How to find low-income, income-dependant housing

I can not, for the life of me, find any low income, income based housing!

I need it for May 1st for me and my 'emotional support' dog. Mid-Atlantic, possibly West Coast (but hae to transport what's left of my stuff).

Not the Federal Section 8 type in a project, bad area, or for families.

I can't pay much on what I get for SSD and there is no hope of any perm work or temping to subsidize my income.

Need to be able to get to decent public transportation, first floor, with deck and small yard for my dog and me to garden.

Anyone know how to work this part of the system?

    Talk to the  Breast Cancer

    Talk to the  Breast Cancer Navigator at your Facility.  They are a wealth of info and potential assistance. 

    "Mid Alantic" or "possibly West Coast"?  Those are 1,000's of miles apart!

    Have you looked into getting your dog certified as a Service Dog?  Ceriltificated Service Dogs can not be denied anywhere.

    An idea - if you have to find 'some where' to 'live'  -  perhaps you might accept something that is not your IDEAL but work to get it over time?

    You could call the United Way

    You could call the United Way in the city you want to move to. You could call HUD (Housing and Urban Development). Maybe the city's local Salvation Army would know as well.

    I had just done some research in this area.  Emotional Support dogs  qualify for an exception to "no pet" housing.  I copied the section on housing. 

     

     It is difficult to get your dog registered by the only official service dog association.  This document provides lots of valuable information.

    c) Housing

     

    The Fair Housing Act (FHA) protects a person with a disability from discrimination in obtaining housing. Under this law, a landlord or homeowner’s association must provide reasonable accommodation to people with disabilities so that they have an equal opportunity to enjoy and use a dwelling.8 Emotional support animals that do not qualify as service animals under the ADA may nevertheless qualify as reasonable accommodations under the FHA.9 In cases when a person with a disability uses a service animal or an emotional support animal, a reasonable accommodation may include waiving a no-pet rule or a pet deposit.10 This animal is not considered a pet.

     

    A landlord or homeowner’s association may not ask a housing applicant about the existence, nature, and extent of his or her disability. However, an individual with a disability who requests a reasonable accommodation may be asked to provide documentation so that the landlord or homeowner’s association can properly review the accommodation request.11 They can ask a person to certify, in writing, (1) that the tenant or a member of his or her family is a person with a disability; (2) the need for the animal to assist the person with that specific disability; and (3) that the animal actually assists the person with a disability.  It is important to keep in mind that the ADA may apply in the housing context as well, for example with student housing. Where the ADA applies, requiring documentation or certification would not be permitted with regard to an animal that qualifies as a “service animal.”

    desired city. why not stay close to the area where you are now.

    I agree with another reply.  west coast or Atlanta is a vast difference.   The shorter the distance,  the cheaper the cost and less aggrevain and stress.   If you are looking for doctors now and going to a nih appt soon and your prognosis is 6 mo to few years then why not decide to stay close to where you are now or closest large city.

     

    You need to reduce stress and save energy.   You are sort of familiar w the area now which would help w finding a new place.   Plus changing states while you are sick really complicates medical benefits.

    Just read another one of your posts NFU and you said you were in Florida so I am taking a guess that MAYBE you are talking about West Coast of Florida?   I'm in the NE part of Florida near Jacksonville and they have lots of help up here for women with BC...........  Good Luck and hope you get the help you need ....

    Looking for housing in the Spokane area I have three kinds of cancer lung, kidney and prostate. I’ve gone through chemo, and radiation both now they’re doing immunotherapy with the cancer in my lung They have found new cancer that has started to spread. I have a place to live until the end of December after that I don’t know what I’m going to do if there’s any help out there please let me know.
