful re benefits at the current employer.  I think you should get advice from HR.  Medical insurance is an issue.  They also said if you plan to refi your house, do it prior to LTD.

    Footstomper, I see icemantoo cleared it up for you.  It’s weird for me to be talking in acronyms so seamlessly.  I use to ask those kinds of questions.

    It sounds like ALLSUP is like Genex.  They do it all for you too.  It sounds like you have already ben where we are headed.
