Ice on mouth (avoiding sores, etc) while Avastin, before Oxaliplatin?

ask your doctor.  I just finished 10 rounds of folfox5.  The oxaliplatin was given in a two hour dose at the hospital while I had 46 hour of the flourical drip.  I have had and still have a reaction to cold.  I was told if I tried to eat anything cold to have something hot at hand to counter any reactions I might have (including your throat closing).  In fact, the sensation has gotten worse since treatment stopped.  I did baking soda and salt to keep the mouth sores away.  I still drink room temperature or warmer food.  Ask the doctor.  Everyone has a different reaction.

This combination was a life saver for me during my treatments. My Onco told me to rinse four times a day, regardless of wether I had any active sores. 

1/4 teaspoon Baking Soda and 1/8 teaspoon Salt in 8 oz warm water.

I rinse with club soda. Maybe I should try what you guys use. I'm having a horrible time with the cold sensitivity tonight. I can't even hold the handle of the coffee cup I have hot chocolate in. I keep getting shocked by touching things that I wouldn't expect to give me a reaction. I was holding the back door just now while one of our dogs dawdled along coming inside and I had a glove on but suddenly the cold got through it. I keep telling myself this isn;t the worst thing in the world but it's still upsetting.

My first two rounds (months each)  I would suffer from the cold side effects half way through the IV, toilet handles hurt, knobs on the door and the water faucets all hurt my hands, I could not even drink water at room temperature as it felt like cold shards of glass going down my throat, it started out lasting four days and by the time I was done with the Oxy it was up to nine days before I could drink anything cold, it was awful.

 Then one day my onc mentions after I complained when told my next chemo was Oxy again that chemo will not go where it's cold.  I looked it up and they even make special gloves that keep your hands ice cold and booties as well.  

I didn't think I wanted to sit for two hours with ice cold hands and feet so I instead brought ice water with me and started drinking it before and during the IV of Oxiplatinum keeping my hands on the cold bottle or glass.  WHAT a DIFFERENCE, I drink cold water every day (out of the freezer ice cold) no from day of infusion, I can handle door knobs and toilet handles with no problems, it's been wonderful, so she might want to try this.  My hands can't handle the ice cold (my water has ice in it from being frozen cause I love ice cold water) as good as my throat so I have a cozy that goes over the water bottles.

Thanks for that Winter Marie! I'm going to try that next time. I'm still surprised how quickly it hit me this time and how bad it is. I'm terrified that'll it'll last as it's going longer each time. This past one I could only drink cold things for a couple of days before the next treatment. I'm sick to death of hot drinks and with the dehydration hot drinks just don't seem thirst quenching.

Winter Marie, follow up questions as English isn't my main language, or someone who can clarify it for me: the cold water is drank every day inluding the day chemo? your hands and feet are on cold while the Oxali IV?

I drink the cold water just before and during the IV infusion of the Oxiplatinum, this allows me to drink cold water every day if I want.  Yes my hands and feet suffer from the cold effects but I have lessened them by keeping my hands on the cold water during IV infusion, and I wear sandals so that my feet remain cold (it's always cold at the infusion center I go to) and I can walk barefoot on tile the very same day.  It's made a big difference in side effects for the good.

The first two times I did Oxi! it felt like cold glass schards going down my throat even at room temperature, since I started drinking cold water during infusion, NOPE, can drink cold water every day, and I'm talking ice cold frozen out of the freezer cold water.

I'm still having the issues with cold hands and feet.  It's amazing, watching you handle the cold!  Good for you.  I'm just hoping they go away soon.  My doctor said 6 months for most of the recovery up to 3 years.  Geesh!

Hi. I had my fourth FOLFOX treatment on 12/1/14.  I drank ice cold water and put some ice cubes in my mouth while the Oxy was being infused.  I also kept my hands on a glass jar filled with ice.  

I have had practically no cold sensitivity in my hands.  The glass shard feeling is greatly reduced in my throat.  Using ice/cold during the Oxy infusion really seems to help.

Question- do you think I am reducing the effectiveness of the Oxy at all by using the cold/ice during the Oxy infusion?

2014-12-03 My oncologist actually recommended this to me, so you are safe on the effectiveness.

After treatment 3 on Oxiplatten, I could not have an Ice Cube in my mouth!  Ice burned me like fire.  Even a swallow of a drink on ice burned my throat.  I took a small sip of my wife's vanilla shake and cried like a baby moments later.   I got "Ove-Gloves" from Target to get things out of the fridge or the freezer.   Now I can use the gloves to get things out of the oven.

I had my chemo on Monday and forgot to make sure I had cold stuff with me but I did try to keep my hands on the vinyl chairs we sit in and around a glass of cool orange juice as often as I could and my cold sensitivity is much less this time. Yesterday I was at the point that I'm not usually at until about day four after chemo as far as my hands go. I did try to drink something cold last night and got the feeling of drinking shards but after 20 minutes when it was a little warmer I was fine. I'm going to try it again next time but make sure I have something colder.
