Reactions to CT contrast medium Omnipaque?

Hello fellow survivors, I am writing with some good news.  I had a suspicious area on my neck and went through a CT scan with contrast dye last Wednesday and all is normal except for the surgery and radiation damage (fibrosis).  Nearing the critical 2 year mark end of Dec.  

Wondering I anyone has had side effects from the iodine contrast dye following CT scans.  I have been very hoarse since Wednesday and can barely talk in the morning.  Attended my 50 year high school reunion in Arlington Va lst night and decided to celebrate my good news with 2 glasses of wine which is my normal quota.  Experienced a throbbing headache after the event which I am atributing to the dye affecting my blood vessels still, and not to the music from the 60s they played lol.  

Anyone else have hoarsness or headache following CT with dye?  Experiences welcomed.

    hey Pj, good to hear from you and to hear such great news!! congrats.  as for your question, i've never had a problem with the dye and its been used with me many, many times.

    Just tast almonds

    Never had any side effect other that I get real warm and alomst hot on my bottom, and have this Almond tast. I never had chemo or radition and that might change things. I have heard it does change your DNA and you can't donate blood, so it might have that as a side effect.

    The most common side effects of Omnipaque injection include: headaches, mild to moderate pain, backache, neck ache, stiffness, nausea and vomiting. These reactions usually occur one to 10 hours after injection and are usually mild to moderate. They may last for a few hours, and they usually disappear within 24 hours. Side effects of taking Omnipaque by mouth include: nausea, vomiting, moderate diarrhea and gas.

    Occasionally, headaches may be severe or last for days and can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Temporary dizziness has occurred in some people. Rarer side effects include: a feeling of heaviness, low blood pressure, muscle tightness, sensation of heat, sweating, dizziness, loss of appetite, drowsiness, high blood pressure, sensitivity to light, ringing in the ears, nerve pain and trouble urinating. These side effects are usually mild and temporary.

    Children may have fewer side effects, but they could have fever, hives, stomach ache, hallucinations (seeing things that aren't there). These side effects are usually mild.

    When Omnipaque is used in cardiovascular tests, life-threatening and fatal reactions have occurred in rare cases. The injection is often associated with the sensation of warmth and pain, but these symptoms are less frequent and less severe with Omnipaque than with some other contrast agents. Other less common side effects include anxiety, fever, problems speaking and moving, convulsion, tingling, sleepiness, stiff neck, weakness on one side of your body, fainting, shivering, stroke, and involuntary eye movements.

    Never had any side effects from contrast CT or PET radio stuff. Nice seeing you here.

    You date yourself.  I have not had problems with CT with contrast and that’s no Wooly Bully.  It sounds like you had A Hard Day’s Night, Downtown.  Were you Dancing in the Street, Under the Boardwalk or Down In the Boondocks?  Usually, two glasses of wine should have made you feel like a Pretty Woman, but I guess  you Can’t Get No Satisfaction.  Instead, you were part of the In Crowd and you can Do Wah Diddy Diddy whatever you want.  Just be Glad All Over that you don’t feel like a Rag Doll and We’ll Sing In The Sunshine, Like a Rolling Stone, Eight Days a Week.  And next time your doctor suggest CT with contrast ask to take Love Potion Number 9 instead, that’s a real Ticket to Ride.

    PJ, I think Matt is telling you to Shake It Off and you'll be Happy. Sorry. Couldn't resist bringing you back to the 21st century. There are other contrast dyes that can be used or possibly an MRI could be done instead. Be sure to let not only the doctor know, but also the person who schedules the appointment  and the technician.
