Went for my second cisplatin chemo session for SCC of tonsil today (radiation concurrent) but was told that my kidney function had deteriorated since my first session a week ago. They hydrated me and said my MD would call tomorror with recommendation. Has anyone seen cisplatin cause dysfunction after only one session and what did they replace it with? thank.

There are alternatives to Cisplatin, Bebo....

...and yes, I've seen a few on here who couldn't do the Cisplatin because of kidney functions.  I think the Carboplatin is one of the alternatives.  They'll figure it out, and I'm sure someone on here will tell you what they were given.

    Kidney/Cisplatin

My husband had cisplatin, but not weekly.  His was ever 3 weeks during radiation.  He had trouble after the first round of cisplatin and had to have fluids several times.  They waited a week before the second round and then decided to cut the second dose in half and give the last half a week later.  Then they decided not to do a third dose of cisplatin.   They thought, wrongly, that this would take care of it.  When he had to undergo a second round of radiation and chemo for a second primary, he was given carboplatin and it was once weekly during radiation.  Each week his dose was according to his blood levels and weight.  He had no problems with the carboplatin.

    Kidney Function

The platinum-based chemo drugs weren't an option for me because of my kidney function. I had concurrent radiation and cetuximab (Erbitux ). I've been NED for eleven months so far. My doctors also stressed that I could help protect my kidneys by avoiding dehydration. Drink, drink, drink!

    Kidney function

Yep, I have renal insuffiency to this day caused by cisplatin, even though I got hydrated, was given a certain medication before the infusion, I stayed well hydrated all the time but my chemo doc said nothing about kidney damage, did not ever say my kidneys were damaged, about 30% of high dose cisplatin patients develop kidney damage, if reacted to immediately the docs can usually reverse it, my doc was a very bad dude. Did not say anything about it and it took my GP to point it. I taking action against the ****.

    Cisplatin is tough

i only had 3 treatments and I still have side effects- it's the gift that keeps giving- hearing loss- neorothopy- it is strong stuff- no one offered me anything else. They were the worst 3 days of the entire experience
