Took another step

in Head and Neck Cancer #1

Hey gang Took another step in my recovering.Seen my Dr and he finally removed the trach tube.What a break that was.He said to keep it covered for about a week and to press my finger over as I speak,cough,or sneeze.Seems like my swollowing is a little better also.Maybe someone has gone though this or knows something about it.I asked hm about when I would ready for some teeth that were removed during surgery.He said we'll have to wait around 6 months.He said they split my jaw and there is a gap that the bone will have to fill in.And he said that he still had some work to do.When they operated they removed alittle over half the tounge and replaced it with muscle from my thigh and tied it down to bottom of jaw.Does anyone know what he might mght do before the denist?

    trache removal.....every step forward is a big step! 

    Sorry....I don't have a clue what your Dr. may have in mind, but for sure you'll have to wait for the bone to grow together before teeth.  6 months will fly by.....it just does.

    Should of asked him but was happy with what was going on.Just wondering if he ment they were going to seperate the tounge from bottom of jaw..or even part of it to give it more motion.

    Happy you are rid of that trach.  I had one for 10 days, and it was the worst 10 days of my life.

    Even a total laryngectomy is better than the trach (Although, I do wish I had neither).

    wow, i'm sooooo happy you lost the trach!!  i am also a laryngectomy so I can imagine how you felt with it.  not sure what the difference is between what you had and how i live but i know i'd be damn glad to get rid of it.  praying you get the answers you're looking for and that they're all good.  heal on friend, you are making great headway.

    I hated the trache and only had to have it post surgery until I left the hospital. My best day post was getting that trache out. It healed over in a matter of days. My surgeon said no dental work for 6 months post rads/chemo. Well that was my plan and I even went thru the 30 days of HBOT to prep for extractions and implants but then more pressing issues came up for me. I think the 6 month wait is standard.

    Think your right about that as he said it matter of fact like.Would still like to know what work he said he needs to do before I do see the denist.Wondering if he is going to try to have my tounge start to make more movements or if what it is now is what it is..

    VERY GOOD NEWS

    Congratulations on this step, that is good news indeed!  A trach tube free neck is a happy neck!  It just keeps getting better, one step at a time; Keep It Mov'in Forward!
