MuGard Feedback Please

I'm going to start treatment on June 8th. I asked my doctor to order MuGard for me and expect to get it on Friday.

I've read that some have used MuGard to help with mucousitis. I'm interested in learning about your experience using it. Did it help? How and when did you use it? How many times per day?

My understanding is you use it 3-4 times a day and you should start before radiation begins. My plan is to start on Friday when it arrives as my first rad will be on Monday, June 9th. Is starting it early recommended?

Any feedback using MuGard would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much.

    I used it....

...actually, there were several of us using it when I was in treatment.  My recollection was that it helped the the majority of us.  I had just started getting a mouth sore along my upper lip when I started (sores start out as kind of a sandy patch)....and the Mugard cleared it up, and I didn't get another all during rads.  I used it about 4 times a day.....it comes with a little cup to measure it out.  Put it in your mouth, hold and slowly swish for about a minute.  You can't drink or eat for about 30 minutes afterwards (if I remember right).

The deeper I got into radiation, the more Mugard stung.....BUT, once over the 5 or 10 second sting.....you can feel the soothing begin....so it was worth it.  Glad you Onc prescribed it for you......when we were doing it, it was still in a trial stage, and some Onc's wouldn't give it to people.

I didn't know about it. I didn't really have issues with mucus but my lip sores were so miserable I would have welcomed anything that could have helped. Unfortunately, I wasn't on this site and my doctors did not offer it up. I say, give it a try and good luck with it.

    I did get Mugard

AFTER my mouth had sores on it which was too late as it is supposed to be a preventative.  My insurance would not cover it so I ended up paying $250. out of pocket.

Hard to say if it was worth it as It should have been started BEORE treatment.  My R/O was slow to order it and her RN wasn't worth a poot.  She could have gotten me a

"starter kit" from the drug rep.  but evidently that was too much like work.  I say go for it and I hope your ins. co. will help you out.

I used MuGard too, around the same time Phrannie did. I thought it helped a lot--I didn't have many mouth sores at all. My radiation oncologist said the results were so promising that he was going to add it to his regular treatment plans!

I don't think there are any side effects to MuGard, so it's definitely worth using IMHO!
