edited June 2014 in Head and Neck Cancer #1

Well..., I'm still here..., LOL

Not a lot has changed concerning eating and appitite..., surviving mainly on Ensures and cereal.

I did have all drains removed last week, but both holes the one from the week before and the latest are still spewing out nasty smelly gunk..., but I presume that's better than being inside me.

I do think that occasionally I see a tiny bit of improvement. I'm starting to have a few more better days and nights (not good, but better).

Energy is still very low, but only taking in 1000 calories or so a day is the cause of that I'm sure...

Speaking of which, I'm down 54# now since 22Apr2014...., but I'm alive.

I'm so anxious for this to be in the past and start doing my normal routine of working, yardwork, recreational..., and spending some quality time with my wife and dogs.

I have no words for the support that you all have shown me..., and a few that have gone above and beyond keeping me informed and giving me a little special love between texting me and FaceBook...

You all are truely family...

John

    Thank you

Thank you for posting.  I have been wondering about your recovery.  Slow and steady wins the race.  Take it easy, this too shall pass.  Hopefully you will be able to get more calories, we know how important that is.  Smelly stuff leaking, I have an outer ear infection.  Drainage got me to the doctor, no pain for me (but I have no feeling on that side of my head anyway).

    Holy Moly....

54 lbs!  That is a hell of a lot of weight to lose.....and we thought tonsil cancer was the ultimate weight loss diet.  I'm sorry this recovery is being such a slow one.  I'll bet you itching to get out and do some fishin'......Hoping you see more better days between the crappy ones.....and the distance between the crappy ones getting longer.

Sending you a shot of energy......and lots of positive thoughts.

    Glad to hear from you!

Glad to hear from you! :-)

Also glad to hear about improvements, however minor. Hopefully you'll be past this in time for cooler fall weather and some fishing!

Continued thoughts and prayers for you. Hopefully the huge weight loss has stabilized. Think of you often and waiting to hear that you have turned the big corner with nothing but steady improvement.

    Stay strong!

    better

    John,

As a wise old sage once told me “it just takes time”.

Enjoy your skinny jeans and let’s see (more) better days ahead.

Thank You John for the update

John, you know that a steady pace is best when we do anything. Go to fast and a person gets burnt out quickly, steady pace, get to the finish line or goal. You know the routine, one step forward, two back for awhile. Then it will switch to two forward, one back. Keep going Marine.

My Best to You, Your Family and Everyone Here

    Moving forward

    John,

You went through a rough surgery, similar to what my Dad had quite a few years ago.  It does take time to come back from this, but you will soon.  Watch those calories, try to keep them up as much as possible so that you heal properly.  We consider you and your wife, family also.  And we are very lucky to have you in our corner.  Be well soon my friend !  Hugs sent !  Katie

    My Buddy.....

Been wondering how my Buddy has been doing.  Didn't want to bug you too much with emails, figuring you'd let us know when you were up to conversation.  In spite of the weight loss and the "gunk" still coming out, it sounds like you're doing your best to eat and take care of yourself. You'll be fishin' in no time!!

    John

So glad to see you are sittin' up and takin' nourishment(even though it's only liquid right now). I know just how tough these abdominal surgeries are. My poor baby's abdomen looks like a road map, true battle scars.

Hoping your recovery will be swift and as painless as possible.

    Welcome back!

    Luv,

    Wolfen

    Keep on keepin' on

You just keep those spirits high and recovery will come slowly but surely.  It hurts to even read your posts and what you have been through so far.  And with all that you still keep a hearty attitude with humor running down the middle.

We are all thinking about you and your recovery,

    So good to you post

    Hi John:

I was so happy to see where you had posted.  So sorry the recovery is longer than expected but it is recovery!  Have you tried adding ice cream to your ensures.  When Charlie was in hospital from side effects of first chemo and mouth and throat looked like a carton of cottage cheese, a nurse make him ensure milkshakes.  He like that pretty good.  Of course this is assuming you can eat ice cream if you so desire.  Anyway so good to hear from you, y'all are in my prayers and I do light a candle for y'all in church on Sundays at prayer time!  Hope you go from better to good real soon.  God Bless!

    Hi John

Baby steps one at a time, and little by little you will start to get better. The main part is you survived the surgery now it’s getting your body back into shape and you know that will take its time. Like many others here we all miss you and continue to keep you in our prayers

    So glad for the update!

Slowly but surely....you will get there.  Hardest thing to hear, isn't it?  I know you're ready to get out on that water and catch some fish.  You'll be proud to know that my hubby has be addicted to fishing now.  I've caught a few (small) ones....catfish, bass, bream, crappie and sunfish.  It's SO fun.  I think of you and your fishing pics everytime we take the ol' boat out.  Rest, gain some weight back, and feel better!!
