How to fix the "Application Blocked by Security Settings" chat room problem.

This is my first day on this site and I noticed the java error in the chat room as well. I am running a standard PC running Windows 7, with the newest java update. It seems that version 7 and newer of Java now dis-allows the running of apps without a "trusted certificate" (whatever that is.) Anyway: Here is how I was able to fix the problem.

You should print this out because you won't be able to see this window, and follow all the steps involved.

In Windows 7 or 8, from the desktop, click on "start" then click on the "Configure Java" icon in the list. (It might be hiding in the "Java" folder as well.)

In the java configuration window, click on the "Security" tab at the top, then change the security setting from "High" to "Medium." Finally click on "okay" at the bottom to apply and close. (It will try to scare you with a warning about how apps should have a security certificate, but this setting still allows you to manually choose which apps you want to load before the fact.)

Now start, or restart your browser if already open. (The restart is necessary.) Then login to CSN and go to the chat section. The first time you do so, you will get a warning asking you if you want to do this. Just select something like "Always allow apps from this site" and click "okay," or "allow" or whatever it says.

You should now be in the chat room, and will get there without the warning in the future. These instructions work with all Win 7, 8 or 8.1 desktops and laptops. I haven't tried them with Win XP, Linux or Apple products.

Hope to see you all there soon!

 Soul Mate,

I am not seeing anyone in chat right now either. Talked with SASH in chat for the first time today. So it sounds like you got it working as well. There just isn't anyone to talk to... Yet.

Still blocked due to other security issues. I have tried everything.  Now the exception list is an issue and I had already put the site on that list  Also if it is that simple a fix wouldn't Greta and her IT crew have found it or told us or something by now??????

 Hey Tufi000,

I am surprised that the IT people didn't promulgate this earlier. One of the reasons could be that the method described could cause security issuess in those who go to questionable web sites and just blow through the warnings. The difference that causes the issue is the FACT that Java used to allow sites to run after you click on a warning, and they changed that in Version 7 to all deny access to any website that didn't provide a signed security certificate by default, UNLESS you changed the java settings as I described.

All I know is that I was getting the same symptoms as described by others who have been experiencing this problem. It took me all of 15 minutes to find out why, and that the fix, when applied as I described, WORKS on two machines running 2 diferent versions of windows on my home network.

Also I am a retired IT guy with over 20 years of experience in the field, and have always been able to find my way around windows-based computers. These same IT guys that Greta uses should also realize by now that if their server or chat software doesn't send out a properly signed security certificate, no one with an updated windows-based PC will ever be able to use chat here. Maybe Greta knows why they have refused to deal with this over the past months...

Now, you can be in denial about how I got my PC into chat. But I came here hoping to find someplace to chat about my two-week old diagnosis of Liver cancer that spread to my Adreanal gland and both lungs.

And sitting there with your hands in your pockets and assuming I must be lying since you claim not to have gotten into chat after following these instructions, when I was just trying to help, does not make feel very welcome.

If you were to tell me what version of Windows you run (Win 7, or 8,) and that java has been updated, maybe I could help you too!

PS: Just talked with a user named SASH there. Glad to know it works perfectly for me!

You can leave your security settings set to high but in the Exception Site list, if you add these two lines the chat works:

http://chat.cancer.org:81

http://csn.cancer.org

then close and re-open your browser then you should be able to get into chat.

I agree with SASH. His fix should let you into chat without changing the global security settings. I was concerned about that.

 Either way should work.

Sorry to hear about your situation and wish you the best on your journey and I welcome you to this board and hope you get answers to all your questions. I lowered setting to medium level and it all worked. I will reset to high and try SASH's two lines and post my result when I get around to make the change. Thanks for your input. Bye for now and I'll say Hi! on chat if you're on.

I switched setting to high and entered the two lines to exception list and it all worked. I'm more at ease with the high setting and everything is good to go. I hope more members try and report back with positive results.  I decided to give my 64 bit Windows 7 a try, I downloaded Java version7 update 55 and followed all instructions but did not work. I 'm using internet explorer so went to settings ( gear ) selected compatability view and selected cancer.org add this website and now works. Hope this helps somebody out there. Bye for now and Good Luck.

I run on 64 Bit versions of Widows 7 and have no problems.  Make sure in control panel you are in java (32) to set the security with the 2 urls in the exception list.

http://csn.cancer.org

http://chat.cancer.org:81

You have to have both in your exception list for it to work.  I tested with only having the chat and it didn't work.  Don't forget that the chat runs on port 81 and thus you have to tell java the port # by putting a colon 81 (:81) after http://chat.cancer.og:81

Thanks again for getting chat moving, but you joined to seek info on your situation and I would suggest you also hook up with smartpatients.com  They have conversation tags under liver and lung ,cancer, metastases, etc. I hope this helps on your search and info. Bye for now!

 Thanks Soul-mate, I will give smartpatients.com a try.

I have been visiting a site called cancercompass.com that has a discussion board that moves so fast, it is almost like chat.

I am just starting to see what is out there, so am not sure where I will be spending time getting the info I need. But I have been on the internet since 1993, so I should be able to figure it out.

I have known Sash a long time from here.  I did not in any way mean to suggest you were lying, merely that your solution did not work for me.  None of us dealing with the beast should have to be an IT person to take advantage of the benefits of our wonderful chatroom.  I have been hoping that Greta and whomever she has to deal with would have gone on to a better software by now like other perfectly working sites use.  I even sent her the name of the program Breastcancer.org uses and they  never have a problem. Many from chat have migrated to FB if you feel so inclined, there are quite a number of groups of CSNers there.  I wish you the best on this journey and remember our chatroom mantra...One Day At A time

Thanks Tufi000. I shall assume that we mean each other the very best, and will proceed from there.

I am sorry chat's not working for you. BTW, I run 64-bit versions of Win 7 and Win 8, and only use Google's Chrome for my browser. I don't use Microsoft's Internet Explorer. But I would think it would work for either one.

 Live long,

 Ratpuppy.

So sorry uncle Murphy ( Murphy's Law ) is not letting you solve your problem. Computers can be frustrating at times but makes us happy when all is working the way it's meant for. Please try the compatability view as explained on my May 26 10:13 pm  post. With all the resources available from the members I'm convinced that a solution will come as more members try to set up. Good Luck and i'll say HI! on chat sooner than later.

I have tested with Windows 7 32 bit, Windows 7 64 bit, Windows 8 32 bit, and all work with the 2 lines of exceptions.

If you have problems, you are probably using Internet Explorer 11.  This version doesn't work with chat.  I run in Firefox and Chrome with no problems.  Change your browser and test again.

Hi! SASH  I wanted to say thanks earlier but had to be away for the evening. I got my computer to work with IE 11 but went to chat and new chat platform coming tomorrow, so hope all will be able to log in with ease. May chat sometimes next week and looking forward to connect with members. Take Care. P.S Thread comments on your pic ( priceless)
