tracheotomy

Options

Hi All,

Thank you all for all your support in this hard journey till now.

I have come across another hard point now.My father today had tracheotomy as he had problem in breathing.Last month oncologist has told that the primary tumor has already gone from Pyriformfossa,But there are swollen inside the neck near voice box bcz of the Radiation/Chemo which will be reduced by time. But i think that swollen has increased thats why we had to make opening in neck for his breath.

We will be meeting onocologist end of this week.

Do anyone here has gone through such situations if yes what precautions do we take.

Thanks & Regards

Trilochan

I hope this will help some........

My situation is quite differant but I do have a Trach. Mine is perminant and therefore just a little differant. I can only breath through my neck. My trachea and esophagus have been seperated, his has not. He can still breath through his mouth also. His is to assist breathing untill the swelling or blockage goes away. The doctor or nurse should train him on how to care for and clean his tube they put in. [I dont have any tube] As long as he has the trach in he should stay away from all aerosols, and cleaners as well, do not be around blowing dust, that too will go straight to the lungs. When you breath, your nose filters all that and warms the air as well. When you breath your neck you don't have that anymore. The air is colder or even too warm, your nose helps control the temp. He should drink plenty of water, not coffee or soda. If he is the one who does the yard keep a scarf on to cover the opening so it does not get dust in. They make a foam strip that you tape to your neck to cover it. If the mucus is very thick it can plug the tube and make it hard to breath. Must be removed and cleaned. Make sure you ask the doctor to explain how to care for it.

    I hope this helps some.

I had a trach in for about 5

I had a trach in for about 5 months. They kept it in during radiation treatment to help breath if needed. And if there would be any swelling. And to stay away the best I could from dust and whatever. The doctor did cap it and had me use my nose and mout as much as I could.I did have a suction machine and I had a tube about 6inchs long and had to learn how to slowly insert it into the trach and suck anything out .Was scared to death at first then got easier as time went on.
