Keep your hair during chemo: is it worth it?

Saw this story today in the NY Times describing a method to keep your hair during chemo:

Frankly, it sounds like a lot of trouble and discomfort, to say nothing of the expense. Not sure I'd be up for it. I've lost my hair twice in the last two years--didn't care for it, but it seemed like the least of my problems. And where I get chemo, everybody is already shrouded in blankets. Heaven knows there's already enough discomfort associated with chemo. Anybody tried this yet? Or even know where it's available?

    Hi Carole

    I did not know about this when I went through frontline chemo.  Even if I had heard about it, I don't think I would have pursued it.  I totally understand how devastating it is for some women to lose their hair but for me, it wasn't a big deal.  I was more worried about the prospect of having nausea and vomiting (which never happened).

    Yeah

    losing my hair was the least of my worries, too.  I actually enjoyed being bald the first couple of times and didn't cover my head at all.  For some reason it is harder this time.  I have worn hats since I had my hair buzzed in October, partly because of the weather.  Tuesday was the first day I went "commando" as my onc said.  I felt self conscious and vulnerable.  Hopefully I can get over that since I'll likely be bald more times after this.

    It would be worth it for me; the worst part of chemo was losing my hair and my privacy.

    loosing hair

     when my Onc told me I'd loose my hair- before I started Tx - I replied, too, in the big cheme of things that is minor

    NB I wear my hair short & Hate it it is a frizzy mixture of curls & bone straight.  I bough lots of cool hats - enough to color co-ordinate with outfits.

     

    two iofmy treasures are a lime green & orange straw hats. two of my fave colors & I'll wear this summer - the others - I'll hang on to - just in case.

     

    I was never comfortable ut in public without a hat - except in the hospitals for cancer tx & care!
