Mom just diagnosed with BC - HER2 Positive

Hello all,

I am from the uterine board (Stage 3a, Grade 2 endometrial adenocarcinoma), but my mom was just diagnosed with Breast Cancer.  She is 80 years old and I just took her for her first mammogram because of a lump she told me about which she had but was that she was now visibly able to see.  At the diagnostic mammogram, there was definitely a lump in her right breast and at that time we had a core biopsy done in the office.   It came back Invasion Ductal Carcinoma.   We were not given a size, class or grade of the tumor as of yet.

We haven't seen a surgeon but are scheduled to see him September 15th.   I just received the Pathology Report and two out of 5 stains were positive.   She was HER2 postive.   Also, it indicated that something called a K1-67 was 70%.   (very high)

Further, I saw the mammogram and although it wasn't tested, one small spot under the arm showed up so I believe that at least one lymph node is affected.   The left breast seems fine.

Can anyone tell me if this is aggressive?   I want her to at least have the lump and node removed.   But she is against chemo given her age and the fact that she still drives and gets around fairly well.

Any information or treatment suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

P.S.  Also, does anyone know if this is hereditary?   I am the only girl in my family.   I do have dense breasts (Catagory 2) and have a benign nodule (which was biopsied in 2000)?

    Hi Kathy,

     I am sorry to hear about your Mom. You need to discuss with your mom's doctor what treatment option are suitable for her considering her type of cancer and age and endurance. There are other treatment potions, which can be pffred instead or in addition to Chemo, like radiation, Her2 targeted antibodies and ect.

     

    There is genetic pre-disposition for breast cancers as well as some connections between genecological and breast cancers. Therefore most of breast cancer survivors have been closely followed by gynecologist. As for dense breasts if you suspect something please ask you doctor to order breast MRI for you. It is recommended to have annial momogram as well.

    Lets us know how is you mom doing.

    So far, my mom is doing fine.   I think she knew something awhile ago and because she had mentioned it to me several times, I believe she was ready to have it checked out.   I did just have some genetic testing done on my original tumor.   I was negative for Lynch syndrom, but that was all they tested.

    My paternal aunt also had breast cancer (although she was also in her 70s when first diagnosed).   

    I will let you know more after my mom sees her PCP on Friday.

    I do have yearly mammograms.  I have also been called back for retests several times.  I am due again in January.   I think this time I was asked for a more detailed mammogram.

    My best to you and have a wonderful holiday weekend.

    I agree about your being sure

    I agree about your being sure to be watched by your med people, be tested, AND to not ignore anything you discover yourself.

    I am sure you and your mom will be able to settle on what seems best for her treatments(s).
