in Anal Cancer #1

hi- i am almost 6 years NED. The residual effects from radiation have been many.Two years ago i needed a new hip replacement.My hip was collapsing and it was also fractured.I tolerated the hip replacement well.Fast forward 2 years...i have trouble with my pelvic area..stiffness...achiness..Two weeks ago while playing golf...i reached down for the ball in the cup....it was a deep cup so i went on my knees to retrieve the ball.i put all my weight on my new hip side and got up.I felt fine for about 4 hrs and then started getting terrible pain in my hip..It felt like i broke it..Thankfully hip replacement is ok...but i fractured my pelvis! Ugh !!! another effect from radiation...im 61 and  am worried if i will be able to walk when im 70.My recovery should take about 6-8 weeks.Im sure today radiation is more pin pointed to the area. Please ask the radiologist abut future problems from radiation..Im grateful i am alive and am NED..but the residual effects are many....alyse

    So sorry about your fractured pelvis. Yes, unfortunately there are residual side effects from radiation, but as you stated we're alive. I have lingering side effects too. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

    I nearly cried when I read your post.  To think that you were doing so well after the hip replacement and now you've had this setback makes me sad.  I hope your pain is under control and that your recovery will go well.  The bone issues post-radiation truly suck.  I am now on Fosamax for osteoporosis in my right hip and osteopenia in my left hip and lumbar spine.  Taking that along with all of the supplements for bone health means I take lots of pills these days!  I am still very active and running yet, but know that, like you, one bad move and things could instantly change.  I'm so, so sorry my twin!  I will certainly be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers and hope you'll come back to update us when you can.  Take care, sweet friend!

    Hi martha- thanks for your sweet response. Im definitely feeling better. I went for two week check up and range of motion much improved. Pain level is much less too.its funny, but i recently had bone density Test and it was good. Hmmm.. Go figure. Otherwise everything else is good. My son is getting married in january.

    I am SO happy to hear that you are feeling better and that the recent check-up showed improvement!  Yay for less pain too!  I don't know what to think about the bone density results.  I guess despite good results, once our bones have weakened, we are always going to be at risk for fractures.  I have thought of you so often since your last post, especially since I have been doing a lot of yard work and am still running a lot of miles.  What happened to you is a reminder that it could happen to me too.  Just one misstep or wrong turn and I could have the same thing happen. 

    That's exciting about your son's upcoming wedding.  I'm sure you are looking forward to it.  You will be a beautiful Mother of the Groom!  Take care, sweet friend, and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.  Hugs!

    Hip replacement

    I am 1 month out from radiation and chemo. I also need a hip replacement, but can't stand the thought right now, just still to fatigued and foggy. Glad I happened on your post. I will have additional questions if and when I ever get to the hip! Hope you are feeling better.

    I was so sorry to hear about the fractured pelvis after all you went through with your hip. 

    I have osteoporosis in the low, low, low back too, but early stages, so they don't have me on medication for it yet. 

    But you remind me I need a new bone density scan.

    We really have to pay attention to what is on this board. 

    I feel so bad that you have had to go through all this pain. Sixty one is too young to worry about being crippled!
